UNBELIEVABLE COMEBACKDespite long odds, the Outlaws are moving on

A Mission man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2012 death of 75-year-old Port Alberni resident Mervin Hankins.

The Port Alberni RCMP confirmed that police officers arrested 46-year-old Mission resident Channon Coulter on Friday.

According to RCMP Insp. Mac Richards, Coulter – previously a resident of Port Alberni – was arrested without inci-dent.

On Jan. 13, 2012, Hankins was found dead in his Fourth Avenue home, by a relative.

“His son-in-law discovered him unre-sponsive and lying on his living room floor,” said Richards.

“Port Alberni RCMP responded and in speaking with Mervin’s son-in-law, noted there to be a number of items missing from his residence. Early on,

investigators believed that Mervin was killed during a break-and-enter.”

After a four-year investigation, Coulter has been arrested and appeared in Port Alberni court. Richards said it is likely that the suspect will be transferred elsewhere to be tried.

According to the provincial court da-tabase, Coulter’s criminal history in-cludes previous convictions for break-and-enter, possession of stolen proper-ty and using a forged document.

One of those offences consisted of Coulter stealing from a 73-year-old woman at her Port Alberni home in April 2012. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for that crime.

Coulter’s next appearance on the murder charges is slated for March 9 in Port Alberni.

Film crews are beginning to be a familiar sight in Mission.

Last week a crew spent all day shooting scenes along First Avenue, and this week another crew is busy preparing to shoot scenes for a major Hollywood production.

Film activity has increased significantly in the past year and there are no signs of it slowing down.

In 2015, 87 film days took place in the district, encom-passing 25 different movie proj-ects. That’s a 300 per cent in-crease from 2014.

“We already have seven (film projects) confirmed for this year between January and March and we have another six interested, which is huge,” said Clare Seeley, executive assis-tant for economic development at the District of Mission.

“It’s a big deal. We really are seeing a lot of interest right now.”

Seeley thinks the sudden in-crease in activity is due to two factors. One is the downturn in the Canadian dollar, mak-ing filming in B.C. more and more attractive, and the other is Mission is “starting to build up a reputation” for being effi-cient to work with.

“Location scouts are intercon-nected, talking to each other about Mission.”

And while filming in Mission

doesn’t make a lot of money for the district – licensing and film permit fees are nominal – the local economy is getting a boost each time a new film project comes to town.

“They spend money while in the community.”

While it is difficult to track exact figures, Seeley said a re-cent production that was in Mission for five days spent ap-proximately $22,500 locally.

“And that’s not one of the big-budget movies. That was a local, made-for-TV production.”

With that in mind, Seeley is

currently creating a business directory for hotels, restau-rants, cafes as well as propane providers, photography con-struction material and any-thing that might be required by a film crew.

“That directory will go out to all location scouts,” she said.

Many productions are based out of Vancouver and the crews pack needed materials to the lo-cations. Seeley is looking at what they bring out from town and providing local alternatives.

“We want them to spend money at local businesses.”

Green turned into gold at the Penticton BC Winter Games last weekend.

Mission’s Janie Green cleaned up on the speed skating track at the event, winning five individual gold medals and one as part of a team.

The impressive tally improves on her three gold, one silver and two bronze she earned back at the 2014 BC Winter Games in Mission.

“It was probably one of the best meets of my life,” the Grade 10 Mission Secondary School student said. “Every race went really well for me. Normally I have a harder time in the longer distances but I was just going crazy all weekend. I got new best times in the 500, 1000, and 1500 metres.”

Success in the sport is in her blood, as her

mother Eden Green earned a silver medal in the 500 m and a bronze in the 3000 m relay when short track speed skating was a demonstration sport in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Her father is English speed skater Julian Green.

Her sister Annabelle Green also excelled at speed skating in Penticton, winning one gold, one silver

and three bronze med-als. Janie said it was a great weekend for her younger sister.

“I was so proud and happy for her,” she said. “We haven’t real-ly seen her race at this kind of level before so to see her do so well I was so happy, I was screaming for her at the top of my lungs.”

Janie explained she’s been around the sport for as long as she can

remember.“Four days after I was

born I was brought to the arena because my mom was coaching,” she said. “I’ve been on the ice since I was two.”

Next up for Janie is the BC short track event in Kamloops this weekend. She then attends the Canadian Westerns in Edmonton the following week-end. She has also qual-ified for the Canadian open for short track later this year, and if all goes well she could go for national team tryouts after that.

She said she’d even-tually like to follow her mother and compete in the Olympics.

“I’d love to follow in her footsteps but it’s really hard to make it,” she said. “I will take it as far as I can, and ei-ther short track or long track.”

The Green sisters were one of several Mission athletes who earned medals at the Games. Also taking

home hardware were:❑ Shuntaro Izumi,

silver in judo under 50 kg men❑ Benjamin Seeley,

bronze in archery boys match play recurve❑ Jared Bolland,

bronze in 3000 m mixed U14 speed skat-ing relay

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Mission RCMP are preparing to host their second annual police forum on March 23. The event encourages the public to attend and share their views on policing priorities in the community.

It also features an update on crime trends, a review of the local detach-ment’s annual performance plan and an update on new initiatives to in-crease levels of service.

It is likely that some local business owners, especially in the downtown core, will attend the event and have plenty of questions.

Break-ins have plagued local busi-nesses in the past few months and, despite the best efforts of the RCMP, incidents continue to occur, costing business owners thousands of dollars in damages.

While such break-ins are a com-mon problem in any community, it

does appear that Mission has seen a rise in complaints.

While the RCMP are here to investi-gate the incidents, it is unrealistic to assume that they can prevent them from happening altogether.

There is not enough money in the police budget to have officers stake out buildings, waiting for thieves to strike.

The best way for business owners to protect their investments is to take security matters into their own hands and protect themselves.

Security cameras, alarms and win-dow bars are one avenue to explore. However, simple things like leaving lights on overnight can provide a less expensive security upgrade.

Thieves like to work in the dark. Before you ask the RCMP what they

are going to do, ask yourself the same question.

Protect yourselves QUESTION OF THE WEEKShould the district promote Mission as a viable location for filming movies? To answer, go to the Home page of our website: www.missioncityrecord.com

One of the enduring legacies of Pierre Trudeau’s time as prime minister is the legal supremacy of the individual, as ar-ticulated in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

We are seeing this played out with great-er force than ever today, by an activist high court that swatted aside Stephen Harper’s attempts to restrain it, and now orders a meek, politically correct Justin Trudeau government to do its bidding.

The Federal Court decreed last week that people have the right to grow their own “medical” marijuana. This ruling is unlike-ly to be appealed, given that Trudeau the Younger is committed to legalizing mari-juana for everyone.

There are conditions that show mea-surable relief from marijuana products, such as glaucoma or the nausea and loss of appetite associated with cancer treatments.

But much of the so-called medical mar-

ijuana industry is based on unsubstanti-ated claims about an inconsistent herbal remedy that hasn’t been studied much because it’s been illegal.

The Federal Court case involves four people from B.C., which boasts more than half of the contested medical marijuana growing licences issued across the coun-try.

One of the petitioners suffers from a vaguely defined condition known as “chronic fatigue syndrome,” which led to a disability pension from a federal civil service job at age 45.

The judge cited no research to support the claim that sitting around smoking dope all day relieves this condition.

Indeed it defies common sense that a set of symptoms with no identified cause, which might be confused with what we used to call laziness, would be alleviated by chronic consumption of a drug that promotes eating chips and watching TV.

But we peasants aren’t supposed to question our monarchs, especially those in ermine-trimmed red robes at the Supreme Court of Canada.

That court has decreed that our charter, which in Section 7 protects the “right to life, liberty and security of the person,” includes a right to have a doctor’s help

to commit suicide. Euthanasia has been re-branded as “assisted dying” by all the most “progressive” countries, and Canada has been given a firm deadline to join the club.

(Meanwhile, the term “right to life” is all but banned from university campuses, to

minimize the risk of a coarse literal inter-pretation that it means, you know, a right to life.)

A Liberal-dominated committee of MPs and senators has recommended full-throt-tle implementation, not restricted to ter-minal illness and including mental con-ditions such as depression and dementia. The majority suggested even “mature mi-nors” should have this new right.

The politicians support allowing doctors to opt out of cases they won’t condone, as

long as they provide a referral to another doctor.

In Belgium, one of the pioneers of this brave new world, most of the growing number of euthanasia patients have had cancer. But as The New Yorker magazine reported in a ground-breaking article last summer, others have been euthanized because of autism, anorexia, partial pa-ralysis, blindness with deafness, man-ic-depression and, yes, chronic fatigue syndrome.

B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake expressed the hope that Canada ends up with a con-sistent policy on doctor-assisted suicide, rather than a provincial patchwork.

The closest Lake came to politically in-correct criticism was to caution that “deep discussion” is needed around the court’s notion of a “competent minor,” someone not yet entrusted with the vote or access to a liquor store.

Three dissenting Conservative MPs went so far as to say the recommendations don’t adequately protect seniors who might be coerced into checking out and passing on their estates. How old-fashioned.

YOUR VIEWS

It’s my opinion, and maybe I was misled, when I took my driving lessons that when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk all lanes of traffic both ways come to a stop to let the pedestrian cross.

Because you didn’t observe this procedure, you almost hit me on Feb. 8/16 on First Avenue.

My legs are my asset in my job; broken limbs does not work in my job. Not to mention the cor-onary I had at the moment.

Art WalkerMission

Near miss while crossing the street

A short time ago I submitted several recommendations re-garding animals to most may-ors and councillors in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), spe-cifically with the desire coun-cils would adopt the prescribed bylaws pertaining to compan-ion animals, notably cats and dogs, including basic care and handling, to spay or neuter by five months, tattoo and create a breeder permit scheme, with a regime of severe fines for offences.

Part of the proposal is to abandon selling companion animals at retail pet stores and online sites. Transfer or sales of pets would include the breeder permit registration number on all documents.

I believe this is the solution to provide caring homes for

all dogs and cats, create stan-dards of proper care and in the process eliminate puppy and kitten mills.

Sadly, recipients contacted ig-nored proposals and the loss continued to be the dogs and cats.

Let me hasten to add, all the same documents and propos-als were submitted to the pro-vincial government and federal government, the latter included adopting changes to the out-dated Criminal Code, hence making companion animals sentient beings, no longer prop-erty, and to accompany severe penalties and dramatic fines for infractions.

So what does it take to get government’s attention? Going into an election year seems to help. Flagrant abuses found at several recent puppy mills,

raids by the BCSPCA help. Public support has always been evident but government mori-bund and indifferent behaviour has always been a stumbling block.

As well, pure-breed breed-ers have long been a negative self-interest force that previ-ously held some sway but I be-lieve the recent atrocities and media focus at last may have been just too severe for any politician to simply ignore.

I applaud government rec-ognition of the problem and causes but sincerely hope legislation is adopted swiftly, within the next three months, and no procrastination to be evidenced in this important matter.

YOUR VIEWS

As much as I completely agree with the sad state our public schools are in, I cannot entirely agree with the article (Class sizes among the highest in BC, Feb. 26) as it was published and presented.

Mr. Mills, the reporter, chose to outline and describe where Mission Public School District (MPSD) ranks in terms of class-size averages. That’s all fine and dandy and I’m sure the numbers are legit, but what the article fails to mention is the reason MPSD is in such a state. And this is because of the ac-tions of the Liberal government over the last 15 years.

The Liberal government took office in 2001. Shortly thereaf-ter, Premier Gordon Campbell, who had, prior to being elected, stated that he would not rip up previously negotiated con-tracts, went in to the teachers collective agreement (contract)

and literally, unilaterally, re-moved any language regulating class size and composition. He removed that language entirely, therefore removing any limits and rules that school districts had to adhere to when setting class-size limits and composi-tions (numbers of special needs students per class).

This action alone basically opened the floodgates of class-rooms.

Once Campbell removed the language, the Liberals have continued to underfund public education to this day. Today, BC students, including Mission students, are funded $1,000 less than the national average. In 2014, BC had the second low-est per-student funding in the country. We were better than Prince Edward Island.

The reason this is import-ant is because over the past decade, chronic underfund-

ing and downloading of costs on to school districts by this government has forced school boards to cut costs as much as possible. They don’t have a choice. They can only work with the money they are given by the provincial government. And the easiest way to cut costs? Cram as many kids into classrooms as possible, cutting down on wages and salaries of teachers and support staff, as well as reducing maintenance and upkeep of buildings (school closures come to mind).

Christy Clark and her govern-ment continue to underfund education and not make public education a priority. All these actions and decisions by the Liberal government were ig-nored in the article but must be stated and shared with readers.

Mission and Abbotsford have the highest share of chil-dren in Canada.

The 2015 data from Statistics Canada show that the Abbotsford-Mission census metro-politan area (CMA) has 18 per cent of its pop-ulation ages newborn to 14.

The higher share of children in Abbotsford and Mission has been

attributed to the mu-nicipalities’ historically younger, family-orient-ed community.

Jonathan Chagnon of Statistics Canada said that in 2012 the area also ranked fourth in the nation for those aged zero to four.

The population growth rate in the CMA is 1.4 per cent, higher than the Canadian rate which is 0.9 per cent.

Mission RCMP are reaching out to the community to help reduce property crime by utilizing their cell phones in a simple way.

Staff Sgt. Rob Dixon said that all too often, police investigate incidents of theft when the victim has a limited description and no record of a serial num-ber for the stolen items.

This lack of information can hamper police as they are unable to properly identify stolen prop-erty they encounter in the course of their duties, leading to lost opportunities for prosecution and not being able to seize and return property to the rightful owners.

“We are asking members of the public to take out their cellphones and take some pictures of all the property that is important to them,” said Dixon.

“As an example, if you own a bicycle, take a mo-ment to take a picture of it, then flip it over and take another picture of the serial number. This way, if you are the unfortunate victim of a theft, you will be able to provide us with the best possi-ble information to conduct our investigation, also improving your odds of getting your property back,” he added.

Dixon said the opportunities to use your cell-phone to record items and their serial numbers or distinctive characteristics are endless.

Other examples include taking detailed pictures of jewelry, golf clubs, gaming systems, television sets and tools. In addition, you can videotape all the spaces and contents of your home for insur-ance purposes, record important pieces of personal identification, and record luggage contents when travelling in the event of loss or damage.

Police are just starting to get this message out and will be working with the crime prevention of-fice to get the public on board.

A pair of Mission la-crosse players are pro-vincial champions.

Grade 12 Mission Secondary School stu-dents Brendan Symons and Nathan McKeigan were key parts in the win last month to secure the provincial title for the Tier 1 Langley field lacrosse U18 team.

Symons and McKeigan have played lacrosse in Mission since they were mini tykes, but Mission didn’t have a U18 Tier 1 team this year so they were scooped up by Langley.

Lacrosseduo shine

The Mission Minor Hockey Midget A1 team defeated Port Moody 4-3 on Tuesday night to qualify for the provin-cial championships in Prince George, March 14-17.

After defeating North Shore Winter Club 4-1 on Sunday, Mission was in position to clinch a provincial berth Tuesday night, and they did just that. The team is the only MMHA team to qualify for provin-cials.

“I’m so proud of the guys. I really can’t put

it into words,” said head coach Wes McLeod.

“The guys just stepped up. Most of our team was sick tonight. We had three players missing, and several others played sick.”

Down 3-1 in the third period, Mission defenceman Dawson Nelson scored a pair of goals to tie the game at three. Kyle Mooney, who scored the first goal of the game, added his second of the night for the game-winner.

Goalie Chad Cromar, also playing sick, was outstanding once again.

“Chad has played six games in a row for us,” said McLeod. “He’s been an absolute wall. He had back-to-back shut-outs last round against Coquitlam. Our team learned how to win in that series, and we carried it into the final four.”

The challenge now is to take their game to the highest level. The provincials include the top eight teams from around B.C.

Sibling arguments aren’t quite as nasty as

one might think inside Mission’s Seal family household.

According to both

Alexia Seal and her sis-ter Victoria Seal, they don’t bring any of their aggression home; in-

stead, they leave it all on the wrestling mat.

The siblings proved that, with a pair of

division-winning per-formances at the BC high school wrestling championships in Abbotsford last week-end.

Grade 9 Heritage Park Secondary School student Victoria took home top spot in the 51 kilogram division, while Grade 11 Mission Secondary School stu-dent Alexia dominated the 47 kg division, and also earned most out-standing female wres-tler at the event.

The pair won every match they competed in, and defeated their opposition 10-0 every single match.

“It went really well,” said Alexia. “And I’m really happy to win the most outstand-ing wrestler award. My teammate won it last year and that was something I was really hoping to do this year.”

Alexia began wres-tling three years ago, following in the foot-steps of her older brother. She quickly

developed a passion for the sport.

“I like everything about wrestling,” she said. “It keeps me fit, keeps me focused on school and gives me goals to strive for.”

She trains five days a week, and said she’s impressed at how quickly her younger sister is picking up the sport.

“My sister did real-ly well at provincials,” she said. “We didn’t know what to expect because it was only her second provincials but I’m just really proud of how she did.”

Victoria said her win was due to a lot of hard work, and the same disciplined training regimen that her sister does. She’s been wres-tling a year and a half, and said Alexia has mo-tivated her to become a better wrestler.

“She’s my role model,” she said. “I’m proud of how she wrestled last weekend and I really look up to her.”

Next on the plate for both wrestlers is the nationals in Calgary in April. It’ll be the first trip to the event for Victoria, while Alexia is hoping to repeat and once again make the national team.

“I’m hoping the same thing that happened last year happens this year,” she said.

Later this month, Alexia is up for the SportBC female high school athlete of the year for her achieve-ments last year. She is one of three finalists for the award, which will be handed out on March 10.

“I’m really excited for that,” she said. “I’ve never been nominated for that before so to be shortlisted for some-thing like that is amaz-ing.”

Also competing at the event from Mission was MSS student Haley Florell, who finished in fourth place in the girls 90 kg division.

The Mission City Outlaws com-pleted the improbable on Saturday, and now they’re set to square off with their rivals to the south.

Mission squares off against the Abbotsford Pilots starting tonight, after finishing off an incredible comeback in round one against the Ridge Meadows Flames.

The Outlaws fell behind three games to zero against the Flames in the opening round of the play-offs, but stormed back to win in spectacular fashion in seven games.

Mission won overtime games against the Flames in games four and five, blanked Ridge Meadows

3-0 in game six on Friday and then wrapped the series up on home ice on Saturday with a 4-1 win. Kolby Steen was huge in game seven, scoring the game’s tying goal, and adding an empty net marker for insurance. Tristen Dundas and Brody Dyck also scored in game seven to advance Mission to round two.

The Outlaws face off against a familiar opponent, and the same team that they beat to clinch their first-ever Harold Brittain confer-ence, the Abbotsford Pilots.

Abbotsford and Mission met six times in the regular season, with each team winning three.

The Pilots will be well rested, having disposed of the Aldergrove

Kodiaks in six games following a 5-1 win on Feb. 24.

The series kicks off in Abbotsford on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with game two occurring at the Mission Leisure Centre on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. Game three will also be in Mission on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Game four returns to Abbotsford, while games five and seven, if nec-essary, will be in Mission.

The winner receives the Harold Brittain conference title, and will then play the winner of the Tom Shaw conference final, which pits the Delta Ice Hawks against the Grandview Steelers.

Read the Mission City Record online for more coverage of the series.

All-New electric Chevrolet Volt is auto show prizeThe future is electric when it comes to how our personal vehicles are powered. The transition from gasoline en-gines will not be complete for per-haps decades but early examples of electrical propulsion, be they pure electric, gasoline hybrids or plug-in hybrids, clearly indicate this positive direction is no longer a pipe dream of futurists.Last year, we gave away an all-elec-tric Nissan LEAF in our Vancouver International Auto Show contest and it attracted a record-breaking 34,558 entries. This year, we are pleased to announce that we are giving you the chance to win the keys to an electric Chevrolet Volt provided by your BC Chevrolet Deal-ers. (see it at this year’s show at Vancouver Convention Centre West, Wednesday, March 23 to Sunday, March 27).The all-new 2016 Volt with extend-ed range, offers around 76 kilometres of pure electric driving on a full charge. Once you exceed that range, the onboard gas-powered generator fires up quietly and ensures the battery tops up to keep the dual electric motors running. It offers the best of both worlds and removes the ‘range anxiety’ associated with an electric vehicle that

must be hooked up for a recharge once it reaches its limit. Once the generator kicks in (range extender in manufacturer-speak), on a full tank of regular gas, you could drive up to another 600 kilometres. That translates roughly to the equiv-alent fuel economy of about 5.7 L/100km.Yours truly spent a week driving the new Volt, which is a darn sight prettier and sleeker than the first gener-ation. And now the all-new interior provides seating for five, which makes it far more appealing for families looking for an eco-friendly sedan.Big improvements to the instru-ment panel and controls. The Volt retains its dual digital colour dis-plays with an eight-inch-diagonal reconfigurable screen. An addition-al eight-inch-diagonal touch screen in the centre of the instrument

panel controls the Chevrolet MyLink system. You are constantly aware of how much juice you are using. Green cars always challenge drivers to compete with themselves to get the most out of the vehicle in fuel efficiency. For instance, when I picked up the car the screen showed there was around 66-kilometres of electric range. A 10-min-

ute freeway trip and almost 100 klicks and I was at 61-km range. Do the math! It’s magic!By the way, reaching 100 km/h reportedly takes just 8.4 seconds. I say reportedly because I didn’t have a stop watch. What I love about electric power is the Formula 1 start you can make at the lights if you are feeling naughty. Zero to 50 in just 2.6 secs. Yep, a family sedan that leaves the rest in its dust! Not that I’m encouraging such

behavior, just saying.Of course, city stop-go traffic soon brings one down to earth and drains the battery but if you anticipate lights, smooth out the acceleration and make full use of the power regeneration when you brake or coast down hills, you can get back on the

eco-track. Incidentally, you can set the amount of regeneration that suits your driving style.I charged overnight on a regular domestic garage power point. By morning it was at maximum range. You can cut that time in half and better with a charger designed to make maximum use of the power on tap.The Volt offers new standard and available safety features including a standard rear-vision camera, 10 standard air bags, including driver and front-passenger knee air bags. Also available as options are such active safety features as ‘lane keep’ assist with lane departure warning, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert with following distance indicator, front automatic braking, and

advanced park assist with front and rear park assist (semi-automatic parallel parking).Pricing before government incentive rebates starts at $38,390. In B.C., with the full rebate, that drops to $33,390.Take one for a very quiet spin and then enter to win!

An auto show preview will appear in Driveway in two weeks.‘‘The all-new 2016

HOLOTA, Jutta1926-2016

Deeply cherished mother, avid hiker and artist, Jutta Monica (Babion) Holota will be profoundly missed by her family. She passed peacefully on Feb. 26, 2016, at Ab-botsford Regional Hospital, at the age of 90.We say goodbye to a guiding light, a soul brimming with kindness, curiosity and cre-ativity, and a human reflection of nature’s boundless beauty.Jutta was one of the three children of Anton and Auguste (Kirchner) Babion. She was born Feb. 19, 1926 in Vienna, Austria where she lived until 1934, and then moved with her family to Germany. She was trained as a textile designer, and eventually came to live in Schliersee, Bavaria, where she met her husband-to-be, John Ivan Holota, who left his family farm in the Ukraine during the turmoil of World War II. Jutta and John emigrated to eastern Canada in 1951. Having learned to weld in Germany, John was a dedicated provider while Jutta looked after their home. Their son Andrew was born in 1957 in Chicoutimi, Quebec.Dearly missing the lofty mountains of Ba-varia, Jutta motivated John to move to Abbotsford in 1963. They lived on a hobby farm while John continued in his trade.

Mount Baker was a prominent feature of the view from their home, and Jutta pursued her deep passion and fascination for the moun-tains, logging about 1,000 hikes throughout the Cascades and Chilliwack Valley. She formed the Fraser Valley Hikers some 40 years ago to share her experiences. She was a never-ending fountain of knowledge for every trail, every peak, and every alpine flower and other flora and fauna.A talented artist, Jutta reflected her love for mountains and other natural scenes in her oil paintings and sketches. She was the founder of the Abbotsford Palette Club in 1978. She also was a gifted knitter, and creator of traditional Bavarian handicrafts and artwork.Jutta was an immensely devoted mother and wife, helping her husband with farm work, and taking her son on countless hikes and outdoor trips. She was loving, warm and wise, kind and generous, and a great cook. Any child would be truly blessed to have such a supportive, inspiring mom.Andrew became a photographer and jour-nalist, starting his career at the Abbotsford News, and after many postings and adven-tures in the region and around the world, returned to The News in 2009 as editor, in part, to be closer to his mom.She was also a committed animal lover, enjoying and caring for numerous cats and dogs, many of them strays, during the farm years, and at their later retirement home in Abbotsford, where she continued to live af-ter John passed away in October 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations will be much appreciated for the BCSPCA.Jutta is survived by her dear sister Nika, son Andrew, daughter-in-law Heidi and grand-daughter Anna. She is predeceased by her brother Toni.Jutta will be remembered with the deep-est love and greatest respect. As it was throughout her life, her uplifting spirit now has eternal freedom and joy among the soaring peaks. Please think of her when you gaze at the region’s highest mountains.
