REFLECTION OF THE WEEK June 9, 2019 • Pentecost Sunday

Gospel SummaryBecause they still did not understand all that Jesus had told them, the disciples were huddled together, frightened, in a room. The doors locked, notwithstanding, Jesus entered the room and greeted the disciples with a sign of peace. Some have interpreted this sign of peace as more than the all be well with you, variety but more of the shalom type which entails a perfect harmony with God. In any case, the disciples received the Holy Spirit and came to understand the peace Jesus intended. The authority and power to forgive sins was also given to the Church at that time.Bringing the Gospel Into Your FamilySince this Gospel passage reminds us that the Church received the power to forgive our sins, this might be a good time to talk about reconciliation as a family and how receiving forgivenessÐfrom one another or through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, helps us heal and grow. If you family did not receive the sacrament during Lent, this might be a good time to go as a family.Discussion Starters1. I’m a lot like disciples because ...2. I was afraid, but felt the peace of Jesus when ...3. The best part about forgiving (or being forgiven) is ...Questions of the Week

CCare for are for Creation / Cuidando de la Creación A series on recycling taken from Re/uses by Carolyn Jabs

Using crayon stubs – shave broken crayons between two layers of wax paper. Use an iron to melt the colors. Frame and you have a beautiful stained glass like creation. You can also melt the crayons in a metal leftover container at 100

degrees and then pour the melted crayon over recycled cans, bottles, or fabrics to decorate them.

Old Mission School was dismissed for summer vacation on Friday, June 7. Students and staff alike look forward to the summer months as a time of rest, recreation, and greater freedom from

schedules and also as a time to pursue learning according to personal needs and interests. This is a happy time for students, parents, and staff. As we look forward to the end of the current academic school year and make plans for the next, please keep us in your prayers as we continue in our attempts to point the way to hope and the good news as we provide an education for our young people that is rooted in the Gospel and a desire to teach as Jesus did. Old Mission Catholic School is currently accepting applications for preschool through eighth grade. Our entire school community is dedicated to the development of socially responsible citizens who are spiritually empowered, academically enriched, and morally accountable for their actions. For more information or to obtain an application, please visit our website at www.oldmissionschool.com or call 805-543-6019. Come see us. We have openings, and we have fi nancial assistance.

A Catholic education is an advantage for life.

As we approach Graduation season I thought that was a wonderful quote to share with you all.Congratulations to the Graduating class of 2019. As you go forth on your journey may you cast many

stones and enjoy much success in all you do. We are looking forward to the busiest season of our year. There will be people visiting from all over the world. We will share some of our stories and enjoy theirs as well. It’s a fun time for us. If you are leaving for vacation during the summer we wish you God speed. We hope you will return with wonderful memories of happy times. You are always welcome to come in and browse. If you are looking for a special gift or just looking our staff is eager to assist you.

We are here 7 days a week - from 9-5PM.

Social Justice held the last meeting of our very active year this past Tuesday. The year was capped off by our successful Ice Cream Social and tour of the 40 Prado Homeless Center. MANY thanks to SLO Doc Burnsteins for supplying their delicious ice cream and to our members for adding all the toppings. Last month, we also helped spread the word, during National Foster Care Month about the urgent need for foster families in our County. Felipe Gonzalez, of the Department of Social Services tells us that at any given time there are over 350 children, youth, and teenagers in the county’s care and only 110 active homes available. He can be reached at 781-1815 to learn more about how we can help. Family Care Network, the agency we visited last Fall, works with the County to help address this serious problem. We also visited the Food Bank Coalition and People’s Self-Help Housing to round out our Building Bridges year. Other activities: Contributed a gift basket for the Padres Dinner; collected food items at all the Masses and designated the Social Justice Second Collection to the Food Bank Coalition; rang bells for Salvation Army; held our Lenten Study Group; and assisted ALPHA with the Mothers’ Day baby bottles and cards. We will resume our meetings in September. A happy and safe summer to all!

“See your people gathered in prayer, open to receive the Spirit’s fl ame. May it come to rest in our hearts and disperse the divisions of word and tongue”. -Opening Prayer for the Pentecost Vigil Mass
