How easy it is to forget that we are to be people of joy. Throughout these days of Advent we can find ourselves far too busy to take time to focus on why we are so busy. Traditionally, from Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Day we are consumed with shopping, cooking, eating, gathering, partying, and traveling. These are good things in as much as they celebrate the Lord’s coming and strengthen our relationships with one another. But they must be lived with glad rejoicing for they are a celebration of the promised salvation inviting us to eternal life. As we now engage these final days of Advent, intended to prepare us more directly for the Lord’s birth, may we calm ourselves enough to reflect on the true meaning of what we celebrate in the Lord’s coming, so that the joy of God’s love may indeed fill our hearts. Sisters and brothers, as followers of Jesus Christ let us “Rejoice in the Lord always!”

How can you reduce your electricity use this month, as we light our Christmas trees and houses, and warm our homes – have you converted to LED lights yet? Can you leave your lights on one hour less at least once a week?

Gospel SummaryIn today’s Gospel reading, those in the crowd, tax collectors, and soldiers all ask John the Baptist what they should do. In each response, and according to each group’s circumstance, John emphasizes keeping or taking only what is needed or prescribed. John also makes it clear to all that the Christ for whom they have been waiting is yet to come.Refl ection for ParentsThis Gospel highlights several Christian values that are learned in the home—generosity, fairness, truthfulness, and contentment with what you have. Take some time today to think about each of these values. How are your children learning these values through your example? How can you make these values more a part of your family life as Christmas nears?Bringing the Good News Into Your FamilyAt this halfway point in Advent, choose as a family one way you can share what you have with others. Perhaps you can donate gently used coats and sweaters or new hats and mittens to a local shelter. If your parish food pantry is in need of donations, go grocery shopping and help meet the need for food. If you are a musically gifted family, plan to carol in your neighborhood or at a local care facility.Discussion Starters1. Something that I have more than enough of is . . . 2. Happy Third Sunday of Advent. This is ‘pink’ Sunday – Gaudete Sunday – Rejoice! A fellow catechist called it “We’re almost there Sunday”. How can you bring a little more joy into your family life this weekend – a special outing, an ice cream party, handing out bag lunches to our homeless brothers and sisters, calling someone you haven’t spoken to in awhile, … what can you think of?!

Thanks to the Gospel message which we proclaim and the efforts we make to instill a sense of responsibility for shaping a more just and peaceful world, Catholic education is seen as a

sign of hope for the future of our world’s children. The teachers and staff at Old Mission School continue to strive toward the manifestation of this vision. As always, we depend on your prayers as we seek to provide a program of Catholic education by teaching Catholic values and the basic skills necessary for living fully in our world.Old Mission Catholic School is currently accepting applications for preschool through eighth grade. Our entire school community is dedicated to the development of socially responsible citizens for the twenty-first century who are spiritually empowered, academically enriched, and morally accountable for their actions. For more information or to obtain an application, please visit our website at www.oldmissionschool.com or call 543-6019. Come see us. We have openings, and we have financial assistance. A Catholic education is an advantage for life.

Gift Shop News Words of Inspiration: “In your heart Joy;

at your table Abundance; in your home – Peace”.We would like to take this time to wish you a joyous, peaceful and wondrous Christmas season. May we enter the New Year with love, grace, and gratitude for our many blessings. We hope you will come in and browse. There are wonderful children’s books with inspiring and fanciful stories – taking us back to younger days. Remember, a book is a gift you open again and again. As always we have added new and exciting Folk Art from around the world. There are many unique Nativity scenes from which to choose. Thank you to the staff of the Old Mission Gift Shop. While most are new employees they have made this a fun time by sharing their unique spirit while learning and welcoming visitors to our world. I do appreciate their contribution to our happy place.

We welcome to visit us 7 days a week from 9-4 pm. We will be closed on Christmas Day but will be with you

again on the day after Christmas. The AVID program, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a national program which serves SLO HS students who are on a path to attend college, often the first in their family to do so. AVID at SLO HS needs tutors to work alongside the teachers with a small group of students. The time commitment is 12:40-2 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from end of November until end of February. Some fluency in high school math is ideal. Training will be provided by the AVID teachers, who are regular credentialed teachers at SLO HS.
