DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

Identity and Cross

By the time Peter made his profession of faith, acknowledging Jesus as Messiah, the Son of God, the apostles had heard and seen a great deal of the person of Jesus. As anyone would, the apostles must have taken some pride in being very close associates of the Messiah. Now they begin to hear from the Messiah that, the cross is ultimately tied up with his identity as the Son of God. Not only that, for all those who wish to remain in his company and be his disciples, they too have to be willing to carry their own crosses daily. Often referred to as the cost of discipleship, this is a theme not heard about so much in the face of “prosperity gospel” message in its various forms that we hear so much about. Christians cannot lose sight of the cross and its essential place both in salvation for the human race and its implication in our individual lives. The Catechism reminds us: “The Paschal mystery of Christ’s cross and Resurrection stands at the center of the Good News that the apostles, and the Church following them, are to proclaim to the world. God’s saving plan was accomplished ‘once for all’ by the redemptive death of his Son Jesus Christ. (CCC, 571) “The Church remains faithful to the interpretation of ‘all the Scriptures’ that Jesus gave both before and after his Passover: ‘Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?’ Jesus’ sufferings took their historical, concrete form from the fact that he was ‘rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes’, who handed ‘him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified’. (CCC, 572)

“’When the days drew near for him to be taken up [Jesus] set his face to go to Jerusalem.”’ By this decision he indicated that he was going up to Jerusalem prepared to die there. Three times he had announced his Passion and Resurrection; now, heading toward Jerusalem, Jesus says: ‘It cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’” (CCC, 557) It is obvious from other gospel passages, like Peter’s reaction to Jesus’ announcement that, the apostles tended to seize only on the cross and very little focus on the resurrection also mentioned by Jesus. Taken together, the lesson is that, the cross does not have the final say. The cross is also the sign of hope. To carry our crosses every day is to journey on the road to resurrection. Let us then always pray for the strength to faithfully bear our crosses.

Have a blessed week everyone!

****************************** “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” MARK 8:34

When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then

we must be willing to give up some things so that we can

share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship

lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but

the lives of others as well.

busy schedules to offer our 60th Year Feast Day Mass, “Exaltation

of the Cross”, and have breakfast afterwards with us last Sunday.

On a similar note, many thanks to all of the members of the 4R

deeeelicious breakfast!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!

The 4R Committee expresses much gratitude for the very

play, especially your prayers, helped us bring the project to the

forefront because CRUCIFIXION IS YOU! We hope all attendees

had lots of fun at our initial 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary

Fundraiser! May God continue to bless you!!!!

More 60th Anniversary Events are coming soon!

******************************** Team Crucifixion,

“Making Strides Against Breast

Cancer” Campaign

Today begins our annual community support for the American

Cancer Society. “Team Crucifixion” has already begun supporting

the cause for the 2018 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Campaign. $405 was collected in August, and we will continue to

raise funds to help stamp out this dreaded disease known as

cancer. The proceeds are used for research which has helped

develop medicines unique to each patient, opened a facility in

which family members are able to stay while loved ones are being

treated, provided wigs and transportation for clients to and from

treatment centers. We have many parishioners who have had one

of many types of cancer. We know the devastation cancer can

cause. Please help with one of our many projects to support us

and make donations to help reach our goal this year of $3,500. The

Cancer Walk will take place, Saturday, October 13, 2018. Join the

walk or help with a donation! Donations will be accepted by team

members until Sunday, October 7th…..Donors of $100 or more will

receive a 2018 “Making Strides” Tee Shirt! Last year, our team was

among the TOP 20 Fund Raising Teams!

Let’s do it again!!!
