Pharmacy Ownership – the good, the bad and the uglyPharmacy ownership can be often rewarding but not without its challenges. This session is ideal for the pharmacist wanting to break into ownership and will outline key considerations for any future purchaser, from finance and staffing, to establishing a pharmacy that meets the needs of the community.

Of course, all of this requires some mindfulness!

Given most workplaces, including pharmacies, have multiple demands and pressures which can impact the health and wellbeing of employees. Implementing mindful practices on a daily basis can improve attentiveness, productivity, communication and empathy with work colleagues and patients alike. This session aims to increase awareness of mindfulness and how it can benefit pharmacists in their everyday lives, improving individual abilities to tackle the demands and pressures in the workplace. Developing these skills can often lead to improved self-awareness, a more productive day and enhanced quality of care for patients.

Palliative Care WorkshopSupported by the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission

With the Government’s commitment to expanding community-based palliative care services, this workshop will equip pharmacists with the skills to support palliative care patients and provide an evidence-based approach as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to ensure best possible outcomes are achieved for patients in end-of-life care.

Pathology in the digital eraWith the launch of My Health Record, pharmacists will have greater access to patients’ medical history, including biochemistry and pathology test results. Interpreting these results, and understanding how they impact patients’ health and medication is essential to ensuring positive patient outcomes.

Achieving more for patients: courageous conversations in drug and alcohol misuseApproaching the issue of alcohol and substance abuse can be difficult, and doing so in a supportive and caring manner can be even trickier. As front-line medicine experts, pharmacists are well-placed to identify people with alcohol and substance use disorders, and encourage and assist them to seek treatment and support.

This workshop will provide pharmacists with the motivational interviewing skills to have courageous conversations with patients who may have alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as courageous conversations with prescribers, to maximise patient outcomes.

Clinical Survivor: Lead by the Early Career Pharmacist Working Group in NSW, pharmacists competing in this challenge will be split into tribes and taken to a remote secluded practice setting (surrounded by vineyards), where they will undertake, mental, clinical and physical challenges. What better way to update your clinical knowledge and have fun at the same time! Your chief will provide you with the resources and guidance you need. The tribe has spoken.

Bring your A game to ATU for a chance to be crowned the Wine Olympics Champion! After a long day of learning, let your hair down, take your shoes off and compete in the Wine Olympics! This fun and competitive team event will see you rotate through a series of wine-related novelty activities, including grape throwing, cork tossing, wine wars and a waiter relay. Drinks and canapes are included in day registration costs for delegates. Guests/partners are welcome to attend at an additional cost.

SOCIAL NETWORKING

Immunisation Training & RefresherFrom the expected date of 1st January 2019, pharmacists in NSW will be able to provide private MMR and dTpa immunisations to people aged 16 years and over (in addition to influenza). To assist with this expansion of scope, a dedicated immunisation course and refresher training course will be run as a pre-conference workshop at ATU on Thursday 21st March 2019 at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley. This is a great opportunity for pharmacists to become accredited immunisers, and for trained pharmacist immunisers to refresh their knowledge on injection technique, particularly subcutaneous administration.

PRE-CONFERENCE COURSES

Blended Mental Health First Aid

This Blended MHFA course (a combination of online and a half-day face-to-face workshop), is essential training for all pharmacists and front line pharmacy staff. Informed by a reference group of pharmacy professionals across Australia, this course teaches pharmacists how to assist a customer who is developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. You will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
