Real Estate CornerQuickly & economically increase your home’s value.

Neutralize and freshen the walls. Clean walls in neutral col-ors make a huge difference. White is seen as cold, but col-ors in the sand family are considered “neutrals”. If you think color helps set off a room, confine it to a single wall.

Small issues can be big turnoffs. Worn carpets, dirty grout and clutter send a message that the house hasn’t been very well cared for.

Dumpster Day – October 3rd Mission Viejo’s 2015 Dumpster Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd. The Mission Viejo HOA will be working with Pro Disposal to allow you to dispose of unwanted items from your home and garage and bring them to an awaiting truck that will haul them off. A Pro Disposal truck will be available beginning at 8 am on Saturday, October 3rd. The truck will be located at Holy Love Lutheran Church (east parking lot). New this year, Only Mission Viejo HOA members (paid through the HOA trash program, dues paying member or rec-ognized volunteers will get priority reserved access from 8:00 am – 10:30 am. HOA Members may dump several times all day but at 10:30 am the HOA will accept any non-HOA members or those living in Seville Townhomes HOA, Cherry Glenn HOA, French Creek HOA, Southlight HOA’s and non-resident members of Holy Love Church and Trinity Baptist Church with their trash as well. MVHOA Board Members will be on hand to accept 2015 dues payment of $30. The HOA will also be handing out infor-mation on how to sign up for the HOA trash program. Residents living in Seville, Cherry Glenn, French Creek, Southlight or non-residents from Holy Love or Trinity churches may also dump for a one-time fee of $35 for the day. Three trash trucks will be available until 12pm or until the final truck is filled, whichever comes first. The Mission Viejo HOA is funding this day with the support of your membership dues. Develop Your Career One Step At A Time You won’t advance far in your career without a plan. Every job is different, but you’ll get ahead in any industry by following these basic steps: • Focusonyourpriorities.Identifycrucial issuesyouface

and the most important immediate goals you want to achieve.

• Takeactioneveryday.Nomatterhowsmalltheactionis,do something every single day to advance your immediate goals.

• Makeawrittenplan.Thisshouldgiveyouablueprintforachieving your immediate goals. This plan may change, and that’s OK. The written plan should work for you, so you decide which kind of plan would work best – a six-month plan, a weekly plan, a one-year plan, and so on.

• Reflectonyouraccomplishments.Everysixweeksorso, spend a few minutes going over what you have accom-plished – and what didn’t work out for you.

• Seek feedback and advice from others. Be sure that thepeople with whom you speak are truly on your side and don’t have a hidden agenda, which might color the counsel or advice they give.

• Stretchyourself.Workwithpeoplewhosetalentsaremoredeveloped than yours—rather than surrounding yourself with lesser people just to make yourself feel good.

• Studyyourcraftdiligently.Whateveryoudo, makesureyou are good at doing it. Also, study your company and your industry, and know both inside and out.

• Rewardyourselfforsmallvictories.Getamanicureorahaircut, buy yourself a fresh bunch of flowers, a potted

plant, or a dinner in a nice restaurant. • Buildmomentum.Onesmallvictorycan lead toamany

good things, if you build on each success consistently. • Don’t take yourself too seriously. Remember that every-

one, in every field, has problems similar to yours. You don’t have an exclusive on issues such as career advance-ment, finding the money to take courses, having enough time to meet your goals, and occasional self-doubt. Realizing that you are not alone can help you deal with these problems.

Two-minute Walks May Improve Health Exercise keeps you healthy. Fortunately for busy people, exercise doesn’t have to mean working out at the gym or running a marathon. A study reported on the Science Daily website found that that adding just two minutes of walking per hour to your routine can extend your life expectancy. Scientists at the University of Utah School of Medicine dis-covered that taking a two-minute walk once an hour was associ-ated with a 33 percent lower risk of dying. Even brief walks add up to a substantial benefit when taken often during the day. The scientists emphasize that these walks should be an addition to a moderate exercise habit, not a replacement for one. It’s a step in the right direction.

Encourage Nutrition w/ Positive Language Most parents want to encourage their children to have bet-ter eating habits. A study from Cornell University, reported on the CBS News website, offers some useful advice: Focus on the good, not the bad. Instead of emphasizing how bad cookies and soda pop are, emphasize the benefits of vegetables and milk and other healthy foods. You might put a note in your child’s lunchbox saying, “This apple will give you lots of energy today.” Or point out at dinner how milk will help him or her grow up to be strong. The Cornell study showed that people respond more strongly to positive messages about food than negative warnings, so choose your words with care.

The Glenn Garcelon Foundation Brain tumors affect men, women, and children of all ages. Each year approximately 210,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a brain tumor – that is an average of over 575 people every day. In addition to the often debilitating physical effects such as severe headaches, seizures, hearing loss, loss of balance and difficulties with coordination, brain tumors may also cause cognitive, behavioral and emotional problems. In some cases, these symptoms are severe enough that round-the-clock supervision is needed, forcing patients and their loved ones to face financial challenges after a brain tumor diagnosis. The Glenn Garcelon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation, was founded to honor a man who devoted his life to serving others. We are com-mitted to carrying on Glenn’s legacy by helping those who have been affected by the disease that took his life. If you, or someone you know, suffers with a brain tumor, the Glenn Garcelon Foundation is here to help. We award grants to Colorado brain tumor patients and their families to help with medical costs not covered by insurance, mortgage or rent, grocer-ies, and more. Help us help brain tumor patients by attending the 3rd Annual Taste of Hope, an elegant evening of Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate and Silent Auction on September 12, 2015 at The Retreat at Solterra, Lakewood, Colorado. Visit our website at www.glenngarcelonfoundation.org for more information, to purchase your tickets to The Taste of Hope, or for a grant application.

Give Workers The Privacy They Need Solitude and privacy can be hard to find in a busy work-place. When cubicles are everywhere and you can’t escape the distractions caused by co-workers, visitors, and ringing phones, everyone’s work and productivity can suffer. Give employees some respite by carving out a time-out space for them. Designate a room or two for privacy. Let employees use it to work in silence, to think through a problem, or to rest for a few minutes. Equip the door with a Do Not Disturb sign to prevent co-workers from interrupting. You and your people will emerge feeling refreshed and ready to get back to the work-place.

• Reflect on your accomplishments. Every six weeks or so,spend a few minutes going over what you have accom-plished – and what didn’t work out for you.

• Seek feedback and advice from others. Be sure that thepeople with whom you speak are truly on your side and don’t have a hidden agenda, which might color the counsel or advice they give.
