• Echegini (5 G, 1 A) and Karnley (4 G, 3 A) were State’s leading scorers last year with 11 points.

SCHEDULE SIMILARITIES• Prior to the season opener, both MSU and Lipscomb played

exhibition matches against South Alabama. MSU played to a 1-1 draw with the Jaguars despite a 24-2 edge in shots.

• The Bisons defeated South Alabama, 2-0, but was outshot and lost the possession battle.

• Lipscomb also played an exhibition match against Belmont, losing 1-0. The Bulldogs will host Belmont in September.

THERE’S HISTORY HERE• The last time MSU and Lipscomb met the match ended in dramatic

fashion. Making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history, the Bulldogs were 46 seconds away from taking the match to penalty kicks on their home field.

• Instead, a free kick from midfield deflected into the net off an unaware Lipscomb runner and sent the Bisons on to the second round.

• Five Bulldogs remain from that match: Miranda Carrasco, Hailey Farrington-Bentil, Niah Johnson, Monigo Karnley and Andrea Tyrrell.

EXAMINING THE EXHIBITIONS• State claimed a 4-0 victory against UAB and fought to a 1-1 draw

at South Alabama in the preseason.• Four different players scored MSU’s five goals. Onyi Echegini

scored twice. Monigo Karnley, Hailey Farrington-Bentil and Hannah Telleysh also scored.

• Miranda Carrasco picked up an assist against the Blazers, and Hannah Johnson had a helper in her first collegiate action.

• Maddy Anderson played 141:20 of the 190 available preseason minutes in goal, allowing one goal on a free kick.

• Mac Titus and Hannah Pimentel both played nearly 30 minutes in the games without conceding a goal.

SIZING UP THE SPRING• MSU went 4-0 in the spring, outscoring their opponents 11-1.• The Dawgs posted three-straight shutouts, two behind Maddy

Anderson in goal and one from Hannah Pimentel.• Seven different Bulldogs scored at least one goal in the spring,

and 11 players recorded an assist in the spring.

STRONG START• The Bulldogs went undefeated in their first four games of 2020-21

with two draws and two wins, all in conference play.• No prior MSU team had ever started the SEC slate undefeated

through four games.• The last time the Bulldogs started the season undefeated through

four matches came in 2018 in the midst of MSU’s program-record eight-game winning streak that dated back to 2017.

SEASONED SOPHOMORES• State started at least five freshmen in nine matches last year.• The sophomore class is one of the most-experienced in the

league, having played a combined total of 5,531 minutes in their debut season.

• Of the seven sophomores, six were given a starting nod at some point last year.

RECORD WATCH• Monigo Karnley is primed to crack the top three in the MSU

career record book in multiple categories.• Karnley’s next assist will put her in a tie for third in Bulldog

history.• She is also MSU’s active career leader in game-winning goals (6)

and will move into a tie for third in school history with her next one.

• Miranda Carrasco has 10 career assists and needs just one to break into the MSU career top 10.

PLAYING THE POLLS• Mississippi State will play three teams ranked in the preseason

edition of the United Soccer Coaches’ poll this season: No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 13 Arkansas and No. 23 Ole Miss.

• State is also set to host Arizona State, which is receiving votes in the first poll.

• MSU faced four ranked opponents in 2020: No. 15 Alabama, No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 9 South Carolina and No. 7 Arkansas.

• The Bulldogs played to a draw with Alabama, and dropped the remaining three contests.

• Mississippi State’s all-time record against ranked opponents is 8-57-3.

TEAM NOTES

NINETY’S NOT ENOUGH• State has already gone to extra time in its exhibition at South

Alabama this fall.• The Bulldogs have had at least one overtime match in every

season except 1999. • In 1996 and 2017, State played a program-record five double-

overtime matches.• MSU’s all-time overtime record is 20-26-38. In double-overtime

matches, MSU is 11-11-7.

FIRST BLOOD• Since the start of the 2017 season, MSU is 30-3-4 when scoring

first. • The Bulldogs are 155-37-8 all-time when they score first.

OUR STATE• The Bulldogs defeated Ole Miss, 1-0, to win back the Magnolia

Cup in 2020.• It was the first time State had won in Oxford since 2001, and its

first Magnolia Cup victory since 2012.• Monigo Karnley scored the game-winner in the 19th minute

off a corner kick with assists from Birna Jóhannsdóttir and Onyi Echegini.

QUICK CONNECTIONS• Three Bulldogs either have a twin or have twins as siblings.

Esmeralda Figueroa, and Miranda Carrasco each have a twin, while Hannah Pimentel has twin brothers.

• Figueroa and Carrasco’s fraternal twin sisters also attend MSU, and play soccer for the club team.

• Three Bulldogs played football in high school, all on special teams: Maddy Anderson, Marcella Cash and Elle McCaslin.

• Alyssa D’Aloise and Juliet Moore played together in high school during D’Aloise’s senior and Moore’s freshman year. They also shared a club coach.

BACK TO THE BEACH• The Bulldogs have reached the SEC Tournament in consecutive

seasons marking their first pair of back-to-back postseason appearances in program history.

• In 2019, the Bulldogs went to the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2004.

• That year James Armstrong became the fifth active SEC coach to have made the SEC tournament in their first season at their current school.

• Of those, only Armstrong and Georgia’s Billy Lesesne did so in their first year as a head coach of any program.

ALPHA DAWGS• Alyssa D’Aloise, Macey Hodge and Andrea Tyrrell are MSU’s

three captains for the season. They were selected by a vote of their teammates.

• Tyrrell and D’Aloise also wore the armband in 2020-21.• MSU names a leadership council with each class represented

by at least one player. This year’s group includes Riley Combs, Maddy Anderson, Madison Cotta, Gwen Mummert and Niah Johnson.

KIT HITS• State has a new black kit this season after debuting new white

and maroon sets last year.• MSU’s goalkeepers have a teal kit in conjunction with State’s

softball team to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Former softball student-athlete Alex Wilcox passed away from ovarian cancer in the summer of 2018 and became the first female athlete to have her number retired (No. 8) in MSU history.

• The Bulldogs will continue participating in the Stronger Together initiative among universities in Mississippi with a sleeve patch.

NICKNAMES TO KNOW• With three Hannahs and three Johnsons on the team, nicknames

are common. Surprisingly, the Johnsons do not have any nicknames yet.

• Several Bulldogs go by terms that may not seem to relate to their names, but the chart below will help media members recognize who the team is referring to.
