MIT Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD) is pleased to provide the results of the MIT Class of 2018 Graduating Student Survey and the Doctoral Exit Survey, providing information about the immediate post-graduation plans of MIT baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate graduates from the Class of 2018. Please refer to MIT Facts for an abbreviated version of the results. Thank you to the MIT graduates who completed the survey, allowing us to learn about their career planning experience and share information with other students and employers. Please take a moment to learn more about the survey and the data we collect and present.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the surveys is to promote an accurate understanding of the immediate post-graduation plans of graduating MIT students.

METHOD: The GSS and Doctoral Exit Surveys are completely voluntary web-based surveys. These surveys were emailed as a link multiple times throughout the late spring, summer and fall to capture as much of the graduating student population as possible. Altogether, 61 percent of graduating seniors, 55 percent of graduating masters, and 71 percent of PhD candidates from MIT participated in the June 2018 surveys.

RESULTS: All data are self-reported and presented anonymously in aggregate form. Due to the variety and various levels of MIT degrees granted, the majority of statistics presented relate to specific subsets of the population (e.g., bachelors, masters, major, etc.) and are labeled accordingly. This naming convention is done to provide more meaningful and accurate data. Any data not labeled should be assumed to represent the entire sample.

The results are in table format for ease of reading and comparison. Many tables contain empty cells for two reasons; first, not all majors offer all types of degrees, and second, fewer than two students from that major and degree level responded to the survey question.

Please direct questions about the survey and results to Deborah Liverman at [email protected]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
