How much does my audience already know about the topic?What is the core purpose of the presentation and are my messages in line with it?What ‘buzz’ words will I need to define?What action do I want my audience to take after listening to my presentation?

Use note cards, not written speeches.Opening statement should have direct impact on audience.Use visuals & props to get point across (Fact: We learn 11 percent by hearing and 83 percent by hearing AND seeing.)Don’t turn out the lights completely.

Dress conservatively.

Media is a form of mass communication that you can use as a tool to reach your target audience (aka, your supporting cast!)

Important media outlets include:• Print (newspapers, magazines)• Broadcast (TV, radio)• Web sites (news sites and blogs).

The news is timely information the public expects to be factual, accurate and useful to their lives.The people who filter this information for the public are reporters, producers, editors at news organizations. These gatekeepers decide who has

the glossiest ‘news’ of the day.

A news release is a simple and effective tool to generate media interest in a story about your library.It should answer the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? And How?Make it short, complete, accurate

and avoid technical jargon.

Remember: Media are not scary

Targeted distribution and timely follow-up can help ensure your news will be covered.Offer a spokesperson for an interview.Don’t give up if you are turned down!!

Know your audience and tailor your remarks accordingly.

Prepare two or three key points in advance. Repeat them at least twice during the interview.

Anticipate questions. Condense your ideas into short phrases. Relax and speak naturally.
