MATCH PREVIEW - GAME 3
Two weeks after winning its second consecutive home match, Orlando City SC (2-0-0, 6 points) travels to Ohio to face Columbus Crew SC (2-1-1, 7 points) for its first road match of the season on Saturday, April 1. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET at MAPFRE Stadium.
“[Columbus is] a very, very good team. This is the third year where it’s one of the better teams in the league. They’re very creative, very dynamic, very possession oriented. They create a lot of goal-scoring chances so it’s a massive challenge for us,”Lions Head Coach Jason Kreis said. “But I think it comes at the right time because I think we’re a team that has some confidence of our own, has established a little bit of a rhythm right now and a bit of confidence. I think that we’re ready for it.”
Orlando City visits Columbus after back-to-back wins its new home stadium. MLS All-Star striker Cyle Larin scored the only goal on Open-ing Day against expansion rival New York City FC before bagging two more against Philadelphia in a 2-1 win on March 18. Larin’s winner against the Union in the 73rd minute started with a nifty touch from Colombian forward Carlos Rivas before the Argentinian, Matías Pérez García, slid Larin a through ball into the box. Goalkeeper Joe Bendik continued his excellence against the Union with a stoppage-time save on an Alejandro Bedoya header to preserve the three points.
The two teams last met at MAPFRE Stadium on July 23, 2016, when the Lions battled back from a two-goal halftime deficit to earn a point. Tony Tchani and Ola Kamara both scored for Crew SC but second-half substitute Kaká made an immediate impact when his corner kick found Kevin Molino to cut the deficit in half. City then sealed the comeback in the 69th minute after a whipping cross from Molino ended with a thunderous header from Larin.
Larin has three of the Lions’ goals this season on assists from Jamaican international Giles Barnes, Rivas, and Pérez García. Donny Toia, former U.S. international Jonathan Spector and two-time MLS Cup champion Will Johnson anchor the Lions backline alongside a Uru-guayan José Aja.
Crew SC is coming off two straight wins over D.C. United and the Portland Timbers. Kamara gave Columbus the lead when he scored for the third straight match, but it was Niko Hansen’s rebound goal in the 84th minute that secured the win for Crew SC. Alongside Kamara, Crew SC returns Justin Meram, Federico Higuaín and Ethan Finlay.

MATCH 2 STATS / SUMMARY MATCH 2 RECAP
WWW.ORLANDOCITYSC.COM/MEDIA/PRESSKIT/ORLANDOCITY
In its second match of the season, Orlando City SC (2-0-0, 6 points) rode opportunistic attacking and stout defending to defeat the Phila-delphia Union (0-1-2, 2 points) 2-1 Saturday in front of another sellout crowd at Orlando City Stadium. Cyle Larin notched a brace and Carlos Rivas earned his third assist of the season and made his 50th career MLS appearance.
“I really thought everyone’s effort was spectacular. I thought it was another really strong performance defensively, really from the entire group,” Lions Head Coach Jason Kreis said. “But from the back four, when you look at each individual player and how many important plays they made, headers they made, tackles they won in the box, being in the right place at the right time I’d say all four of those guys had big, big nights for us. Credit to the guys, they took it on.”
The Lions got on the board in the 39th minute when Rivas, while fight-ing off two defenders, drove a low cross to Larin inside the six-yard box. The Canadian slammed home his second goal of the season.
City’s back line, unchanged from its clean sheet victory over New York City on Opening Day, held strong throughout the match. José Aja was physical yet disciplined against Union attackers CJ Sapong and Chris Pontius. He showed continued chemistry with fellow center back Jona-than Spector as they forced Philadelphia into three offsides.
Philadelphia broke through, though, in the 52nd minute when Alejan-dro Bedoya found CJ Sapong for a header from close range.
Pushed on by the 25,527 purple clad supporters in attendance, the Lions fought to maintain their perfect home record. Rivas showed outstanding drive and hustle, making countless runs onto long balls and dribbling at defenders up both wings. In the 73rd minute, the 22-year-old, making his fourth consecutive start dating to 2016, made a slick backheel pass to Matías Pérez García. The Argentine immedi-ately freed Larin in behind and the 2016 MLS All-Star fired past Union goalkeeper Andre Blake for his sixth career multi-goal game.
“It’s really pleasing to see Cyle get a couple goals,” Kreis said. “His partner up there, he deserves a couple as well so I wouldn’t want to say anything about the forwards without saying how important Carlos Rivas was to the performance tonight as well.”
The Union pressed higher for the equalizer and came within inches late in the match. A Philadelphia shot from outside the box rang off the far post and ricocheted across the face of goal. Seconds later, goalkeeper Joe Bendik came up with a huge save when he leapt through the air and batted Bedoya’s header from point-blank range.
The match saw Orlando City Pro Academy product Pierre da Silva make his MLS debut. Da Silva came on for Rivas in the 89th minute. Da Silva became the first player in Club history to climb from the Pro Academy to Orlando City B, the Club’s United Soccer League (USL) affiliate, to the First Team when he was signed on Jan. 20.

MATCH 2 POSTGAME QUOTESOrlando City Head Coach Jason Kreis
On Cyle Larin scoring three goals in two games
“I think first and foremost it’s about the workrate and commitment that Cyle has put in to take himself to a new fitness level. He’s able to play a little bit different way than he did last year and I think, as I’ve always said, I enjoy seeing people that work hard get some success. It’s really pleasing to see Cyle get a couple goals. His partner up there, he deserves a couple as well. I wouldn’t want to make any comments about the forwards without saying how important Carlos Rivas was to the performance tonight as well.”
On Cyle Larin-Carlos Rivas partnership
“I wouldn’t say so, I wouldn’t try to pat myself on the back too much. I think it’s something that really came about in the preseason and mostly due to Carlos’ willingness to work extremely hard and give us something different with his running in behind defenders. Because he’s done that, and he did it at the end of last season as well, he’s really earned us thinking that we want to play that way.”
On improved defensive performance
“Yeah I thought it was another really strong performance defensively, really from the entire group. But from the back four, when you look at each individual player and how many important plays they made, tack-les they made, headers they won in the box, being in the right place at the right time, I’d say all four of those guys had big, big nights for us and we know we need it. We just have to be a good defensive team in this league to have success because there are so many highly, highly talented attacking players.”
Orlando City Forward Carlos Rivas
On his performance with Cyle Larin
“We will get used to playing together up front. It’s just a matter of time and learning to understand each other a lot more. I feel really good with him by my side. Sometimes he goes to receive the ball and I’m beside him and vice versa which works well.”
Orlando City Goalkeeper Joe Bendik
On Cyle Larin-Carlos Rivas partnership
“They are putting [the work in] in training. That’s really where it’s coming from but I think everybody is around them to really push them to learn how to strike partners. Which one brings what to the table. I thought Cyle did an excellent job for us tonight. I don’t even know what position he was playing for the last five minutes but he had one big play that I thought he did excellent on.”
MATCH 3 PREGAME QUOTESOrlando City Head Coach Jason Kreis
On match vs. Columbus Crew SC
“[Columbus is] a very, very good team. This is the third year where it’s one of the better teams in the league. They’re very creative, very dynamic, very possession oriented. They create a lot of goal-scoring chances so it’s a massive challenge for us. But I think it comes at the right time because I think we’re a team that has some confidence of our own, has established a little bit of a rhythm right now and a bit of confidence. I think that we’re ready for it”
On team camaraderie
“To me it’s critical. I think everybody puts a different level of importance on such things as camaraderie and team work, togetherness, but for me and for this Club and for this staff, it’s something that we think is very important. We talked a lot about it during the offseason and during the preseason, about trying to have a group of players that was more tight-knit and that would do anything for each other. I’ve always felt in this league that it’s not the teams that have black and white the most talent, it’s the team that has the most gray and the most togetherness that often wins in this league.”
Orlando City Forward Giles Barnes
On match vs. Columbus Crew SC
“They’re a confident team. They like to possess the ball. They’ve got good ball players over the pitch but we feel we’ve been doing everything cor-rectly in our games. There’s always room for improvement, which is what we’re striving to do every day on the training pitch and we’re confident going into the weekend.”
On Carlos Rivas
“For his height he’s a big, powerful boy. Very quick, likes to play off the cuff as well. Likes to put defenders on the back foot. The combinations that him and Cyle [Larin] have been doing have both been working hard and I think that’s where it’s come from. Cyle’s a lot fitter this year than he was last year. Rivas is getting there as well, he’s gotten a lot fitter over the last few weeks and I think that hard work is paying off for them two coming together. It’s looking very good and it’s looking very promising for us.”
On mentality going into the match
“Keep working hard. Obviously we’ve had the two games. We can’t rest on our laurels, we’ve got to keep on progressing. There’s going to be blips throughout the season but it’s how you recover and that’s something that the boss keeps on instilling in us. There’s going to be blips, there’s going to be other things that go against you but as long as we keep working hard we’re going to get the results that we deserve.”
Kreis has built an extensive career in MLS as both a player and a coach and is a notable figure in the history of soccer in the U.S.
Kreis was the 43rd overall selection by the Dallas Burn in the inaugural 1996 MLS Draft and quickly became a cornerstone of the franchise. He scored Dallas’ first ever goal and in 1999, he became the first American-born player to win MLS MVP honors. After a nine-year stint in Dallas that ended in 2004, Kreis still holds the Dallas records for most games played (247), games started (227), minutes (20,290), goals (91) and assists (65).
Kreis joined Real Salt Lake ahead of its 2005 expansion season and scored RSL’s first ever goal. He played the last three years of his career at RSL. Kreis became the first player in MLS history to score 100 goals and is sixth all-time in MLS scoring with 108 career goals.
RSL hired Kreis as head coach immediately he announced his retirement from playing in May 2007. Kreis led RSL to its first playoff appearance in 2008 and its first and only MLS Cup in 2009. Under Kreis, RSL qualified for the playoffs every year from 2008-2013 and fell one penalty kick short of a second MLS Cup in 2013.
After a successful period at RSL, Kreis joined 2015 expansion side NYCFC ahead of its inaugural season.
The Omaha, Neb., native played four seasons at Duke University from 1991-94 and advanced to the College Cup in 1992. Kreis also scored one goal in 14 appearances for the U.S. national team from 1996-2000.
ASSISTANT COACH BOBBY MURPHYBobby Murphy currently serves as assistant coach and technical coordinator of the Pro Academy. Murphy served as interim head coach for four games during 2016 before Orlando City hired Jason Kreis.
Prior to joining Orlando City, Murphy was a director for 13 years at St. Stephens Episcopal School, one
the country’s four residential academies.
Murphy has a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license, as well as a National Youth license. He is a member of the USSF National Staff and a U.S. Youth Soccer National Instructor, giving him a vast repertoire of coaching experience. Also, Orlando City’s Pro Academy enjoyed great success under Murphy’s leadership.

HEAD COACH JASON KREIS ASSISTANT COACH CJ BROWNCJ Brown joins Kreis in Orlando City after working on his technical staff in NYCFC. Brown also coached under Kreis at Real Salt Lake from 2010-2013, after which he joined the Chicago Fire technical
staff for the 2014 season.
Brown spent his entire 13-year MLS career playing for the Fire. The physical defender played an instrumental role in the Fire’s early success, which include four U.S. Open Cup titles and the 2003 MLS Cup. Brown holds the Fire record for most appearances with 296.
The Oregon native made 15 appearances for the U.S. national team from 1998 to 2003. Brown played collegiate soccer at San Jose State University from 1993-1996.

With Kreis, Joseph led RSL to the 2013 MLS Cup Final. Joseph also oversaw the RSL-AZ Academy. The West Springfield, Mass., native played collegiate soccer at Clemson University from 1992-1995 and made three appearances for the U.S. men’s national team from 1996-1997.
Tim Mulqueen was the goalkeeper coach for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars from 1996 to 1999 before working with the Kansas City Wizards from 2000 to 2004. Mulqueen was part of the Wizards’ 2000 Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup championships and their 2004 U.S. Open Cup title run. Going into their game against Columbus Crew SC, the Lions are the only team in MLS to have won all their games, capturing six points from a clean sheet victory on Opening Day and a 2-1 win over Philadelphia. With a win Saturday in Columbus, Orlando City can overtake Crew SC for first place in the Eastern Conference with two games in hand.

CLB VS ORL
VS
The combination of Carlos Rivas and Cyle Larin created trouble in the back for both New York City FC and Philadelphia Union. The Colombian international is causing headaches with his pace and creative touch while Cyle Larin continues to score nearly every time he gets a touch on the ball. On the other side, Columbus offers the likes of Ola Kamara and Justin Meram. The two have combined for four goals and two assists in Crew SC’s first four games.
DYNAMIC DUOS5

In both his years in MLS, Cyle Larin has finished in the top 10 in the league in goals scored. In 2015, Larin shattered the MLS rookie scoring record with 17 goals, tied for fifth in MLS despite not taking a single penalty. He avoided a sophomore slump with 14 goals and three assists en route to his first MLS All-Star selection in 2016. Larin has scored all three of the Lions’ goals this season.
THREE FOR THREE2
After winning its first two games inside Orlando City Stadi-um, Saturday will mark Orlando City’s first road match of the season. The last time the Lions were on the road, Carlos Rivas scored the game-winning goal to lead the Lions over Phila-delphia on Oct. 16, 2016. City spoiled Philadelphia’s chance to clinch a playoff berth and the Lions went on to defeat D.C. United 4-2 to end the Citrus Bowl Era on Oct. 23, 2016.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN4
Orlando City and Columbus Crew come into the match riding two-game win streaks. The Lions won their first two games of the season - a clean sheet victory on March 5 against NYC and 2-1 on March 18 against Philadelphia. Columbus rebounded from a draw and a loss with two impressive wins over D.C. United and Portland.
STREAKING3
Orlando City returns to MAPFRE Stadium for the first time since July 24, 2016. Crew SC took a 2-0 lead into halftime but was unable to secure a victory. Under interim head coach Bobby Murphy, the Lions roared back in the second half. Kevin Molino scored in the 65th minute and found Cyle Larin five minutes later for the equalizer. In their next game, the Lions defeated New England 3-1 in Jason Kreis’ Orlando City debut.
BLAST FROM THE PAST6
After finishing second in MLS with 114 saves in 2016, Joe Bendik continued his outstanding run of form with seven saves in the season opener against rival NYCFC. Bendik’s lone save against Philadelphia was a huge one, stopping Alejandro Be-doya on the doorstep in stoppage time. Bendik earned Save of the Week in Week 1 after winning the award 11 times in 2016 to go with MLS Save of the Year.
OL’ RELIABLE7
Joe Bendik, Jonathan Spector and Cyle Larin all made MLS Team of the Week after the Lions’ season-opening wins. Bendik made the TotW starting XI after his seven-save clean sheet in Week 1 and made the 18-man squad for his huge victory-clinching save. Larin made the 18-man squad for his game-winning goal in Week 1 and followed it up with a brace to make the XI.
