If you do not know Blackboard well, take the online tutorial. Understanding Blackboard (Bb) can help prevent some frustration when taking online courses! Also---very important---in almost every case when a student has an issue while using Bb, it is due to the students' internet service provider or using wireless internet access. Especially when taking quizzes and exams ONLY use a hard-wired desktop computer----not an I-phone or wireless. Do not expect a test to be reset if you lose an exam while using a phone or wireless access. Alignment of Objectives with Local, State, and/or National Standards: The Management degree program provides instruction in management principles and concepts, while enabling students to take advanced courses that build a broad background and contribute to career goals. Courses emphasize the continual development of communication and planning skills, problem solving, entrepreneurship decision making, and the ability to adapt to a changing environment. MNGT 3443 is designed to develop a broad understanding of key issues effecting supervisors today and to provide students the knowledge and perspective needed for success in a rapidly changing world of business management. As an Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accredited school, the business school must be in compliance with the AACSB Assurance of Learning Standards found in the AACSB Assessment Resource Center (see http://www.aacsb.edu/resource_centers/assessment/default.asp)

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Describe the four essential supervisory competencies. • Describe how technology is changing the supervisor’s job. • Describe how plans should link from the top to the bottom of the organization. • Explain the concept of the learning organization and how it influences organizational

designs and supervisors. • Describe the human resource management process. • Explain the four types of decision styles. • Describe how supervisors can design individual jobs to maximize employee motivation. • Define leadership and describe the difference between a leader and a supervisor. • Explain how electronic communication affect the supervisor’s job.

Preparation for class: To succeed in this class, follow all instructions; spend time with Bb, SE’s online library, and the textbook. Relate content to the subjects taught across the business curriculum, including: Writing skills: Study every writing tip posted to Bb, absorb all individual writing feedback, and strive valiantly never to make the same mistake twice. Set email and word processing preferences to run spelling and grammar checks on every document and every Bb posting, every time. This is a minimum requirement for the real world of business and for this class. Purdue OWL: http://www.owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01 and http://www.apastyle.org are two sites that can help you with APA style. Word also has help in the citation section of Word 2010. Additionally, there are APA style guides available in the library. Ethics: Read the business press, think for yourself, and contribute to class discussions related to ethics and best practices. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Makeup Exams: Since exams are given on Bb, no makeup exams will be given. It is your responsibility to meet deadlines and timelines! Expectations of Instructor and Students: Student Expectations of Instructor – Students should expect a timely response to email questions and prompt grading and posting of assignments. Unless an announcement was posted indicating my lack of availability, you should receive a response to your email within 24 hours. If you haven’t received a response within 24 hours, please email again just in case I overlooked it. Grading of and posting of scores for all assignments will be completed before the next assignment is due.

Instructor Expectations of Students – All students are required to produce their own work unless the activity has been designed as a group project. Evidence of cheating will result in at least a zero for that activity. Students are expected to complete all assignments by the due date, and when difficulties arise, contact the instructor. Email Address – You are required to use your SE student email address when using Blackboard. In addition, you are required to DAILY check your SE student email account. All email correspondence will be sent to your SE student email address. Assignments Exams: There will be a total of 4 exams using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor. Exams will have multiple choice questions and will be posted on Blackboard for three days. You may take the exam any time during that period. The exams are timed and you will have 60 minutes to finish. You may take an exam only once. When you start an exam, you must finish it in that session. No textbooks or notes are allowed during the exams. Exams must be completed before the due date. Do not ask to make up an exam once the due date has passed. Don’t wait until the last minute to do these. Excuses such as Internet, hardware, software, etc. problems WILL NOT be accepted for missing the exam due dates. If you encounter problems while taking an exam, please notify me ASAP. Chapter Quizzes: There are 16 quizzes scheduled throughout the semester worth 10 points each. The quizzes will consist of 10 questions and are multiple choice and/or true/false. Each quiz can be taken only once and must be completed in one session. You have 30 minutes to complete each quiz and you will not need Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor for the quizzes. You can use your books and notes. Quizzes must be completed before the due date. Do not ask to make up a quiz once the due date has passed. Don’t wait until the last minute to do these. Excuses such as Internet, hardware, software, etc. problems WILL NOT be accepted for missing the exam due dates. If you encounter problems while taking an exam, please notify me ASAP. DB 4-9. These Discussion Boards are worth 25 points each. Your initial post is worth 15 points and your responses to at least two of your classmates are worth 5 points each. You are expected to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Your participation in the discussion forums should include the following:

• Step 1: Post your introductory response to the question. This should consist of at least two well-developed paragraphs of 5-7 sentences each.

• Step 2: Read other students' posts and respond to at least two of them. Your responses should be something substantial, not merely something like “I agree”.

DB 4: Autobiography Cover - If you were to write your autobiography, what would the cover of your book look like? Post a collage of pictures on a PowerPoint slide that tells us about you. Summarize your cover in one paragraph. Respond to the posts of at least two of your classmates. Due by midnight on Sunday, January 27. DB 5: Supervisors - The role of supervisor can be considered a first step toward management. What are the benefits and potential disadvantages of pursuing a management career? Due by midnight on Sunday, January 27. DB 6: Motivation - What motivates me? What rewards can an employer provide that will make me give the extra effort at work? Due by midnight on Sunday, February 10. DB 7: Communication - List the common communication shortcuts you use in text messaging or e-mails. Identify ten acronyms and describe what they mean. How and when would these acronyms be used appropriately? What barriers might these acronyms create for a user? A receiver? Someone unfamiliar with texting? Due by midnight on Sunday, February 24. DB 8: Stress - What is stress? How can it be positive? Differentiate among physiological, psychological, and behavioral stress symptoms. Which are the greatest concerns for supervisors? Due by midnight on Sunday, February 24. DB 9: Important Things: What are the three most important things you learned during your time in this class and why? Has it made you more or less inclined to want to work in a supervisory position and why? What word or phrase would you put on your tombstone that summarizes you and your life? Due by midnight on Sunday, March 3. Topic Papers: There are four papers covering various topics in supervisory management. Papers should be double spaced with one inch margins and 2 pages in length. 50 points each 1. Diversity: Population trends suggest that the workforce will continue to increase in diversity. What are some advantages of greater diversity? What challenges does a diverse workforce pose to the supervisor? What would you expect to find rewarding about addressing these challenges? Due by midnight on Sunday, January 27. 2. Employment Law: Identify one or two provisions from the major laws and regulations governing equal employment opportunity (EEO) that you believe are most challenging for organizations to adhere to. What factors should organizations consider in order to meet the

requirements of these provisions? Why have many organizations asked the human resources department to make sure that their employment policies and practices are in compliance? What are the benefits and challenges of this? Due by midnight on Sunday, February 10. 3. Decision Making - Mangers have the primary responsibility in most decision making process. However, if they involve employees, the decisions made can be more effective. While this takes more time, it can raise morale and develop the employees' decision making skills. Identify a major decision you have made in your life. For example, why did you decide to go to college? Why did you choose the college you selected? How did you select a major? Explain how you applied the steps in the decision making process. What other factors might you have considered? Due by midnight on Sunday, February 24. 4. Change: Describe a significant change event you experienced (going from high school to college, changing jobs, etc.). How did you prepare for the change? What fears did you encounter and how did you overcome those fears? Knowing what you know now about the change, what would you do differently today that you didn’t do then? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

1. Do you give make-up exams? No. Please see the Exams section for more information. 2. Do you give extra credit work? Extra credit quizzes, exercises and assignments are

typically given in class or on Bb. 3. Are there excused absences? Certainly. University-sponsored activities, significant

medically related absences such as major surgery, and other family emergencies supported by appropriate written documentation are generally approved. Absences due to an occasional illness (e.g., flu, cold), child's illness, transportation difficulties, and other such matters will NOT be approved. The rationale is that a number of absences can be taken without penalty (see Attendance/Tardiness Policy above) and this "cushion" should suffice. Each situation will be personally reviewed by the instructor. However, excused absences will not entitle the student to obtain extra credit for projects, homework assignments, or quizzes given on the day of absence.

How can I find out if classes will be held in case of inclement weather or other emergencies? Please call the following number at the university to determine if classes are cancelled: off campus-- (580) 745-7272; on campus--ext. 7272. Generally, a decision will be

II. Faculty and Staff Responsibility.

Every instructor or staff member (whichever is applicable) is responsible to provide the student a written syllabus within the first three (3) days of class which contains the information in sentences numbered 1 through 6:

2. Inform the students of the methods by which the instructor determines the final grade in the course;

III. Student Responsibilities. Every student is responsible to:

1. Attend class in accordance with the Class Attendance Policy of the University; 2. Be attentive during class, and participate constructively in class discussions; 3. Perform the work assigned in each course to the best of the student’s ability, and submitting

the same on time or in a timely manner; 4. Comply with all of the requirements that the instructor may demand for the course; 5. Show respect for instructors and fellow students at all times; 6. Comply with any and all University rules, regulations and policies; the laws, rules and

regulations of the State of Oklahoma; applicable rules and regulations of the State of Oklahoma Board of Regents; and the laws, rules and regulations of the United States of America as they may relate to the activities on this campus;

7. Obtain any information (written or otherwise) provided by the instructor during any regularly scheduled class period not attended by the student, and promptly make up any work or assignment that the instructor may allow.

IV. Academic Misconduct: The rights and responsibilities that accompany academic freedom are at the heart of the

intellectual integrity of the University. Students are therefore expected to behave honestly in their learning. Cheating and other forms of academic misconduct undermine the value of an education for everyone, and especially for the person who cheats. Violations of the Academic Misconduct Policy can result in penalties ranging from grade reductions to suspension, dismissal, or expulsion from the University.

a. Student Responsibility

Misunderstanding of the appropriate academic conduct will not be accepted as an excuse for academic misconduct. If a student is in doubt about appropriate academic conduct in a particular situation, he or she should consult with the instructor in the course, the department chair, or the dean so as to avoid the serious charge of Academic misconduct.

b. Definition and Criteria:

Academic misconduct is defined as any activity that tends to compromise the academic integrity of the institution or subvert the educational process. Examples of academic misconduct

include, but are not limited to: Conduct with respect to and during a quiz, examination, or similar evaluation:

1. Possessing, referring to, or employing open textbooks or notes or other devices not authorized by the instructor.

2. Looking at or using information from another person's paper. 3. Communicating with, providing assistance to, or receiving assistance from another person in a

manner not authorized by the instructor. 4. Possessing, buying, selling, obtaining, or using a copy of any unauthorized materials intended

to be used in or actually used in the preparation of a quiz or examination or similar evaluation.

5. Taking a quiz or examination or similar evaluation in the place of another person. 6. Utilizing another person to take a quiz, examination, or similar evaluation in place of oneself. 7. Violating procedures prescribed to protect the integrity of a quiz, examination, or similar

evaluation. 8. Changing material on a graded examination and then requesting a re-grading of the

examination.

Written and other assignments. 1. Submitting an assignment purporting to be the student's original work, which has been wholly

or partly created by another person? 2. Submitting or presenting as one's own the work, ideas, representations, or words of another

person without customary and proper acknowledgment of sources. 3. Knowingly permitting one's work to be submitted by another person as if it were the

submitter's original work. 4. Submitting the identical or substantially the same assignment to fulfill the requirements for

two or more courses without the approval of the instructors involved, or submitting the identical or substantially the same assignment from a previously completed course to fulfill requirements for another course without the approval of the instructor of the later course.

5. Violating procedures prescribed to protect the integrity of the assignment. 6. Cooperation with another person in academic misconduct, either directly or as an intermediary

agent or broker. 7. Theft, attempted theft, malicious defacement, mutilation of library materials, or other

academic resources. V. Disciplinary Procedure for Academic Misconduct: Academic misconduct matters shall be considered first by the faculty member affected. The faculty

member may recommend penalties; including but not limited to withdrawal from the course, reduction or changing of a grade in the course, test, assignment, or in other academic work, performing additional academic work not required of other students in the course. Acceptance of the faculty member's recommended penalties by the student shall make the penalties final and constitute a waiver of further administrative procedures or appeals. If the student does not accept the decision of the faculty member, the student may have the case

reviewed by the academic department chair. If the student does not accept the decision of the academic department chair, the student may

have the matter referred to the Dean of the School. If this decision of the Dean is not accepted, the student may have the matter referred to the

Academic Appeals Committee. The Academic Appeals Committee serves as an appeals board for all requests from faculty or students who seek to have grades or records modified. The decision of the Academic Appeals Committee will be final as to factual determinations of the appeal.

VI. Appeal Rights of Students: Every student has the right when appealing a faculty decision involving academic dishonesty:

1. To be informed of the nature(facts) of the allegations, charges, or reports brought against the student as well as a reference to the particular sections of the statutes, regulations, rules or policy involved;

2. To receive reasonable notice of any hearing; including the time, place, nature and purpose of the hearing, and the legal authority for the hearing;

3. To have findings of fact based exclusively on the information and evidence presented at the hearing;

4. To respond and defend the allegation(s) by; including but not limited to, presenting relevant evidence, testimony, and to call witnesses in his behalf, and to exam all witnesses to the proceedings that may appear against the student.

5. To be provided, in advance, a copy of all reports, data, or other information that will be submitted or considered by the Chair, the Dean, or the Committee in connection to the matter before it;

6. To have all proceedings be electronically recorded. Such recordings shall be maintained for such time so as to protect the record through any judicial review. Copies of the recordings may be provided by the University to any party to the proceeding, upon tender of the appropriate costs or expenses of recording. Any party wishing the proceedings to be transcribed may do so at their own expense.

7. To have all decisions rendered by the Chair, and/or the Dean, and/or the Committee to be in writing. The writing shall contain findings of fact, conclusions, and a resolution of the case. The decision of the committee is final unless appealed within three (3) days of the date the decision or three (3) days from the date the decision is served upon the student, whichever is later in time.

8. To appeal a Committee's decision to the President of the University. The Presidents review is limited to compliance with all university policies, codes, rules or regulations that pertain to the appeal at hand. Notice of Appeal(s) to the President shall be made in writing, within three (3) days of the date of the decision or three days from the date the decision is served upon the student. Notice of Appeal(s) shall also be sent to Chairman of the Committee, who shall send the decision and any evidence retained by the committee to the President. The President shall make his ruling on compliance within ten (10) days of the Presidents receipt of the decision and evidence. Findings of facts cannot be appealed. VII. Appeal Rights of Faculty, Staff The faculty or staff may only appeal the decision of the Department Chair that involves

academic misconduct, to the Dean. No other appeal is permitted by a member of the faculty or staff. The decision of the Dean is final as to members of the faculty and staff. The procedures and notices for this appeal shall be the same as set forth in VI 1 thru 8 above (Appeal Rights of Students).
