• A Smartphone today might be the only device which can boast of offering a complete entertainment package for the user.

• Multiple functionality is what sets a Smartphone apart from all other devices. A Camera or a TV or a Video game could be 3 different devices for a user but a Smartphone today is all of these rolled into one.

• Smartphone applications such as camera, music player or an accelerometer makes a mobile, a device, which is equally adapted to service a photographers need for a compact HD camera, a music lovers need to carry his music with him.

• While stand-alone devices are limited by their purpose, today's mobile is geared towards offering “something” to whatever might be the users definition for “entertainment”.

• Apart from the applications on the mobile [Camera, Speaker, Games etc.] the power of the internet on Mobile provides for a new dimension which changes the definition of Entertainment.

• Informate’s smartmeter once installed on the mobile tracks the actual usage of the applications mobile and also of the virtual world accessed through mobile internet.

• Presented in the slides ahead is a look into what has been happening on Entertainment in the Mobile world.

For the purpose of this report we have included the only the following applications which constitute Entertainment on Smartphones :

• Music [Media Player]• Radio• Camera

Music - Media PlayerMusic - Media Player

• A good music player forms an integral part of most mobile nowadays. In fact mobile phones today are a worthy substitute for music players and make it one device less to carry around.

• According to the 2009 KPMG-FICCI M&E report, Digital Music is slated to overtake physical formats, in terms of revenues, in the next few years. Mobile phones are touted as one of the biggest factor to the changing revenue mix in the music industry.

• The overall reach for Media players is high with 9 out of every 10 user using Music players on their Smartphones. Our data shows that the average time spent on Media player for June 2010 is 13% of the total active time spent on the Smartphone. This amounts to over half and hour [ 32 minutes per day] amounting to about 16 hours in a month!

• We also see an average of 4 files were played by a user per day – which is over 100 song files in a month!

• As expected the usage of Media players is higher amongst lower age groups and amongst males.

RadioRadio

• Though most Smartphone's have radio function the current usage does not amount to high time spends.

• Our data suggests 1 out of every 3 person access Radio. Amongst Radio listeners the average time spends is about 5 mins per day per user.

• Radio listenership currently is higher amongst the lower age groups [ below 30 yrs] comparatively

• Traditional radio on the Mobile is set to undergo a change with internet radio being available today. With the introduction of 3G in the near future we will have much higher radio listenership and also advanced radio functions like visual radio.

CameraCamera

• When your Smartphone comes with a 12MP camera with video recorder and a Carl zeiss lens, unless you are a glamour photographer, you would seriously think before you shop for a separate camera.

• Almost all of the Smartphones have camera available with it and our data shows the reach for camera is about 96%.

• On an average about 2 minutes were spent per day with the camera with higher time spends amongst younger age groups. This includes both clicking pictures and also videos.

• Overall on an average the total number of photographs clicked is over 30 pictures in a month. The number is higher in the younger age groups.
