Performance Certificate AquaFence

AquaFence Flood Protection Solution Becomes First To Receive New Standards Certification.

Certification improves insurance possibilities and widens scope for the next generation flood protection solution.

The Norwegian designed AquaFence demountable flood protection solution has been approved by Hamburg University ofTechnology - Institute of River & Coastal Engineering, for the Performance Certificate – ‘Standalone Movable Flood AbatementSystem AquaFence V1200’. This high level approval, with global recognition, was gained over 4 months of intensive, speciallydesigned practical and scientific testing, the first of its kind in the world making AquaFence the first such system to gain thisimportant approval, strengthening its position as a high-quality, next generation flood protection solution.

Testing for the Performance Certificate was done by The Hydraulic Laboratory of the Centre of Climate Adaption Research(KLIFF) and involved the construction of a specially designed 15x12m2 concrete basin for the live water tests. This ensuredthat the certification would match the conditions set out by the German standards introduced by BWK_Merkblatt in 2005, theUSA FM-Global and the UK BSI PAS II.


Description of AquaFence

AquaFence flood protection system consists of fences com posed of a num ber of in ter-l inked, fo ldable e lem ents. T he fences are readi ly assem bled and d isassem bled. T he erection of the fences requires only l im ited m anpower. T he fences are form ed in such a way that the application of floodwater pressure consol idates and strengthens the fencing rather than weakening i t. T he AquaFence is built for sim ple construction, flexib ility, robustness and cost effectiveness.

T he fl ood protection system basical ly consists of two lengths of boarding rig id ly locked together by a system of brackets. T he sections/m odules arrive at the scene of the fl ood in the form of com pact fl a t packages, which are sim ple to fo ld out and insta l l. T he system uti lizes the innate force of the fl oodwater to stabi l ize i t. T he foundation e i ther consists of concrete or of som e other kind of so l id base. A geo-m em brane m ay be included in the delivery. T his prevents water from leaking under the barrier through the ground. T he foundation is furn ished wi th attachment points, which the individual sections are then fastened to.

T he surface of the foundation is on a level wi th the surrounding terra in thus a l lowing free passage for pedestrians, cycl ists or for car traffic when the fl ood barrier is not in use. Al ternative kinds of foundation such as tarm ac or stone paving m ay a lso be used. AquaFence can be insta lled extremely quickly in the event of fl ooding. T he transportable sections are sim ply fetched and m ounted on the foundation. An insta llation team of six to e ight people can m anage to put up a length of 100 m eters of barrier in the course of one hour. T he standard edi tion of AquaFence is constructed to accommodate floods of up to 120 centimeters or 4 feet in height. This fl ood barrier can a lso be used in coasta l areasto cope wi th waves, currents and h igh tides. AquaFence is easy to com bine wi th other tradi tional kinds of fl ood protection such as d ikes.

The m ain constituents of each section/module are:• M arine laminated p lywood 9-15 m m th ick.• Forti fied PVC sheeting, quality 0,9kg/m 2.• M etal parts in a luminum or sta in less steal .• Seals between sections and foundations consisting of polythene foam plastic.

M aintenance is very easy, m ost of the bui ld-in com ponents are standard parts and can be purchased from AquaFence as wel l as from m ost industria l suppl iers or even DIY stores in the various countries. AquaFence puts lo ts of attention that h igh qual ity and standard parts are used e.g. EN-Norm or DIN

Sim ple deployment routines can be worked out. AquaFence has experience and g ive guidance.

Flexib le design and com ponents that can be adapted to m any d i fferent si tuations

AquaFence can be insta l led as a flood-defense system for re-occurring floods at the sam e place. Using sm al l foundations wi th m embrane in the soil preventing undermining water and clam p-tracks m akes the system fast and re l iable. Asphal t or concrete p lugs that can be closed are a good a l ternative.

AquaFence a lso can be put up on uneven ground, lawns etc, using earth-screws, a second gasket and m aybe clay.

Side-adopters, 45° and 90° corners a l low setting up the system at narrow space or around objects.
