ABSTRACT

Mobile number portability allows a mobilesubscriber to switch operators with-out changinghis/her telephone number.

This paper describes and analyzes mobilenumber portability introduction and procedure

to adobe this facility. Also it describes peoplesand mobile operators view towards it.

INTRODUCTION

Mobile number portability enables mobiletelephone users to retain their mobiletelephone numbers when changing fromone network operator to another.

Portability benefits subscribers and increases

the level of competition between service

providers, rewarding service providers withthe best customer service, network coverage,

and service quality.

Full number portability

WIRELESS NUMBER PORTABILITY

Relates to transfer ability between wireless

mobile lines only and not between fixed

lines and wire-less. In most of the country

this type of mobile network portability is

existing.

FULL NUMBER PORTABILITY

Allows transfers between both fixed lines

and mobile phone lines. Iceland, Canada and

United States are the only country in the

world that offers this type of services.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

A significant technical aspect of MNP (MobileNumber Portability) is related to the routing ofcalls or mobile messages (SMS, MMS) to a

number once it has been ported. There are various flavors of call routing

implementation across the globe but theinternational and European best practice is viathe use of a central database (CDB) of portednumbers.

Network operator makes copies of CDB and

queries it to find out which network to send acall to.

This is also known as All Call Query (ACQ) and

is highly efficient and scalable. Majority of theestablished and upcoming MNP systems

across the world are based on this ACQ/CDB

method of call routing.

MNP IN WORLD

The move to introduce the MNP comes asthe country's mobile subscriber base isexpanding fast, sometimes having an

impact on network quality. Presently, MNP is already existing in many

developing and developed. Numberportability is countries across the world. Dueto new arrival, it costs some in India.Following table shows it.

HOW TO SWITCH MNP?

Heres all about how MNP works in six simple

steps.

1. You need to send SMS to 1900 in following

format:PORT Your Mobile Number

For exp: PORT 9999999999

2. You will get an SMS reply with a uniqueporting code. SMS to the preferred operator

quoting the unique code. This code is valid

only for a few days and you will have to applyagain if it expires.

3. Now your existing operator will check with

new operator & if there are no dues then

approval will be given for porting. You canchange to another operator only after 90 days.

The charge for MNP is Rs. 19 and this will be

charged by any of telecom operators forporting a mobile number.

4. You will get an SMS on the time and date

when porting will take place. The process maytake 3 to 4 hours to complete.

5. After porting is complete, wait for an SMS

from your new operator confirming the

operation.

6. After this your phone may be offline for about

2 hours when the porting takes place. Youll beprovided a new SIM card. For prepaid, the

balance amount of talk time will be lapse.

How will you benefit from MNP?

You are free to choose a new mobile service

provider without having to change to a new

number. You dont have to notify friends/

family and associates about your newoperator when you move to any other

operator. Just use your phone like you always

do.

LIMITATIONS OF MNP

Consumers allowed to switch operators only 90

days after a connection is activated.

Consumers allowed to change operators within

their registered circle only (i.e. if you are withinthe Gujarat circle you cant shift to a Karnataka

circle and so on)

While using MNP, operators don't wants to losetheir costumers easily . So, they divert them by

committing extra offers, which are fake.
