The Choir of Saint Barnabason the Desert presentsAnno Domini: A Concertof Sacred Music from theSeasons of the LiturgicalYear, on Saturday, April 28

at 4:00 p.m. This concert features anthems, hymns, canticles and instrumental music and will be interwovenwith a narrative from Holy Scripture, The Book of CommonPrayer and Thomas Keatings The Mystery of Christ.

The title or theme of the concert is fashioned aroundthe rotation of our liturgical seasons, known as the churchyear, which has been slowly and continuously shaped overcenturies. It is like a great wheel that keeps rolling forwardrepeating the stories ever in a new time. Hence,AnnoDomini, the Latin term used in conjunction with the Juliancalendar and translated as the year of our Lord, is aptfor this concert which is really a sharing of the story ofChristianity in word and song.

The music chosen for the concert comes from the choirscurrent repertory and includes both favorite and interest-ing compositions that echo the themes of the seasons. ForAdvent, Lost in the Night by F. Melius Christiansen willbe heard together with the organ tone-poem The WorldAwaiting A Saviour by Marcel Dupr. Paul Halley, promi-

nent Canadian composer and former Organist-Choirmasterat St. John the Divine in New York City has made severalbeautiful arrangements of Christmas carols, one of which,What Child is This? will be sung. Contemporary Americancomposer Morten Lauridssen composed the choral cycleLux Aeterna in 1997. The third movement, O Nata Luxis a setting of a text from the Epiphany antiphons of thechurch.

Contemporary American composer Lee Hoiby composeda relatively unknown body of sacred choral music. Hisanthem, Let This Mind Be In You, is a rendition of thepassage from Philippians which is one of the lessons readduring Lent. Edward Bairstow in his Easter anthem SingYe To The Lord and Kenneth Leighton in this passionateSolus ad Victimam (Alone to sacrifice), are both pillars ofAnglican church music and they represent the Edwardianstyle (Bairstow) and the contemporary style (Leighton) ofthe great English church music tradition. French composerand organist Maurice Durufl composed Prelude, Adagio, and Variations on Gregorian chant melody Veni Creator(Come, Holy Spirit) for the feast of Pentecost. The organvariations and the Gregorian chant sung by the men of thechoir will conclude the program.

Everyone is cordially invited to attend High Tea on theDesert following the concert.

Yes Sir, Father JimWe send you now on this sabbatical journey confident that God will blessyour every step, refresh your spirit, renew your mind, strengthen your body, and return you to us empowered for the ministries of this place in the world.

As your travel around the country and any other place this sabbatical takesyou, we pray that you will be safe and protected. We hope that your eyes areopened to new and exciting opportunities and that your soul is refreshed byeach new place you visit.

We will miss you, but know that we will continue in your absence to upholdall that is good here and will follow through with our own ministries andcommitments.

Go now, with our blessings and with the blessing of God the Father, Son,and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Grief SupportWhen we honestly ask ourselves which person in our

lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those

who instead of giving much advice, solutions or cures

have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our

wounds with a gentle and tender hand. The friend who

can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion,

who can stay with us in an hour of grief or bereavement,

who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing

and face us with the reality of our powerlessness, that is

a friend who cares. Henri Nouwens words express the

heart of how we care for one another at St. Barnabas.

In August we will be adding a Grief Support group to

our Pastoral Care ministries. The group will meet for six

consecutive weeks. Our Parent and Partner group is for

people who have had a parent or partner die at least three

months in the past and no more than three years ago.

The second group, which will begin in late September, is

for Coping With the Holidays, a particularly difficult time

for people living with the death of their loved one. The

Rev. Debra Asis will oversee the ministry. Please contact

her for more information, [email protected].

    Bishop Smiths VisitSunday, May 13th

Bishop Kirk Smith will be with on May 13th to confirm

youth and adults from Saint Barnabas. This will be our

9th annual visit from Bishop Smith for confirmations atour church! Confirmation is the rite in which we express a

mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from

the Holy Spirit and laying on of hands by the bishop.

We have a two-year confirmation program for youth in

grades 8th and 9th. They meet every Monday night for two

years to learn about the Episcopal Church, God, Jesus and

    each other. Our goals are:

    1. To help our youth develop a deep and lifelong

    relationship with Christ.

    2. To give our youth the necessary tools for the maturation

of their faith and relationship with Christ through the

many vicissitudes and stages of life. Rather than losing

their faith as they go out into the world, our goal is for

their relationship with Christ to be the sustaining energy

    of their life.

    3. To help them develop an appreciation for the Church

community as the place where their faith will be

strengthened and supported as well as the faith of their

    children.

    4. To provide multiple opportunities for service so that

they learn that to love Jesus is to love and to serve his

world. Many of these service opportunities include an

opportunity for the families of our confirmands to join us.

We are blessed to have great adult confirmation leaders (Pam

Bell, Misty and Scott Vogtritter, Hara Evenson and Lindsay

Estabrooks) who commit two years of their time to help our

young people on their journey of faith. We also have three

high school youth (Bo Vogtritter, James Schmidt and John

Walker) who are there every Wednesday as well. They lead

by example by showing how important it is to be active inyour relationship with Christ and involved in your church.

I hope you will join us at the 10:15 a.m. service on

May 13th as we welcome the youth and adults into our

    church community!
