    Modified Speaking Circle

    I. Objectives:At the end of this activity, students should be able to:a. state complete sentences out of fragments; andb. answer given questions using only single sentences.

    II. Materials: bottle big strips of paper containing sentence fragments box scotch tape

    III. Procedure:A. Preparatory Activities:

    1. Tell the students to arrange the chairs to form a big circle.2. Present a sentence fragment and let them read it.3. Instruct the students to supply the necessary words to turn the fragment into a

    sentence.4. After giving them enough time to think, call volunteers to answer.5. Make one student write his answer on the board.6. Let the students read his answer.7. Briefly discuss his answer.8. Call other students for other answers.

    B. Round 1:1. Have all the students ready themselves for the main activity.2. Put all the sentence fragments into one box and randomly pick one.3. Let the students read it.4. Give the students a two-minute thinking time to come up with at least one

    sentence using the chosen fragment.

    5. Spin the bottle. The student who is pointed by the bottle will be the first one togive his answer.

    6. Following a clockwise sequence, each student gives his answer until all of themare able to talk. Note that students are not allowed to repeat sentences that havealready been used.

    7.

    This procedure is done using simple fragments to more complex ones. It isrepeated until the teacher finds it satisfactory to move to round two.

    C. Round 2:1. Present a question and let the students read it.2. Give about three minutes for students to think about their answers to that

    particular question.

    3. Call volunteers to express their answers.4. Make one student write his answer on the board.

    5. Let the students read the given question again and then the answer.6. Instruct them that in the second round, they are going to answer given questions

    in single complete sentences.

    7. Follow the same procedure used in round one. Note that each student must statethe question first before giving his answer. His answer must also be limited intoa single sentence.
