    ENGLISH LANGUAGE MODULE

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE

    The Preschool English Language Curriculum builds the foundation through thedevelopment of the skills of listening, speaking and early literacy. It also aims at

    enabling pupils to actively communicate with others in their immediate environmentas well as develop an enjoyment of the language through the use of stories, poems,songs and games. Through language play they will also imagine and recreateexperiences.

    Vocabulary development will be facilitated through exposure of language related tofamiliar experiences and things in the environment as well as simple selections frompupils literature. Language development will be supported through the use ofcontext including objects from the real world, pictures, puppets and other props sothat language experiences will be meaningful.

    English will also be learnt actively through meaningful interaction with others.Listening and speaking will include verbal and non verbal communication includingthe use of body language, facial expression and eye contact.

    Language will also facilitate the development of emergent literacy. Pupils will beexposed to written language through a variety of materials such as word cards,books, charts, labels, signs and posters. Reading is for pleasure and enjoyment.

    This book consist of five modules:

    Module 1 - Getting To Know You And Me

    Module 2 - Introducing And Getting To Know The Vowels Module 3 - Getting To Know The Letters Of The Alphabet

    (Vowels and Consenants)

    Module 4 - Getting To Know Words, Phrases And SimpleSentences

    Module 5 - Speak, Read And Write

    Each Modules is upgraded accordingly to the topic from getting to know the child toknowing how to speak, read and write. From simple topic to more complex andthis enhance the child ability to master the language.

    Work sheets are given to make lessons more easier and example for teachers tofollow. Songs and poems comes along so as to make lesson more fun and merrier

    Objectives

    The English Language Curriculum aims at enabling pupils to:

    i. Listen actively with understanding.ii. Express themselves orally in simple English.iii. Read common words and simple sentences independently.iv. Write words and simple sentences.

    7. Pupils in the outer circle sing and introduce themselves to the friend facing them.

    8. Pupils in the outer circles move in a clockwise direction to face a new friend. Continue to

    2. Pupils pass the magic box (there is no magic box, pupils only imagine that there is a magic box)

    3. The first pupil pretend to take out an object that they like from the magic box. (eg: book)

    4. The pupil will do the action using the object. (Pretend to open the book and read)

    5. Other pupils will try to guess the action. (eg: He/She likes reading)

    6. The pupil will pretend to pass the magic box to the next pupil.

    6. This activity can be carried out until every child gets their turn.

    Note* There are no teaching aids involved. Everything is imagination and actions.

    PROCEDURES

    1. Teacher sings the letter o phonics song lettero as in diagram 22. Pupils repeat and practice the song.3. Pupils sit in a circle and sing the song with actions.

    Activity B : Getting to know a, e, i, o, u

    1. Pupils sit in a circle and wear their masks. The first pupil will introduce himself/herself to the pupilnext to him (clockwise) ; Hello I am a .

    PROCEDURES

    Activity A : Vowel Masks - a, e, i, o, u

    1. Print out the worksheet below (A4 size as attached) . Distribute the different alphabet printoutsa, e, i, o, u, equally among the pupils in the class.

    2. Teacher can give each group different vowel masks eg, letter i, letter e, letter u and lettera (all the vowels).

    3. Pupils colour the picture in the print out.4. Pupils then cut out the parts of the picture and paste them on a piece of manila card to make a

    mask.5. Teacher guides the pupils to punch 2 holes on the left and right corner of the masks near the

    ears.

    6. Teacher helps pupils to tie rubber bands near the ears of the mask for the pupils to wear themask without falling.7. Once the masks are ready, the teacher can do listening and speaking activities with the pupils

    1. Teacher arranges letter cards on the floor. Each card has a letter of the alphabet printed onone side and a picture that matches the initial sound of the picture on the other side as shownin diagram 1.

    PROCEDURES

    1. Place alphabet flashcards on the floor. Sixteen at a time is good as this allows four pupils to play inone round.

    2. Call one pupil to the front. Say a letter. The pupil stands on or touches that letter on the floor.3. Call out another letter. Again, the pupil must touch this letter with a free hand or foot. Call out two

    more letters. Once more, the pupil must place a free hand or foot on these letters.4. After the first pupil is in place, call up another pupil. Repeat the steps above. You should now have

    two pupils somewhat twisted together on the floor (as shown in picture 1 1nd 2).5 . Repeat the above steps with 2 more pupils. Everyone should be laughing now as they struggle to

    stay in position. Ask the four pupils to sit down and play twister with four new pupils.

    6. End the activity with a sing-a-song session with The ABC Song;

    1. Distribute the alphabet bingo cards, one each to every pupil.

    2. Begin the alphabet bingo game.

    3. The teacher or a pupil can be the bingo master, in-charge of drawing the cut-out alphabet andreading out loud each time an alphabet is drawn from a box or bag.

    4. The bingo master then pins the drawn alphabet card on the bingo chart / board.

    5. The pupils check their alphabets on the bingo card by sticking coloured circle on top of thealphabet read out by the bingo master.

    6. The winner is the first person to have all his / her alphabets called out.

    7. Teacher can hand out a prize to the winner and then play another game.

    8. Bingo can get the other pupils to read out loud the alphabet drawn from the box / bag.
