SILENCE IS THE SUPREME ACHIEVER

Speaking effectively is an art. Sweet and attractive

speaking makes a person popular amongst his friends

and neighbours. Everybody is ready to co-operate and

work with him. Such a person is usually respected and

honoured everywhere. Ability to speak in a literary,

pleasant and impresive manner is the highest

qualification for anyone. Such a person becomes a

naturally acceptable leader for many. We might have seen many such

leaders addressing mammoth gathering and mesmerizing lacs of people

by their eloguent speeches. Possessing an art of such alluring and

magnetic speaking is undoubtedly a great strength and power of a

person. Nevertheless, ability to effectively convey without speaking a

word or observing complete silence is also reckoned as the person’s

strength and power. In fact, sometimes silence proves more effective,

powerful and competent than the long, forceful and attractive speech.

Particularly, in the field of spirituality, silence of Guru makes more

strong impact on the disciple than his speeches on certain occasions.

Even in the normal life, many a times silence becomes more useful to

get the work done than a worthless talk. That is why it is said "_m¡Z§ gdmW©gmY_Z²Ÿ&' i.e. Silence is the means for achieving all.

Once Badshah Akbar and his wise Minister Birbal were discussing

about the power and might of the words and speech. Badshah said,

"The words and speech has tremendous power which can impress,

hypnotize and exert influence on thousands of people at a time. Birbal

said, "Yes sir! Language and effective speech are more powerful in the

mundane and material world but 'Moun' i.e. silence is more effective,

impressive and powerful in spiritual world." Hearing this, Badshah asked

Birbal, "Will you be able to prove it with example?" ''Yes sir, I will prove

it shortly", said the Birbal.

Badshah and Birbal were together at one famous place of

pilgrimage. One evening they saw one scholar delivering a discourse on

spirituality and innumerable people sitting there were listening to it

with rapt attention. Badshah pointed this to Birbal and said, "See Birbal,

this is the might of words and effect of forceful language in spirituality.'

Birbal smiled and said, "O king, now see the power of and effect of

silence from tomorrow onwards.'

On the next day very early morning Birbal went to one of the

temples located in the same area in the disguise of a 'mouni sadhu'

closing the eyes, continuously engrosed in meditation and observing

complete silence. The people visiting the said temple saw a new Mouni

Baba. It was a novelty to them as he was not at all talking. They started

greeting, saluting and making vows before him. Mouni Baba used to

occassionally open the eyes, move the eyeballs gently, look up or

towards the devotee. Sometime, he used to move his hands up and

down; sometime move only the finger or just change the face.

Sometimes he used to smile, get angry or even cry. But he never spoke

a single word. He thus observed perfect silence throughout. The

devotees present there used to interpret this silence and gestures as

per their wish, capacity and calibre. Many people declared that their

impossible tasks were accomplished due to the blessing of the 'Mouni

Baba'. Hearing his ever-growing reputation, thousands of people from

neighbouring and even distant places started visiting the said temple

for seeking Mouni Baba's views and favours. The temple where Mouni

Baba was staying soon became a place of pilgrimage. His fame reached

Badshah too. One day Badshah Akbar himself came to see and get

blessing of the Mouni Baba. While Badshah was bowing before the

Mouni Baba, he was shocked to see that Mouni Baba was nobody else

but his own wise Minister Birbal, in disguise. Birbal saw the Badshah

and said softly, "_m¡Z§ gdmW© gmYZ_²Ÿ&' Hearing this, Badshah Akbar nodded

his head with appreciative smile and accepted the truth.

Yoga is an ancient science – an experiential

science that originated in India, mainly near Indus

Saraswati Valley Civilization. The number of seals

and fossil remains found in this area with Yogic

motives and figures performing Yoga Sadhana

suggest the presence of Yoga in ancient India.

The practice of Yoga is believed to have

started with the very dawn of civilization. The

science of yoga has its origin thousands of years ago, long before the

first religion or belief systems were born. In the yogic lore, Shiva is seen

as the first Yogi or Adiyogi, and the first Guru or Adi Guru. Several

thousand years ago, on the banks of Kantisarovar lake in the Himalayas,

Adiyogi poured his profound knowledge into the legendary Saptarishis

or seven sages. The sages carried this powerful yogic science to different

parts of the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa and

South America. But all this knowledge was in verbal form; non-

documented and the receiver used to absorb the knowledge as per his

abilities and understanding. So, Yoga always had a mystical hue around

it. It was believed to be performed only by Rishis or loners who have

extraordinary learning capabilities. Also Yoga was understood to be very

harsh discipline and only to be followed for years together in isolation

at extreme environmental and physical conditions and its aim was

believed to be achieving of Siddhis i.e. super- natural powers. These

were beliefs of common men.

Historical evidences of the existence of Yoga were seen in the pre-

Vedic period (2700 B.C.), and thereafter till Patanjali’s period. The main

sources, from which we get the information about Yoga practices and the

related literature during this period, are available in Vedas, Upanishadas,

Smritis, teachings of Buddhism, Jainism, Panini, Epics, Puranas, etc.

Tentatively, the period between 500 BC - 800 A.D. is considered as the

Classical period which is also considered as the most fertile and

prominent period in the history and development of Yoga. During this

period, commentaries of Vyasa on Yoga Sutras and Bhagawadgita, etc.

came into existence. This period can be mainly dedicated to two great

religious teachers of India – Mahavir and Buddha. The period between

800 A.D. - 1700 A.D. has been recognized as the Post Classical period

wherein the teachings of great Acharyatrayas, viz. Adi Shankaracharya,

Ramanujacharya and Madhavacharya were prominent during this period.

The teachings of Suradasa, Tulasidasa, Purandaradasa, Mirabai were the

great contributors during this period. The Natha Yogis of Hathayoga

Tradition like Matsyendranatha, Gorakshanatha, Cauranginatha,

Swatmaram Suri, Gheranda, Shrinivasa Bhatt are some of the great

personalities who popularized the Hatha Yoga practices during this

period.

So, by far Yoga was considered to be a sacred ritual prescribed for

special set of human beings having extraordinary capabilities and is to

be learned and preformed to achieve Siddhis.

The period between 1700-1900 A.D. is considered as Modern period

in which the great Yogacharyas like Ramana Maharshi, Ramakrishna

Paramhansa, Paramhansa Yogananda, Vivekananda, etc. have

contributed for the development of Raja Yoga. This was the period when

Vedanta, Bhakti-yoga, Natha-yoga or Hatha-yoga flourished. The

Shadanga-yoga of Gorakshashatakam, Chaturanga-yoga of Hatha-

pradipika, Saptanga-yoga of Gheranda Samhita, were the main tenets of

Hatha-yoga. Here the mystical hue of Yoga started to fade a bit and proper

documentations / translations of the available texts on Yoga took place.

Now in the contemporary times, everybody has conviction about

yoga practices towards the preservation, maintenance and promotion

of health. Yoga has spread all over the world by the teachings of great

personalities like Swami Shivananda, Shri T. Krishnamacharya, Swami

Kuvalayananda, Shri Yogendra, Swami Rama, Sri Aurobindo, Maharshi

Mahesh Yogi, Acharya Rajanish, Pattabhijois, BKS. Iyengar, Swami

Satyananda Sarasvati and the like. Poojya Swami Kuvalayananda is a

Guru of our revered Padmashri Yogacharya Nimbalkar Guruji, the

Founder-Director and Chairman of Yoga Vidya Niketan. It is, therefore,

felt worth having some insight into the inspiring life of Swamiji who

devoted his entire life for the spread of Yoga, adopting a scientific and

systematic approach.

Swami Kuvalayananda was born as Jagannath Ganesh Gune in the

small town of Dabhoi, in Gujarat, the western part of India. His date of

birth is August 30th, 1883. His high-school education was in Pune.

Sanskrit was his favourite subject. The strong foundation in Sanskrit

helped him to delve into the studies and analysis of the ancient texts of

Yoga. In this period, the India’s Freedom Fight was at its peak and the

young, enthusiastic Jagganath Gune, follower of Tilak’s thoughts, was

enthusiastically involved in this freedom movement. In 1907, when he

was in college, a nagging question troubled him - What kind of a

physique should one possess and what kind of weapons had to be

mastered to be able to fully participate in the movement? Gune’s inner

voice was telling him to fight from a position of strength, i.e. a strong

body accompanied by an iron will. Then by coincidence, he met

Professor Rajaratna Manikrao, an expert in handling traditional

weaponry. The professor was also a bone-setter and a practitioner of

unani medicine. Part of the warrior training was yogic asanas to stretch

the body and make it supple. Gune saw countless people being

prescribed yogic asanas for treatment of their ailments. He was

impressed. This was his initial empirical evidence in favour of the

efficacy of Yoga as an instrument for medical intervention. There were

many firsthand direct experiences as well.

Gune himself suffered frequently from cough, cold and flu and had

unbearable migraine headaches. Manikrao assured him that if he

performed the yogic practices regularly, he would be completely healed.

It was true. Soon he started feeling well and his body was capable of

receiving the strenuous weapons training. Gradually he found himself

practising Yogic asanas intensively and yearning to do a thorough and

analytical study of Yoga. With this, Jagannath Gune's life path had turned.

He was now practising Yoga intensely and with yearning, longing to delve

further into this mystical tradition and bring it to mainstream life. He is

said to have set himself three goals – one of them was - Bring together

modern science and the science of Yoga. This goal set revered Swami

Kuvalayananda apart from all the great personalities of contemporary

times. He himself lived like a yogi and a rishi. He built himself a hut

surrounded by a garden and had a pet deer and a peacock. His hut was

named ‘Kaivalya Dhama’. His own Yoga-Mimamsa journal’s first copy dated

1917 was conceived in his hut. The hut was like a miniature laboratory

where initial scientific studies on certain aspects of yoga were started.

Then a triggering event further changed his life and set him forward

in a direction. That trigger was the great Yogi Paramhansa Madhavdasji

Maharaj. Madhavdasji was from Bengal. He was known for his Yogic

Powers. Jagannath Gune met him at Malsar, in Gujarat on the banks of

Narmada river, around year 1919. Madhavdasji was then 80 years old

and he had began to teach the secrets of practical yoga to selected

disciples. It is believed that Madhavdasji initiated Gune into the higher

practices of Yoga. The rationalist in Gune could hardly have accepted

anything without questioning persistently. There is a story about Gune

asking Madhavdasji directly : Can you show me a real yogi in a state of

samadhi? So, on one full moon night, MadhavdasJi took Gune to other

side of the river in the denser part of the forest and shown him a

human, sitting in Samadhi – the total absorption. It was after 1920 that

Yoga became the prime pursuit of Gune. He then assumed the name of

Swami Kuvalayananda.

Swami Kuvalayananda had recognized that Yoga can help

humankind to evolve to higher levels of consciousness and being. With

long practice, it was clear to him that it was a science and it was

completely experiential. His experiences proved what was there in the

yogic texts. He wrote - phenomena, physical and mental that an average

man is not able to induce, came slowly under his control. He saw yogis

and consulted yogic literature. He talked to eminent medical men and

consulted books on psychology and physiology. But he could not find

any scientific explanation of his experiences. He found that modern

sciences, specially physiology, had nothing to say about this

phenomena. And the Yogis knew nothing of the modern sciences. There

were a few articles published in the East and the West, but they were

mostly speculative, not scientific. Then, a whole process of study and

research unfolded itself before him. The idea of scientific research in the

field of Yoga kept haunting him night and day. As the Director of Physical

Culture in Khandesh Education Society, he had access to certain

resources. He had students as subjects, access to a basic laboratory,

friends and sympathizers. He decided to document the results of

yogabhyasa through real experiments using X-ray machines. Yogic

practices were studied under X ray – mainly on digestive track. The

results were very encouraging. These research results were shown to

Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and Scientist Jagadish Chandra

Bose. They reacted favourably. He made up his mind by proposing to

found an ashram devoted to this work.

Swami Kuvalayananda resigned from Khandesh Education Society.

The small hut he had in Amalner, called ‘Kaivalaya Dhama’, got evolved

in a big hermitage in Lonavla in 1924. It had the same name. The educator

of Amalner, had now become Swami Kuvalayananda, the path-breaking

researcher and practitioner of yoga at Kaivalya Dhama in Lonavla. The

problem of making science conform to spirituality was the driving force

behind Swami Kuvalayananda's creativity. He wanted to reveal the basic

Universal Truth manifest in Yoga by de-mystifying it through science.

The June 1924 issue of the journal Yoga Mimamsa states that the

research work so far led to certain following conclusions -

I. The yogic system of physical culture resulted in the highest

physical efficiency, maximum brain power & extended longevity.

II. Yoga as a system of preventive exercises keeps the whole nervous

and glandular system in the healthiest condition.

III. Yoga as a system of therapeutics is capable of curing chronic

diseases and even mental disorders.

So far, this ancient and mystical science had not stepped into the

modern academic environment. Kuvalayananda had already designed

the framework for the institution, which will formally teach Yoga to

commoners in a scientific way with keeping the ancient yogic science’s

integrity intact. It was a combination of western and eastern thought

and culture. There were to be libraries, laboratories and hospitals;

research staff and research subjects; Yogic therapy providers and

patients; classrooms and outreach programs. The vehicle of

communication for all this was the Yoga Mimamsa journal.

He turned down many funding opportunities, as he was a visionary

and believed 100% in his work; all these opportunities needed the work

to be done out of Kaivalya Dhama or even outside India. He strongly

confirmed that the research would be based in India and would expand

to science and classical Sanskrit literature. This shows his patriotism and

clear vision about this project and un-wavering faith.

Some of the first experiments conducted at Kaivalya Dhama were

focussed on the effects of Pranayama. Swami Kuvalayananda was trying

to establish the relationship between the subtle and gross features of

physiology. They were designing experiments that would make the

invisible visible. Swami Kuvalayananda’s prime objective, as stated by

him : "The main effort of Kaivalyadhama is in scientifically probing the

human mind and to dig deeper and deeper in the inner space, till the

effort to conquer the outer and inner spaces converge and ultimately

meet to solve the riddle of the cosmos.''

Other sages like Sri Aurobindo and Swami Vivekananda have been

concerned about the spiritual reform of all mankind, not just the

mankind of India. However, here was a man who had taken his analysis

away from the inherently bounded ideas of Indian philosophy and

spirituality, into the domain of the modern conditions of life.

Swami Kuvalayananda was a tireless worker. Between 1924 and the

independence in 1947, he had made his work known to major

nationalist leaders, like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lala Lajpat

Rai, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and many others. Gandhi had

approached him for treatment. His work attracted the attention of a few

researchers in the United States and Eastern Europe. People came from

Columbia and Yale University, from Universities of California and

Colorado, from Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the Medical

University of Budapest. The Swami Scientist Educator carried on with

his experiments in an ashram laboratory trying to prove that Yoga is

real, that chakras are factual rather than magical. Swami Kuvalayananda

passed away on April 18th, 1966.

Today, we are very blessed to be associated with Yoga Vidya Niketan

founded by Padmashri Yogacharya Nimbalkar Guruji, who had the

privilege to learn the Yogabhaysa under the visionary Swami

Kuvalayanandaji as a direct disciple. Nimbalkar Guruji not only took his

learning forward but his vision too and even more elaborated it into

'Yoga Vidya Gharoghari' and thus relentlessly working to make Yoga reach

every household. Nimbalkar Guruji understood the demand and supply

gap for yoga aspirants and well equipped, authentic yoga teachers. He,

therefore, founded 'Yoga Vidya Niketan' in 1974 and developed Graded

Yogic Courses to teach the commoners and equip the yoga teachers to

cater to needs of commoners - teach them Yoga for every day benefit in

health adopting certain scientifically developed Yogic techniques.

We all at Yoga Vidya Niketan will always be grateful to Swami

Kuvalayanandaji for his contribution to bringing together modern

science and the science of Yoga; demystifying it and making it easily

available for common people. We will be also grateful to Nimbalkar

Guruji to further elaborating Swami Kuvalayanandaji’s vision for overall

human health by Yoga and creating Graded Yoga Courses and taking

My Revered Guru Swami Kuvalayanandaji

My Guru, revered Swami Kuvalayanandaji was the unique

personality. In his heart, he was a poet and a great devotee of Lord

Shrikrishna. In his intellect, he was a great Sanskrit Scholar and

Academician. In his attitude, he was a Scientist, ready to reject anything

which did not stand to the test of scientific investigations. But above all,

he was a great Visionary who could foresee the immense scope for the

application of Yoga in all the spheres of modern life. It was mainly his

valuable contribution in the field of Yogic Therapy which led to

renaissance of Yoga in the present time.

A Pioneer of Scientific Research : Swami Kuvalayanandaji was a

pioneer of scientific research in Yoga. He was a master of practical Yoga,

a reputed Sanskrit scholar, a perfectionist, a well-known writer on Yoga,

an able organiser, a hard taskmaster, a perfect administrator and what

not - all rolled into one. In addition to all these attributes, he was also

a very kind-hearted human being. He loved his co-workers and

associates like his own family members. He appreciated their good

qualities and encouraged them to develop their own personalities

through further learning and practice. He always used to say -

‘Education is a life-long process. Don’t stop it at any moment.’ He was

an ideal example of transparent personality. There was no difference in

his speech (Kathani) and deeds (Karani). No doubt, he was a great

person but his real greatness lied in his loving parental behaviour

towards his young colleagues. Fortunately, I was one of the beneficiaries

of his deep love and affection.

A Karma Yogi : Swami Kuvalayanandaji was a perfect ‘Karma Yogi’.

After deciding Yoga as his life’s mission, he never looked back. He

passionately worked in the field of Yoga with exemplary missionary zeal.

He never expected any special gain or fruits for his work. To work hard

and untiringly for the noble cause of the spread of Yoga became his life’s

goal. I found him steady, unperturbed, calm and quiet even in many

odd, challenging situations. Success or failure, praise or censure, love or

sense as his intellect remained steady and well-balanced in all

situations. He was never after money, material gains, power, name or

fame. He never capitalised on any favourable situation either for his

personal gain or acquiring credit out of it. In short, Swami

Kuvalayanandaji was really an oceanic personality.

Today, I remember my Guru Swami Kuvalayanandaji with great

reverence and feel extremely happy to see that the Yoga Vidya

Niketan, which I founded in 1974 with the help of few close associates,

is earnestly following the path shown by my Guru for taking Yogic

message to everyone's doorsteps.
