Tips for Networking – Conversational Do’s & Don’ts

So far, you have checked your appearance, mastered your handshake, practiced your 30-second self marketing spiel, developed some ideas about presenting your self in different contexts, and are prepared to initiate small talk. At this point, people are often stuck at the prospect of what other things to say – or of saying the wrong thing – as the conversation continues. Review these do’s and don’ts to converse with ease.

DO:

ÌÌ Stick with topics that are appropriate for the situation. If you attend a social event, keep the business talk to a minimum. Otherwise, you will look needy and will scare off networking prospects.ÌÌ Keep business conversations professional and topical.ÌÌ Read newspapers, newsmagazines, and trade publications to keep up-to-date on current events and industry news. Keep your conversation light with interesting facts, figures, and news nuggets.ÌÌ Ask open-ended questions to get the other person talking. Indicate your interest with eye contact, body language, and follow-up questions.

DON’T:

ÌÌ Flirt, curse, repeat off-colour jokes, gossip, brag, or use turn-off language that will paint a negative picture of you and send the listener running.ÌÌ Ask question designed to elicit a yes or no answer.ÌÌ Monopolise the conversation or interrupt other speakersÌÌ Look around the room when you should be listening to – and making eye contact with – the speaker.

UWA Careers Centre thanks their premium partner:

ÌÌ Ask personal questions or comment on potentially embarrassing matters (a divorce, the loss of a job, a lawsuit etc.)ÌÌ Continue a conversation with an individual who indicates no interest in you or in whom you have no networking interest. Excuse yourself politely and move on.

From: Networking for Success (Nancy Flynn)
