MEDC TO PARTICIPATE Officials from McCook Economic Development Corporation have agreed to participate in a statewide initiative designed to measure how well Ne-braska communities measure up in nine categories known to be important to individuals seeking out new communities. Researchers at the University of Nebraska at Kearney are working with Hollman Media, LLC of Kearney to lead the project. McCook is one of 26 participating Nebraska communities. The project agreement does not require funding from McCook. Instead, the community is required to solicit a minimum number of survey responses from residents and visitors. Data from McCook and the other 25 communi-ties will then be compared to aggregate data from all participating com-munities across the state. “We’re very much looking forward to the feed-back we’ll receive,” says Ambriz. “We want to continue to give people an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas with us so that we can make more informed, strategic decisions.” “This isn’t a contest,” said Travis Holl-man, president of Hollman Media. “Knowing what your community is doing well and not so well is valuable to the community’s strategic planning proc-ess. This survey instrument is unique in that it is based on solid research that found that people wanted nine things in any community. Some of those nine things surprised us, but they make up the nine things being measured in the participating communities.” McCook Economic Development Corpora-tion is asking residents and visitors to help meet its required quota by tak-ing the survey online at https://goo.gl/GTJ5y3 or visit the McCook Eco-nomic Development Corporation Facebook page to find the live link.
AARP IS ASKING FOR CHANGES AARP Nebraska is asking the state’s congressional delegation to make changes to the tax reform bill. Several parts of the bill would be harmful to senior citizens, according to the group with nearly 200,000 members in the state. Jina Ragland, associate state director for advocacy and out-reach, says one of the biggest concerns is the medical expense deduction, which 56,000 Nebraska seniors claimed in 2015. “With that being re-pealed, there would be many, many Nebraskans who would be at risk for a higher tax being placed on them,” Ragland tells Nebraska Radio Net-work. Right now, the IRS allows you to deduct qualified medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of adjusted gross income. Ragland says the 2015 out-of-pocket medical expense for older Nebraskans averaged $11,500, which is a lot of money for people on a fixed income. “The House bill re-peals the medical expense deduction,” she explains. “The Senate bill keeps the deduction at 10 percent. It (the Senate bill) lowers it to 7.5 per-cent for two years.”
TWO PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CHARGED Two people being held in connection with the disappearance and death of Sydney Loofe of Lincoln have been charged, but not in connection with the case. Federal officials have charged 51-year-old Aubrey Trail and 23-year-old Bailey Boswell with transporting stolen items across state lines. They are accused of taking stolen merchandise from Hiawatha, Kansas to Beatrice, Nebraska. Both have appeared in federal court in Lincoln. Both have been declared flight risks and are being held in Lincoln. Both had earlier taken to social media to insist they are innocent. Authorities found a body believed to be Loofe’s Monday in a rural section of Clay County. Loofe, originally from Neligh, was reported missing November 16th when she failed to report for work at a store in Lincoln. Family members say she had gone out the night before with someone she had met online. She had last been seen in Wilber.

SPORTS The McCook Bison boys finished second at the Goodland Topside Tournament on Saturday, falling to Goodland in the championship game, 63-55. Hunter Potthoff led the Bison with 25 points. Clay-ton Stevens added 18. Both were selected to the all-tournament team. The Lady Bison finished 1-2 in the tournament, falling to Norton in the fifth place game 50-42. Liviya Wier led the 2-3 Bison with 20 points. Jaden Bryant was selected to the all-tournament team. The Lady Bison will travel to Cozad tomorrow night. Both MHS teams will host North Platte on Friday night and Holdrege on Saturday. John Cook called the 2017 season a “reinvent” before it began. He also said before the NCAA tournament that this year is among his top two favorites in his now 18th year at Nebraska. For good reason. A “rebuilding” year turned into the third consecutive Final Four berth for the No. 5 seeded Huskers (30-4), who knocked off No. 4 seed Kentucky 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 25-27, 25-22) in the NCAA Regional Final in Lexington, KY on Saturday. Not only has Cook achieved his eighth Final Four in 18 years, but Nebraska has reached its third straight Final Four for the first time in school history; all behind the leadership of fifth-year senior set-ter Kelly Hunter, who finished Saturday’s match with 46 assists and now has the second most in school history at 4,041. This year marks Nebraska’s 14th NCAA Semifinals appearance; the second most in NCAA history. The Huskers beat BYU and Washington in Lexington in 2015 to reach the Final Four in Omaha, where they swept Texas for the program’s fourth national title. The quest for five will now go through Kansas City, MO, when Nebraska takes on No. 1 Penn State on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the Sprint Center.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bow-lines, sail away from safe harbor,
catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.
