Comstock and Sargent firefighters fought a pas- ture fire northeast of Sargent and the Callaway department put out a grass fire near a home. There were seven volunteer fire departments from five counties that helped fight the fire. Alma Beland in Taylor is the Region 26 Emergency Manager. Beland says the first fire was in Loup County approximately 6 miles northeast of Taylor and started from a burned tree pile that rekindled in the wind. It was estimated that 2,000 acres burned as well as 600 hay bales. Volunteer fire departments from five counties helped fight the fire including Taylor, Sar- gent, Burwell, Ericson, Brewster, Anselmo, and South Pine. Beland says, “they have put out the fires around sundown yes- terday (Wednesday) both of the fires…of course there were some who stayed on standby….mopping up and watching that….but they have contained those fires.” Beland says there were no injuries reported in either fire. SPORTS The McCook Bison basketball teams split a pair of games at North

Platte last night. The Lady Bison won their first game of the year,

knocking off North Platte in the opener 51-33. Faith Hansen led

the MHS girls with a season-high 19 points. Jaden Bryant added

12 points. The Bison boys dropped the nightcap, 45-28. North

Platte led 20-3 after the first quarter. The Bison cut the deficit to

nine in the fourth quarter but couldn't get any closer. Hunter

Potthoff led MHS with nine points. Clayton Stevens added eight

points. The Bison teams will travel to Norfolk for the GNAC Tour-

nament next Wednesday.

Nebraska lost another key starter and captain for the Music City

Bowl when Coach Mike Riley announced Thursday that safety

Nate Gerry had been suspended for the final game of his career

because he’s ineligible. Junior cornerback Boaz Joseph is also

suspended. Their ineligibility is not related to a violation of team

rules, Riley said, but a university one. “They didn’t do anything

behavior-wise that would be a violation of a rule that I have,”

Riley said. “It wasn’t a coach’s decision, it wasn’t a team rule, it’s

just plain out eligibility. …You can figure it out from here, OK? I

can’t say specifically what it is, but the main fact is Nate and Boaz

are not eligible for the game.” Academic privacy rules generally

frown on and prevent a coach from commenting on the schoolwork

for student-athletes. A senior captain who garnered All-Big Ten

and some All-American honors from select publications, Gerry will

be serving his second one-game suspension this season. He sat

out the season-opener against Fresno State; at the time, Gerry

said he “slipped up, caught me at the last second” in reference to

the first suspension.
