Govt aiming to make Northeast ‘a gateway to SE Asia’: PM

NEW DELHI/SHILLONG,May 7:

The Government aims to makethe Northeast a gateway toSoutheast Asia and was makinghuge investments for the overalldevelopment of the region, butlack of cleanliness could hamperthis dream, Prime MinisterNarendra Modi said today.

“If such a beautiful gateway isunclean, diseased, illiterate or dis-balanced, then it will fail to crossthe gateway of the country’sdevelopment. There is no reasonwhy, with all our resources, weshould remain backward or poor,”the Prime Minister said.

Addressing the centenary cele-brations of the prominent volun-tary organisation, BharatSevashram Sangha, in Shillongthrough video conferencing, helamented that “only Gangtok hadfound a place among the first 50clean cities”, out of the 12 citiesfrom the Northeast surveyed aspart of the recent nationwidecleanliness survey.

While four Northeastern citiesfound a place between 100 and200 clean cities, seven were posi-tioned between 200 and 300, withShillong being the 276th, he saidwhile stressing that ‘Swachhata’or cleanliness was a major chal-lenge for everyone in the region.

“We have to make theNortheast a gateway for SoutheastAsia,” Modi said, adding if thisgateway is dirty, then the dreamwould not be fulfilled and askedthe people and organisations likethe Sangha to join hands with thestate governments and their agen-cies in the cleanliness campaign.

Observing that there has beenno balanced development in theentire Northeast so many yearsafter Independence, Modi said hisgovernment, “with all itsresources”, had planned to bringabout balanced development ofthe states here.

He said the major thrust was toimprove connectivity and developthe entire region for tourism pur-

poses.“All these initiatives will help

to make the Northeast the gatewayof Southeast Asia,” he said.

While an investment of Rs40,000 crore is being made toimprove the road infrastructure inthe entire Northeast, 19 big rail-way projects have also been start-ed in the region, he said.

“We are also improving theelectricity situation in theNortheast and trying to bringeven more tourists to theregion,” Modi said.

Announcing that the Northeastwould soon be connected withUDAN (Ude Desh ka AamNagarik) scheme, he said smallairports were also being devel-oped in the region, while theextension of the runway atShillong airport has beenapproved.

The Bharat SevashramSangha is a network of volun-teers across the globe engagedin helping people in distress.

The Sangha’s social welfareactivities include disaster relief,spreading education, providinghealthcare facilities, vocationaltraining and upliftment of thetribals.

Lauding the role of theSangha in playing a critical roleduring natural calamities, thePrime Minister said a myth wassought to be created that spiritu-ality and service cannot gotogether.

“The Bharat SevashramSangha has been able to dispel thismyth, through its work,” he said,saying that societal developmentthrough ‘Bhakti’, ‘Shakti’and ‘JanShakti’ was achieved by SwamiPranavananda, the Sangha’sfounder.

He said Sangha, with morethan 100 branches and over 500units, had rendered services duringvarious calamities, starting fromthe Bengal famine in 1923 andNoakhali riots in 1946 to Bhogalgas leakage in 1980, the Tsunamiin 2004 and 2013 Uttarakhandtragedy. (PTI)
