You just wanna have a good time, right?Well, Bob Fargason isn’t going to stand in

your way. In fact, he’ll help.He goes off to work each day as owner of

Party Land, a franchise store that sells every-thing from plain foam cups for any occasion to silly costumes for Halloween.

Patriotic occasions, religious occasions and personal milestones, e.g., school gradu-ation, also require their own unique decora-tions — as well as someone to buy them.

That’s one reason Fargason and his wife, Gigi, like their business.

“You very rarely have a customer who’s not in a good mood,” he said.

After all, who can be in a foul mood when they’re picking out Scooby-Doo napkins for a children’s party, or “over-the-hill” decora-tions for someone who’s turning ... 30??

The Fargasons entered the business world in part on the strength of his marketing degree from Jacksonville State University, which he earned in 1985.

“I’ve always liked marketing and sales,” said Fargason, son of a high school headmas-ter. “I believe the Lord blesses you with abili-ties.”

About five years later, the couple started a Merry Maids housecleaning franchise busi-ness. Based in Lenlock, the business location had enough space for a retail operation, so the

Fargasons started a gift shop, then transformed it into a smaller-style party supply store. That gave them practical experience in retail, so they knew what they were getting into when

they bought into the Party Land franchise in 1997.“We just really decided to concentrate on one thing. I wanted to get into the party business,”

he said, noting that at the time it was a niche market well-served in Birmingham and Atlanta but not here.

They sold the Merry Maids business to a friend about a year after starting their Party Land. They have a full-time employee, a part-timer and, at busy seasonal time, their teen-age

daughter. They’ve sold their wares from a South Quintard location for about eight years. (Once the fort closed, it was hard to stay in Lenlock.)

“It was a good location, but when the fort closed, we knew we needed to get down on Quin-tard. In retail, visibility is important.”

One of Fargason’s key duties in his business is researching and ordering the right merchan-dise. He counts that as the more annoying part of his job — “the bookwork,” dealing with thou-sands of different items and figuring out which should be discontinued.

The Party Land franchise agreement doesn’t force any products onto its franchisees, but makes recommendations on good companies to buy from, he said.

“They’ve gone through it before — they knew a long time ago what sells. I wanted to get into a franchise because of the knowledge [available],” he said.

He added, “Because we’re part of a group, we have better buying power.”At the same time, he’s allowed to run the store as he sees fit.Fargason said his favorite holidays for which to sell supplies are Thanksgiving and Christ-

mas, simply because of the significance of the days themselves. He can also supply costumes for Nativity scenes or for Passion plays at Easter.

But overall he likes what he does because there’s variation through the year.“What I like about the business is you always have seasons to look forward to,” Fargason said.

“There’s always a need to celebrate. And that’s a good thing.”Readers who know of interesting jobs — or perhaps common jobs that involve more than meets

the eye — are invited to email [email protected] for a possible write-up for “Off to Work.”

A chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business.A chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continu-ing collection efforts.

The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:
