Joey George goes off to work every day because he saw a hole that needed filling in the Webster’s Chapel commu-nity in northern Calhoun County.

It was a hole at the corner Hollingsworth and Mt. Gil-ead roads, caused when a community fixture known as Hollingsworth’s Store was torn down this past spring.

Closed back during the winter after decades of busi-ness, Hollingsworth’s sold staples, a little hardware and general merchandise. It was familiar turf, and its existence prevented residents from having to drive several miles to a supermarket.

“I waited around thinking somebody else would build something,” said George. Finally, he decided, “if nobody’s going to build it, I guess I will.”

So George, 50, and his family went to work. After all, he had a stake in the community, having been a resident since 1968 and later graduating from Alexandria High School.

“This community needed it. It needed a store,” he said. His older son, Brandon, and Brandon’s wife, Amy, put

money into the venture, and younger son Chris and Chris’ fiancee, Heather, contributed labor, as did friends Gene and Elaine Smith and father Verbon George.

Joey and his wife, Beth — “the boss,” if you want to know the truth, he says — already owned land about five blocks from where the old store stood, so that’s where theirs went up, along nearby Rocky Hollow Road.

Enclosing about 750 square feet, “it’s as country as you

can get,” he said, with cedar posts forming the front porch and green tin for siding.

“I gotta put my benches up for people to come sit and play checkers,” George added, explaining he wanted the space to be used as a gathering point for neighbors, just as the old store was.

“That’s the way I visualized it and that’s the way I built it.”

Its name fits, too. The Little Store is an appellation bestowed by George’s nephew, who as a young boy called Hollingworth’s store by that name to distinguish it from the supermarkets he knew in his own hometown.

The Little Store opened July 10, and “it’s about what I figured it would be,” said George. “I see a lot of people I haven’t seen in years. I get to come down and socialize a little bit.

“I probably won’t get rich off of it,” he added, “but it’s good for the community. If I make a little money, that’s fine.”

His work hours tend to occupy late afternoons and eve-nings, owing to his full-time job of hauling Honda parts for a Rainbow City trucking company. Family members work the store during the day, although George does open the doors early in the morning.

George gets his merchandise from City Wholesale in Birmingham and his meat from Valley Meats on Alabama 204.

“If we don’t have something somebody wants, we can try and order it,” he said.

He said he’s found running his own business to be a good experience, so far.

“Plus my family is involved. It’s something where we can grow with it together.”

A chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remain-ing property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive repayment. It may also be used by businesses that wish to liquidate and terminate their busi-ness.A chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervi-sion and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts.
