IntroductionFor decades, women of all ages have had to make the crucial choice between work and home. Too often we find talented ladies giving up on their dreams and careers in order to raise their families. On the other hand there are also those who are so engrossed in climbing the corporate ladder that their families feel neglected.

But now that we have an online medium with infinite opportunities, you can be your own boss and do it all from the comfort of your home. I gave up my full-time teaching job to become a stay at home mom because being with my son in his formative years was important to me. But it didn’t take me long to figure out that I wanted to work as well, and supplement my family’s income.

This journey began over a decade ago in 2007. I started noticing many work from home ads while browsing online. They claimed that I would get paid for completing surveys, reading emails, promoting other’s products etc. Without hesitation, I jumped right in and bought programs that promised me HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS in a fortnight. I fell prey to many online scams (but a few of those programs were indeed good).Did I make money using these programs? To be honest, I didn’t!

On the brighter side, they were all learning experiences and through those programs I learned what exactly internet marketing is. I also picked up a few tricks along the way that helped me keep an eye out for red flags.

Over a period of time, I learned about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and started offering SEO related freelance services. And that is how I started making money online!

Chapter 1


“ There is absolutely no magical formula for making

money online!

Similar to any other business or career, making money online requires an investment of time, diligent hard work and sometimes money to get the ball rolling. The beauty of an internet based business or career is that you can start off at an incredible pace with little or no investment (read Free!)

Over the past six years, I did master several ‘make money online’ techniques. But lest you think I have amassed a fortune, I have to clarify that I don’t.

The truth is that I do make some money online; just not thousands of dollars a month. My husband and I earn enough to support our family and I am happy and content with what God has provided me.

Whatever work comes my way each month is what God makes available for me. Although it doesn’t earn me a large amount, it is much more than what I would have earned as a school teacher which was my previous profession. Working online from home fits perfectly into God’s plan for me - to be His daughter, a good wife for my husband and a mother who is there for her son. As a side note, my aim is to become a Proverbs 31 woman. I know it is quite a task… but I believe God is with me and He will help me. Moving on to the content of this book, I have tried my hand at different money making schemes online, not all of which were genuine. After many failures and losses, I stumbled upon some genuine ways to make money online which I share with you in this short eBook.


Chapter 2Pre-Requisites

Making money online requires just two things:

1. A computer2. An internet connection

In order to work online, it doesn’t really matter where on earth you are; as long as you have access to the internet.

But just having a computer connected to the internet does not guarantee you will make money online. There are a few other crucial factors that need to be considered.

4 Essential Ingredients Required to Succeed OnlineThese four factors are so vital that they can either make or break your online success.

1. Knowledge – Choose a field/niche that you have some knowledge of, something you are really passionate about. Try to learn more about the subject and become an authority in it.

2. Experience – People will believe you, ask for your work or buy your product, only if you have something to show them. You should have hands-on experience in the niche you are venturing into.

3. Patience – Patience is a virtue that is an absolute requisite in the online segment. You should be prepared for the time and effort it takes to get yourself established online.


4. The Right Mindset – Even though I mentioned this last, it is probably the most important of all. A right attitude is required if you want to stick around in this field.

God has not created us to lead a life of mediocrity; He wants us to live an abundant life. He has placed dreams in our hearts and has also given us talents and skills to fulfill those dreams.

Chapter 3#1 Teaching Online

There is an increasing demand online for quality tutors. If you are proficient in a particular subject or language, it could be a great way to earn online.

You can work part time from home and earn anything between $10 and $30 per session. There are quite a few online services that act as liaisons between students and teachers.

If you possess a masters degree or an advanced degree in a particular subject, you can apply for adjunct faculty positions in recognized online schools and distance learning universities. The pay will also be substantially higher.

This website connects tutors to K-12 students, college students and adult learners. You need to first apply for the job online and get qualified (5 qualification levels). You can then set your own schedule on a weekly basis. If you are proficient in a language and love to teach it to others, this is the place for you. This website connects language students to corresponding language tutors. First register for a free account, then select the languages you wish to teach and include your rate per lesson. You will have to complete a profile with your details, language teaching qualifications and experience, and your teaching approach. When your profile is approved, you can start teaching.

3. HigherEdJobs

HigherEdJobs features more than 52,000 job postings, making it the go-to career resource for higher education professionals in USA. It also has more than 300 online teaching job postings from online schools and distance learning universities. Most of the openings however, require a Master’s degree or higher.

You can sell a simple PDF version online or customize it for publication on Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook.A relevant example is ‘Tell Your Time’ by Amy Lynn Andrews - a short, yet power packed eBook that will help you manage your time effectively. According to what Amy mentioned on her blog, this eBook has become one of her biggest income streams.eBooks that sell usually solve a core problem. In the book mentioned above, Amy shares proven time management techniques that aim to help readers increase their productivity.

You can also write an eBook without doing the actual writing. You can hire a ghost writer to write on the topic and content outline you provide. When the writer has completed his work, the rights to the book belong to you – to sell it or give away with your own credentials.

Blogging is one of the easiest methods to make money online. It really doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from or what level of knowledge you possess. Just about anybody can become a blogger. If you are not passionate about writing, you can always opt for photo blogging or video blogging. There are many successful photo blogs and vlogs online.

The screenshot above is taken from Ruth’s Blog - ‘The Better Mom’. She started the blog with a mission to build God-honoring homes by inspiring moms to be better by becoming more like Jesus. The blog has fostered a community of women who gather together, grow and give their best to their families.

Creating a blog and maintaining it does not require a fortune - you can even start blogging for free! You do not have to be a computer engineer or a graphic/web designer to set up a blog. Most blogging platforms have their own inbuilt templates and themes that can easily be customized to your liking.

A note of caution, though: Don’t start blogging just to make money - it will die out faster than you started. It takes time, effort and consistently good content to build up your blog. It will stand the test of time only if you blog about something that you are really passionate about.


There are several ways bloggers can monetize their blogs. It is essential that you build up an audience for your blog first before you attempt to monetize it.

The most straightforward way you can make money is by selling ad space on your blog. You can use contextual advertising programs like Google AdSense and Yahoo! Bing Network Contextual Ads, sell text and banner ads directly or work with advertising networks like Chitika. You can also write paid reviews and offer giveaways for products and services in your niche. Your blog could also serve as a base to sell your products or services - eBooks, courses, coaching and consultation.


Chapter 8#6 Selling Courses

Online learning is a niche that is rapidly expanding around the globe. People are making lots of money selling courses online as this medium has a wider reach. Anybody from around the world can take an online course as it is not limited to a particular location or country.

I did a course from MarketMotive a few years back that was 100% online. Most of the content was available as downloadable videos and files in their training area. We had to participate in the weekly live calls, complete assignments every week and work on a project. It was, on the whole, a great experience!

You can create a course or online study that can be sold on your website or blog. There are external sites like Udemy and Teachable where you can create an e-course and even host it from there. People are looking for ways to improve their expertise and they’re willing to pay top dollar if your course provides rich content and added value.

You need to organize your knowledge into distinct modules to give the course a structure. You can also conduct quizzes and Q/A sessions towards the end of each module to ensure that your course attendees are following through.

Continued support and follow-through makes your course more valuable and you can charge quite a good price for that.


Chapter 9#7 Selling Your Photos

A picture is worth more than a thousand words! People connect with images much more than they do with words. An image creates a visual representation of what you are trying to convey and makes it seem a lot more real. Both online and offline businesses need images of all kinds to promote their products. THE NEED IS HUGE! If you are a professional photographer (or even an amateur), you can make some money selling your images online. There are several micro stock photo sites that you can use to sell your images. Adobe Stock, Getty Images/iStock, and Dreamstime are just a few sites that let you sell your photographs.

Basic Requirements:

You can sell the same images in different stock photo websites. When someone buys your image for use in their project, you get a percentage of each sale made. The percentage value will vary from one site to another and each has its own set of rules and payment procedures.


Etsy shop selling stock photosYou can also use creative sites like Etsy to sell print and digital copies of your work. You can set your own price and have complete control in setting up your very own photography shop!

SmugMug is another option but it requires payment upfront to set up your image store. Selling digital copies requires a pro account but it gives you lot more flexibility and promotional tools.

There are a whole lot more options available online, but be careful to investigate first before you choose your platform.


Chapter 10#8 Selling Arts, Crafts and Collectibles

If you are talented in making crafts, jewelry, curios, etc., you have a large consumer base online. You can set up an online storefront to sell your handmade goods.

The store can be set up at your own website or blog using specific themes and plug-ins. You can also use online store providers like Etsy, or Shopify. Shopify allows you to start your own ecommerce store and sell just about anything. It has a free trial offer for 14 days (Store launch requires a credit card).

While setting up the store, you will also have to figure out what process you will be using for shipping and handling, and set that up as well.

Free Gift Wrapping Offered by an Online Gift ShopHaving an online store sounds pretty simple but setting it up and building up your client base takes time and effort. It may seem like an easy ticket to making money online, but the reality is that it’s just like any other business. Without incoming customers (web traffic), your store will not produce any income, and that’s something to keep in mind.

Your store should sell something unique and interesting that keeps people coming back sharing it with their friends!


Chapter 11#9 Sell Music Online

Are you an exceptional singer or music composer? You can use the internet to get your music sold through online music stores like iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music, etc.

You can also use services like CD Baby to set up music distribution (worldwide digital and physical distribution). They charge an annual fee for each song that is for sale. TuneCore and Ditto Music are a couple other music distribution services available online.

Bandcamp is another place to set up your music store. It has integrated SEO that gets your music found on search engines. It also offers real-time statistics, order fulfillment and direct payments.

There are many other online music distributors, but not all of them are legitimate so you’ll have to be cautious. Have a clear idea of what you require from your music distributor and choose accordingly. In order to earn a substantial income from selling music online, you will have to build your online brand and have a sizable fan following. Connect with the people who follow you on a regular basis and allure them into becoming ardent fans.


Chapter 12#10 Freelancing

Freelance work can be just about anything - writing, editing, proofreading, data entry, translation, web promotions, admin support, customer care support, telecommunication support, graphic designing, website development, app development, programming, virtual assistance and so much more.

I first started making money online by freelancing. I started out as a data entry support person for a Vietnam based website where I earned my first $100 dollars online. When I received some positive feedback, I was hired for other projects as well. The work was flexible and the employers made payments through PayPal.

On the flipside, I completed a few projects for which I did not receive a payment. I learnt the hard way to pick projects only from employers who garnered positive feedback. I used forums to get those projects, and many members remained anonymous, so some risk was involved.

There are some trusted websites like Upwork , Guru and Freelancer where you can find freelance jobs. These sites act as middle men and will take a percentage of your earnings. But they make sure you get paid and keep track on whether the work is delivered on time.

When you start out as a freelancer, you will probably have to take a few jobs that do not pay very well. These low paying jobs will help you build your skill set and also help you get enough positive feedback to build your portfolio.


The beauty of being a freelancer is that you can take any day off; you just need to ensure that you finish your projects before their respective deadlines.


Chapter 13#11 Do ‘MicroJobs’

This is a niche that has recently sprouted online - an easy way to earn some extra income online. You can’t expect to make a living from it, but if you are creative and talented, the sky is the limit.

Microjobs can be thought of as an extension of freelancing but it includes a lot more possibilities. For example, “I’ll write your message on my knuckles for $5”! These projects are named ‘gigs’ and it is quite easy to set up your own unique gig. Fiverr, Gigbucks and MicroWorkers are websites where you can sell such services in exchange for a percentage of your earnings.

Basic Requirements:

The flexibility that microjobs offer makes it a good choice for stay-at-home parents, the unemployed and retirees who want to make some extra money. If you are trying to gather a little extra cash for a specific goal, microjobs are a good option.

Another website that specializes in microjobs is TaskRabbit. It is an online, mobile marketplace that connects people in a locality to get things done. However, it is only available in select cities in US. You can find various similar listings in Craigslist as well.

It may take you some time to search for and find an idea for your own unique service offering. Create something exclusive that will capture people’s attention. If you can provide value and quality, there will be more takers for your gig.


Chapter 14#12 Sell Domain Names

Selling domain names is yet another avenue to make money online. I tried my hand at this but soon realized it was not my forte. That said, it is still a genuine way to make money online and I have personally earned an income from it.

I started out collecting good domain names, and then sold them for a profit after a year or so. If sold within a month, the profit margin will be low, requiring more domain names to be sold for the income to build up. I had one word domain names like donating.in which brought in a few hundred dollars. I still have a few domains that I hope to eventually develop into websites.

Making money using this method takes time, effort and some luck as well! Finding the right market and buyer is sometimes a task in itself, but it often pays back when a domain gets sold for more than $1000. I am not bluffing here! I have seen domain name sales ranging from $1 to more than a few millions.

Notable domain marketplaces are Sedo.com, Snapnames.com and Afternic.com. There are internet marketing and domain forums where we can buy and sell domains like Namepros, Digitalpoint and DnForum. It is through these forums that I conducted my domain business. There is some risk involved but I found them more effective. Godaddy.com, one of the most popular domain registrars online, has a domain auctions division where you can register and place your domains for auction. There is a yearly cost involved


just for this membership though.

A word of caution: This business involves risk and investment upfront. Try it only after you have conducted a thorough study of the market and if it is something you are genuinely interested in.


Chapter 15#13 Flipping Websites

Flipping websites is similar to buying and selling domains names. I have tried my hand at this as well, and made a few hundred dollars! The image above shows one of my website listings at Flippa.com, a prominent website marketplace.

I developed that website and promoted it online. I brought in traffic and also did some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to bring it to the top of search results for certain keywords. It got 16 bids and I sold it for $350 dollars. I also sold other similar websites with varying profits.

Basic Requirements:

Selling websites is commonly known as website flipping. Some sell websites as they move on to other projects but for some it is a business in itself. A website with traffic and followers is worth a few thousand dollars. How much money you get depends on your topics and your fan following.

Important website marketplaces are Flippa and WebsiteBroker. Just like domains, you can sell websites through internet marketing and domain forums like Namepros, Digitalpoint and DnForum. As I mentioned earlier, selling through the forums involves some risk but you have a larger audience there.

A word of caution: This business involves risk and investment upfront. Try this only if you are good at website development and have a minimum knowledge of online promotions.


Chapter 16#14 Sell Templates, Themes and Plug-ins

If you are good at developing websites or blogs, you can create some awesome themes or website templates and sell them. You can earn some good money through this (I am talking about thousands here, not just hundreds)!

Your theme or template has to be catchy and include a lot of extra bells and whistles to make it worth buying. Take Studiopress for example: They create awesome Wordpress themes that are a class apart. Their Genesis Framework adds a lot of additional functions to a Wordpress site. They charge a premium fee but people are willing to pay for the additional functionality and support you get there.

Basic Requirements:

You can sell themes or templates from your blog or website and it will require some online promotion. If you are new to this field, you can opt for theme marketplaces like ThemeForest and Mojo Marketplace - they are great places to start off. I highly recommend ThemeForest; they have a big audience and their support is superb.


One of the best Wordpress Plugins‘All in One SEO’ Pro

Most of the content management systems (CMS) like Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla have plug-ins and extensions to improve their functionalities. Some are free while premium versions require payment. If you are good at programming, you can code a plug-in to add some additional functionality to a CMS of your choice. Again you can sell them directly or through online marketplaces like CodeCanyon.

If you build a great theme or plug-in and capture the attention of a few big influencers online, no one can stop you!


Chapter 17#15 Sell Software Online

If you are good at programming in a computer language, you can create a software that remedies a pain point of a chosen niche. Recently, you might have seen ads for Nuance Dragon Speech Recognition software. This software converts our speech into writing! Awesome, right? I was so impressed that I gave it a go!

This software solves a problem and helps people improve their productivity. It also enables people with disabilities to write without using their hands. So when you program a software, keep this in mind: It should solve a critical problem that your audience is currently facing. That will give it traction above other programs in the same field.

Basic Requirements:

Software is often sold from the creator’s own website or blog. You need to do some online promotion to get into the radar of your prospective customers. If any of the prominent online magazines pick it up, then you will get a greater leverage. Your promotional activities should involve getting in touch with them.

Another suggestion to improve your online branding is to create a ‘Lite’ version and give it away for free! You can also offer a one month free trial of the complete software. Such promotions will give your audience an option to try your software before they buy it, which will eventually lead to more satisfied customers.


Chapter 18#16 Setting Up Membership Sites

If you have a collection of courses, eBooks, themes, templates and plugins, then you can create a membership site and charge a subscription fee to give members access to them. The subscription can be monthly or yearly.

If you provide a lot of quality content and support, then people will choose the subscription option. As I am in the website development field, I always need new themes, templates and plugins. I loved the simplicity of Elegant Themes and their yearly $89 subscription plan was just right for me. I paid for it without giving it a second thought.

You can create a membership site with any kind of content. You need a membership software or script installed in your web server to run the membership site, though; and this software is a bit expensive. There are free options but they are limited in their functionality. You can also convert Wordpress into a membership site using plugins.

Membership sites are a great way to build up residual income. If you add content to the site frequently and provide ongoing support, subscribers will maintain their memberships for a long time. You can also create a fixed term membership site where you provide content and support for a set period of time. The content in this case will be released in installments every month and builds upon the previous month’s content.


Chapter 19#17 Affiliate Marketing

According to Wikipedia, Affiliate Marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. It’s as simple as 1-2-3!

1. You sign up to become an affiliate for a business (partner). 2. Promote them on your website and send them visitors. 3. When one of the visitors you send buys or completes an action (for example, signs up for an offer), you

get paid.

You will be promoting and selling others’ products. The product creators will compensate you for the sales you bring in. You can start off for free, but it will be highly effective if you do this through your own blog or website. You will have to do some online promotion to build traffic to your website.

For affiliate marketing to really work, your audience should value your authority in the particular niche and be able to trust you. Only then will people heed your prompting and buy the products you recommend. Promoting just about any product will not work. You need to pick products that connect well with your articles and audience. If possible buy the product, try it and publish an honest review. That will make it more genuine and people will follow your lead.

Some businesses offer the affiliate program directly from their site while some have linked theirs to affiliate networks. A few important affiliate networks are Clickbank.com, Commission Junction and ShareASale. You can search these networks to find a suitable affiliate program.


Chapter 20#18 Creating Niche Websites

Do you read Crosswalk, Mashable or Health.com? I do. These are the websites I visit to find the latest news, tips and guidance with respect to a particular field. These are content rich websites built around a central topic. The core subject is resonated throughout the site, but content is further divided into various sub-topics and categories.

Developing such a website in a particular niche is a great way to earn a substantial income online. It sure takes time but take courage knowing that these big websites also started out small.

Now let’s discuss how these websites make money. They make money usually by selling ad spaces, affiliate marketing (chapter 19), selling text links and writing sponsored reviews or articles. If you have a widely popular article, you can contact big online businesses in your niche and ask them to sponsor it in exchange for a link or banner ad placement.

Banner advertising is very effective in these websites. In the Crosswalk.com screenshot I shared, you can see many banners that are either directing visitors to some of their landing pages or are advertisements.

You can also convert a part of your website into a membership site like ‘The Wall Street Journal’ does and provide premium content for your subscribers.


Chapter 21#19 Drop Shipping

If you are hesitant to start an online store considering the hassle of stock management and order fulfillment, then drop shipping might be a good choice for you. Drop shipping makes it easy for the retailer (that’s you!) to start an online store without keeping stock or taking care of the shipping and handling.

You need to first partner with a wholesale supplier that stocks its own inventory. When you get an order, you transfer the order and shipment details to the supplier and they ship the goods directly to the customer. You can sell the product through your own online store or through eBay. Let me explain it further using a diagram:

The major benefit of Drop Shipping is that it does not require a heavy initial investment. You can start off with a little and build it up from your profits. You can sell these products through Craigslist and other free classified sites too. You need to first choose your product line and then contact wholesalers in that category.

Once established, this business can make you money with little effort. But starting it up and getting established might require upfront investment and effort. The margins might be quite low for certain products and only an increase in sales volume will make it profitable. There are several online directories for finding wholesalers and drop shippers. Wholesale Central (free), Doba ($29/month) and Worldwide Brands ($299 for Lifetime Membership) are major sources. You can perform a Google search to find others, but be very careful which you choose. If you fail to fulfill the buyer’s order, it will be your reputation on the line.


Chapter 22#20 Creating Social Networks

We humans are social beings. We love to connect and share things with our friends and loved ones; that is the reason social networks are becoming a success online. They provide a point of connection to people who are otherwise too busy with their hectic schedules.

When Pinterest was launched, it became an instant hit with moms and girls across the globe. Soon big businesses followed suit and it is now a major social media channel to derive traffic and income. At first, Pinterest did not monetize its large audience like Facebook does through ads and sponsored posts but later joined the fray.

You can choose a particular topic you are interested in and start a social network around that. I love reading books, so I developed a Wordpress website and converted it into a social network focused on books using the free social network plugin, Buddypress. I don’t have the website now although I still have the domain. I pulled it down a few year back!

I share this information here, so you can learn from my mistakes. I didn’t plan the content, update the website or do any online promotions that are vital for a website’s growth.

Imagine going to Pinterest and seeing the same pins every time you visit. Will you visit the site again? No! When you build a social network (or any website or blog for that matter), you must provide something interesting and relevant for the audience to keep them coming back for more.


There are several scripts (free as well as paid) available which when installed on your server create fully functional social networks. You can also start yours using remotely-hosted social network providers like Ning and SocialGo.


Chapter 23#21 Selling Services Online

Selling services is bit different from those offered as freelance work. Let’s take PayPal for example, it is a service that helps us send (or receive) money from people across the globe for a nominal fee. There are many other online payment facilitators that offer services like PayPal.

There are also domain registrars, web hosting providers, email marketing providers, ad networks, affiliate networks… and the list goes on. This is a genuine way people are making money online.

My web hosting provider is InMotion Hosting and I have been using their service for the last few years. I am happy with their service and I continue to pay them year after year. Another example is TripAdvisor - a site where you can book flights, hotels and resorts. It caters to all your travel needs and also provides user reviews. They act as a middle man between major airlines and end customers.

You can start a service website that makes use of your core strength and passion. For a service website to really take off, it should be focused on user needs and satisfaction. Your website should be user friendly and your call-to-action banners and buttons should be visible on the main landing pages.

Setting up an online service requires initial funding to get the website up and running with the required features. You will also need a team to get it all done. You can team up with likeminded people and create a start-up business. You can always outsource activities that are not your core strengths and focus on what you do well.


Chapter 24One Last Word...

I have one last word (or rather, phrase) for you before I conclude this eBook:

“Don’t give up”.

It won’t be a smooth journey but be confident of one thing - there is money to be made online. Do you know the year Google was established? It was in 1998. Yes, Google is just 20+ years old and it is now worth more than $200 Billion. It is an online business that started out as a simple search engine (not so simple!). This just goes to show that there is indeed money to be made online.

One thing you need to avoid is what is commonly called ‘Shiny New Object Syndrome’. The shiny new object syndrome is a fiend that hounds all work at home entrepreneurs. It sidetracks you from focusing on a particular project.

I have fallen into its trap, trying different ways to make money online… all at the same time! I spent more than $500 purchasing eBooks and courses but I made very little money using the concepts I learnt from them. Well, some were quite good, but I didn’t put everything I learned to action. I was scared… to take action, to take a risk, to face failure!

I procrastinated… The only thing I did right? I persevered! Even with no money coming in, I used to work 6 to 7 hours every day. At times my relatives and even my sweet husband made fun of me as I was always in front of the computer but not making a cent.

By the end of my second year, I started making some money, mainly through freelance jobs. I slowly learned to focus but it was not easy for me. I still have problem in focusing but I submit my weaknesses to my God. His Grace is sufficient for me!

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12 : 9-10)

It has been difficult to open up and share all my failures in this eBook. But I did it for you to learn from my mistakes and to encourage those who are going through the same phase.

If there is just one thing to take away from this eBook, it is this:Focused action is the key to online success.
