Reflections: Of a Secret SantaWritten by Rachel Essaff Maher

Like so many others, I went out shopping on Black Friday. Pushing

my shopping cart through the crowded isles at one oclock in the

morning, I thought about what to buy for my boys and found myself

glancing into the shopping carts of other holiday shoppers. Al l

around me, people were buying electronic doodads and intricate play

sets of toys I have never heard of, but I prefer the basics: Legos and action figures.

One woman was standing in the Lego isle, a distraught expression on her face. She had

her cell phone out and was shopping online while standing there with a cartful of Lego

boxes. Walmart.com has these same Legos so much cheaper and with free shipping,

she warned me, Ive already put five sets back on the shelves! I murmured some sort of response while glancing at the astronomical prices of the

Legos, none of which were on sale at all. My boys love Legos, but Ive never paid full

price for anything and I wasnt about to start then. In fact, I have found that the best way

to approach holiday shopping is to pretend that you only have half the amount of money

to spend and only one cart to fill. Fill it wisely and fill it inexpensively.

Since it was Black Friday, I had also vowed not to buy anything if it wasnt on sale.

Otherwise, there is no point in being out at one oclock in the morning. My rule: if

youre there to take advantage of the sales, only shop the sales. Most stores get you in

the door by luring you in with the sales flier, knowing full well that most people will try

to do all of their shopping while they are there because its just easier that way. But you

have to be smarter than the store. After all, chances are that everything on your list will

be on sale at some point between now and the Big Day.

Unlike so many of the other frenzied, frantic shoppers, I never really feel pressured

or panicked while holiday shopping. It can be a lot of fun to take my time and to plan

out every gift so that it is both thoughtful and exciting. I try to imagine what each of my

children will say when they open their gifts. As I placed two Transformers in my cart, I

could not help but smile at the idea of my oldest son opening them. His eyes will gowide. His mouth will drop open and he will cheer loudly, How did Santa know I wanted

    these!?

Meanwhile, my other two boys will be laughing and hugging their own action figures,

and my husband and I will share that secret smile as he says, Gee, that Santa he must

    really love you guys.

    Yes. Yes, he does.
