LIFESTYLE FEATURESaturday HouseKin Kin Chilli Pan Mee Chinese New Year Finds in the Neighbourhood

It is time to send off the old year and welcome a new one. The Year of the Goat had its highs and lows and we’re all set to welcome the exuberance which the Year of the Monkey promises!

Teckwah’s Chairman, Thomas Chua, in his address to the Group, has highlighted that 2015 was better than 2014 due to the many opportunities that presented themselves. Nevertheless, without the hard work of everyone, we would not have been able to leverage on those opportunities and achieve good results. He, therefore, sincerely thanked everyone for their hard work and contribution. He emphasised that 2016 would present lots of challenges for Singapore and the rest of the world. In order to remain competitive and not to be left behind by change, everyone has to take responsibility for enhancing their skills, improving efficiency, raising productivity and being customer-centric. For the full text of our Chairman’s message, please refer to page 3.

After moving into our new premises, Pixel Red, the installation of a new gallery depicting our history commenced. The gallery is reminiscent of Teckwah in the 70s / 80s. Beginning at the hall of Lobby A the gallery continues up to the 5th floor. In this short expanse of space, viewers are able to experience Teckwah’s rich history in its entirety. We encourage you to take a tour of the gallery and share with us your thoughts.

CaiXun’s newly-introduced Lifestyle column highlighting nearby eateries has met been met with great enthusiasm by staff. Many staff now take with them a map to find the various featured outlets. They readily shared their feedback and comments on those eateries as well as made other recommendations of their own. The Editorial Team would like to extend our thanks to all who have contributed ideas, given their opinions and offered suggestions to us.

Belated New Year greetings to you all for 2016. As we close the chapter on 2015, we look forward to new initiatives and opportunities in the coming year.

2015 was a good year for Teckwah as a group when compared with 2014. There are several reasons for our positive performance. Firstly, the results are the fruits of our strategy, put in place during the previous years, of containing costs, increasing efficiencies and leveraging on greater synergies. We moved our high volume and more labour intensive operations to Iskandar, Malaysia. We invested in and relocated to Pixel Red, our new corporate headquarters which resulted in saving of rental cost. All these measures, coupled with higher demand from some of our customers from Print and Non-Print business, in Singapore and overseas, contributed to higher sales.

Of course, even with all the positive factors highlighted above, our performance could not have been achieved without your efforts. I sincerely thank you for your hard work and dedication during the year.

2016 is expected to be a challenging year for both Singapore and the world. China’s weakened economy and the outcome of measures taken to rebalance it will have far reaching impact not only on us, but on the world at large. The collapse of oil price to the lowest in more than a decade could lead to much economic turmoil. We thus have to be prepared for difficult times.

Bearing this in mind, Teckwah’s management team came together for a strategic planning workshop in 2015 to chart Teckwah’s future. We have conceptualised a roadmap of where we should be and how to get there with an action plan comprising of four main thrusts for the Group. More details will be shared with you sometime in the first quarter of 2016. Suffice to say, in order for us to remain relevant and competitive, each of us has to own the responsibility of upgrading skills, improving efficiency and effectiveness and being customer-centric.

It leaves me now to wish you all the best for 2016. The Chinese New Year is soon to be upon us. I wish you 新年快乐 万事如意.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE FOR 2016Dear Colleagues,

Highlights of the Results:

Print-related business accounted for 63.6% of the Group’s revenue. Its revenue increased by 15.6% from $26.5 million to $30.6 million mainly due to higher demand from existing customers.

Non-print related business accounted for 36.4% of the Group’s total revenue. Its revenue increased marginally by 0.9% to $17.5 million, due to end of life of certain projects that offset the general increase in demand from other new and existing customer projects.

Singapore operations remained the top revenue contributor at 62.3% with China the second largest at 27.0%.

Commenting on the competitive conditions of our industry that might affect us in the next reporting period and the next 12 months, Thomas Chua, our Chairman & Managing Director, said, “The improved results this quarter were due to a combination of higher revenue from customers, the absence of one-off expenses incurred last year, and the cost savings from operating at Pixel Red and Iskandar. The Group’s strategic decisions over the past few years to relocate high volume production facilities to Iskandar, and to construct and own our Headquarters have helped to improve and contain operational costs significantly. These decisions have gradually delivered results that exceeded expectations amidst difficult times. Management is, however mindful that the global economic outlook remains uncertain and will continue to take steps to be competitive and seek new upstream activities to widen our revenue sources.”

TECKWAH ANNOUNCED

FY2015 Q3 RESULTS

On 10 October 2015, PT Teckwah Paper Products Indonesia celebrated its 20th birthday.

It was a simple, yet memorable, event that was attended by more than 300 staff including their management team and some colleagues from Singapore.

The celebration started with the singing of the Teckwah Song. He also urged the team to continue providing quality service to their customers. After the speech, James was invited to cut the birthday cake. Everyone proceeded to lunch thereafter.

As part of our Business Continuity Management, an integrated of exercise was carried out in early December. The exercise not only tested Teckwah’s readiness for implementing disaster recovery efforts, it also verified the response level of other parties involved including Teckwah customers and partners.

The exercise was carried out in the new, fully-equipped Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and involved a record number of participants from the Management and Heads of Departments, to executives of various business functions. Familiarisation of the new EOC was one of the objectives of this exercise. Activation tests of the various recovery functions also provided checkpoints for further improvement in future exercises.

Come February, visitors to Teckwah can look forward to experiencing the company’s history and growth over the last four decades in a more engaging manner.

The Teckwah Gallery, a showcase of Teckwah’s history, business transformation, culture and philosophies, is a two-part gallery. The 20-minute Corporate Gallery tells the story of the company’s inception, the growth of the businesses, the challenges faced and the milestones celebrated, all through a touch screen panel incorporating rotoscope technology. Video footages and carefully selected soundtracks bring to life some of the significant milestones witnessed over the past decades.

The display of old machines from the early years against a specially treated wall bearing aged posters and furnishings graphics creates a life-like experience of the olden day of Teckwah’s shop floor – a sight the new

generation of Teckwah staff have not had the opportunity of seeing, let alone visitors.

A second, more human-focused, albeit no less significant, part of the showcase continues on Level 5, the General Office, where static panels and a digital album of the various staff activities and events celebrated over the years depict the company’s core values and strong emphasis on staff training and development.

The second part, the Business Gallery, showcases Teckwah’s various business offerings through a myriad display of static visuals, multimedia presentations with exciting LED effects, as well as actual show and tell of successful campaigns managed by the business teams. This 15-minute business presentation culminates in a 3D holographic projection – Change versus Unchange - of the values and philosophies which underpin the success Teckwah has achieved today.

ANOTHER FEATHER IN OUR CAP

Teckwah Logistics has been awarded the GDPMDS (Good Distribution Practices for Medical Devices) Certification in November 2015.

This certification is the endorsement of Teckwah Logistics’ quality management system in its distribution practices of medical devices that ensures the devices are consistently stored, transported and handled under suitable conditions in accordance with the product specification.

Our heartiest congratulations to Teckwah Logistics for being certified to GDPMDS standard.

On 8 October 2015, Teckwah was honoured to be a recipient of the inaugural Productivity Partners Recognition. Selected organisations received the memento of Recognition from Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister of Manpower and the Guest-of-Honour for the Manufacturing Productivity Technology Centre (MPTC) Annual Conference 2015. Extended by the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (“SIMTech”), the Productivity Partners Recognition-Towards Lean Enterprises, is to acknowledge the efforts of organisations in driving and increasing productivity, while at the same time, creating and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Teckwah’s Productivity journey with SIMTech began in 2011, when a selected team of staff from key operational and supporting functions, attended the OMNI (previously known as “SME Manufacturing Excellence”) Programme led by a team research scientists at SIMTech.

With the onset of the manpower crunch, OMNI was an opportune programme to drive the organisation’s productivity to the next level. Named “Project Sesame”, a total of 17 productivity improvement initiatives, under the mentorship of SIMTech, were implemented company-wide. These initiatives generated over S$800,000 worth of annualised savings in labour and material.

Four years on, Teckwah continues to stay informed of productivity-related updates and initiatives introduced at SIMTech. As SIMTech continues to support organisations like Teckwah, we continue to learn, unlearn and re-learn in our journey towards productivity excellence.

Employment of mature workers adds value to the organisation as the worker brings with them a great deal of experience and skills. It also helps ease the manpower crunch in a tight manpower market like Singapore.

Over the past years, Teckwah has provided re-employment opportunities to its mature workers who reach the retirement age. Adjustments to work arrangements and re-aligning job expectations have not only helped mature employees to remain employable, they continue to contribute to the team and the organisation. Cheng A-tai is a 79 years old operator who has been working in Teckwah for 25 years. He was re-employed on contract terms when he reached the retirement age.

When he joined Teckwah in 1990, his daily task was to handle laminated printed sheets that came out of the laminating machine. In recent years, he was reassigned to the Kitting Department where he did simple packing of finished goods while working alongside trainee operators who are easily one-third his age. Cheng A-tai officially retired from Teckwah on 31 December 2015.

Cheng A-tai can still recall unforgettable moments working in “108” (Teckwah’s premises at 108 International Road from 1990 to

ACTIVE EMPLOYMENT – SENIOR EMPLOYEE

Cheng A-tai1998) where he used to see the fatherly figure of late Mr Chua, Teckwah’s Founder, who often walked around the shopfloor, chatting with him and his fellow colleagues.

The father of five children, Cheng A-tai, is now living with one of his sons, his daughter-in-law and two grandchildren in Pasir Ris. He has plans to continue to be active after retirement and may perhaps spend more time exploring his neighbourhood!

Dunman High Work Experience Programme (WEP) 2015

Dunman High School organised the Work Experience Programme for their Year 4 and 5 students. Through Work experience, the School hopes that the students will: • Acquire positive attitudes towards work and values• Increase in their understanding of personal values and interests and the working world• Clarify personal career options and aspirations Gan Jia Ying and Tan Zi Rong from Dunman High School who came to Teckwah for the Programme on 9 to 20 November 2015. They were assigned to Print on Demand (POD) whereby they experienced the complete flow of manufacturing processes for digital printing.

I like the company vision “共荣” – share the prosperity - and the close knitted culture, as well as the staff committees such as 3S, 5S, etc which I thought were quite unique and interesting. Tan Zi Rong

I have learnt the printing processes and how to collate documents for Flight Path. Everyone in the department was friendly and helpful.

The 3S Committee had a good start in the new term when a simple, yet meaningful, gesture of recycling paper eventually got everyone in on the act of protecting our environment!

The ‘Go GREEN” initiative encourages Teckwahers to dispose of their paper waste into the recycling bins. It was proposed by our HR colleague through a 3S submission, suggesting to collect used newspapers for recycling at the end of the day instead of discarding them after reading. The suggestion was adopted and implemented almost immediately, and has resulted in a company-wide effort to recycle all forms of paper waste from the office to the production areas.

Still remember the department bonding we had last year? Team bonding events were held again in Q4 2015. Initiated and subsidised by the Stuff Club, each department, jointly or separately, organised their own fun activities, such as BBQ, Singing and Drinking.

Staff spent a happy and joyful time with colleagues, escaping from the busy work schedule. Most importantly they had a rare opportunity to get to know each other better in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. This is the exact objective of team bonding which fosters connections between colleagues and bolsters their spirits.

In addition, the Staff Club also awarded prizes for the most outstanding department

bonding. This was judged by the most number of “Likes” received for the particular bonding activity photo uploaded on the Staff Club’s facebook page. The competition attracted a lot of interest and encouraged participation in the activity.

Congratulations to our Organisation Development Department for garnering The Most Number of “Likes”, and to JNE Logistics for The Most Outstanding & Creative Department Bonding.

s Spectre, the 24th installment to the James Bond series and Daniel Craig’s 4th reprisal of the role, was the choice movie of Teckwah’s Movie Night held in November. Organised by the Staff Club, the event was met with overwhelming response from staff who wanted to catch the blockbuster in the company of fellow colleagues.

“It was a fantastic evening where colleagues came together after a long day at the workplace. Everything was well organised. The only comment is that the movie was a bit too long which drained the energy out of us”, said Zhang Han from the Digital Solutions Team.

Planning your next vacation? Why not consider India! India, one of the fastest-growing economies of the world, is also the 2nd most populous with over 1.2 billion people residing on the subcontinent. The birthplace of Buddhism and Hinduism, India is also home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, the late Mahatma Gandhi, and of course, one of the New7Wonders of the world, the majestic Taj Mahal.

With a history that dates back to the Bronze Age (circa 3,300 B.C.), India is not only culturally and religiously diverse, the subcontinent is also rich in wildlife and geography, with its northern borders adorned by the Himalayan mountain range. From history and culture, to religion and nature, there is something for every visitor to India. Still having second thoughts? Our Staff Club Chairperson, Ms. Alexa Chua, might just change your mind. Having recently visited India for the first time, here is what she has to share:

It was an eye opening experience... on the way back (from visiting the Taj Mahal) we saw stray cows walking against the traffic which was quite interesting because we don’t normally see this in Singapore. People standing at the back of the truck as public transport. The food in Delhi was delicious - I loved the chapatti and naan with curry. People in Delhi were very welcoming and friendly. I would go back to India to explore other places if I have the chance.M

In Q2 issue of CaiXun, we featured an article on Teckwah’s printing operators in Singapore and Iskandar attended a month-long and specialised training programme which would equip them with the latest print knowledge and practical skills.

To ensure learning takes place and to encourage staff to apply what they have learnt, a productivity incentive was given out monthly since August, soon after the completion of the training. The scheme measures improvement in the overall equipment efficiency (OEE) of each printing machine in Singapore and Iskandar on a monthly basis. The incentive scheme is aimed at encouraging the operators to continuously seek improvement steps over time for higher level of machine performance.

Over the past few months, the two groups of operators in Singapore and Iskandar have consistently done well every month, and have all received recognition for their efforts.

The thought of attending a 6-day course at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort in Penang, soaking up the sun and dipping into the clear waters, would get anyone excited! However, this was not what two of our senior management staff, Chee Mun and Sherlin, experienced when they were nominated to attend the “Impact & Imprint” leadership course conducted by Capelle between 25 – 30 Oct.

The objective of this course was for the participants to understand and develop their leadership skills and effectiveness. This would enable them to (subsequently) assume leadership roles in the organisation, to make an impact by contributing to the corporate goals, and to create imprints on the lives of individuals in the organisation through conscious effort and personal authenticity.

The course began the very moment participants checked into the resort on Sunday evening, with daily programmes packed from 9am to 10pm. Unlike classroom lectures, this course had a mix of instructional learning, group projects, internal reflection and sharing. Each day, the coaching advisors presented leadership concepts, related experiences and actively discussed these topics with the class. Some of the concepts stretched the comfort zones of participants, encouraging them to share their perspectives and views. These

leadership concepts were further practised in mini-projects and internalised in evening application review sessions. Most participants in this course were senior and top managers from SMEs and MNCs. They brought with them different personal and work experiences which enriched the entire learning exercise.

The store has a selection of abalone for sale to walk-in customers, although the exclusively packaged ones for their retail clients cannot be sold at the shop. It is certainly worth a visit, to beat the crowds at supermarkets for your fix of these delicious mollusks.

FEAST LIKE A KING

CHINESE NEW YEARIN THE

FINDSNeighbourhood

It’s the time of year when we frantically try to ready ourselves for the Lunar New Year, while at the same time juggling our work, family and personal obligations. The good news is that right in our neighbourhood, within walking distance of Pixel Red, are little “gems” of shops where some of the obligatory Chinese New Year items can be found.

BIG Bakery is the “go to” place for your Chinese New Year nibbles. Located along Upper Paya Lebar Road, this traditional bakery, which has been in operation for more than 20 years, opens from 7 am till late, making it an ideal stop during the work week.

The traditional Chinese New Year cookies are hand made with signature offerings like pineapple tarts (both open-faced and pillow-shaped), egg rolls, almond sugee cookies (variant green-bean flavour available), daisy cookies, shrimp sambal rolls, cereal cookies, cashew nut cookies, white coffee biscuits, kueh bangkit and kueh baulu. There are also unique offerings like the black sesame flavoured bean curd skin cracker, seaweed cracker and almond pea cookie, which have proved to be popular with the lunch-time patrons. Our personal favourite among the myriad of offerings is the chicken floss spring roll which is crisp and lightly salted. Prices range from about $11 for a small tub of white coffee biscuits to $18 for the egg rolls. In case you are in two minds as to which treats to get, you can sample the fare. Or simply follow the recommendation of its legion of regular customers!

SWEET & SAVOURY TREATS

BIG Bakery

“Go Green(迈向绿色环保生活)”鼓励每个人把废纸扔到废纸回收箱里。

Saturday House
