March 6, 2020 Monmouth County Park System Manalapan Brook Pond Dredging and Dam Repair PROJECT INFORMATION PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Work on this project consists of maintenance dredging approximately 52,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Manalapan Brook Pond located at the Charleston Springs Golf Course. The dredging will be performed by hydraulic cutter head and material deposited in an upland confined disposal facility on the golf course. This project will also include all repairs and renovations necessary to restore the pond’s associated dam and drop box spillway adjacent to County Route 527 to good condition. REASON FOR PROJECT: The golf course was constructed in 1997 on lands that consisted of commercial nurseries. The pond on the property had never been dredged. Although the Park System has implemented several best management practices to reduce nutrient and sediment loading from entering the impoundment, shallow depths and the growth of nuisance algae/water lilies indicate that sedimentation and nutrient loading still impact the pond. Mitigation measures for this pond proposed under this project would focus on dredging of the pond to increase depth, reducing nutrient cycling and aquatic vegetation encroachment. The pond is currently choked with aquatic vegetation, removal of this vegetation and dredging will improve freshwater habitat allow recreational opportunities for fishing and boating. DESIGN APPROACH: Dredged material will be hydraulically removed and pumped approximately 1,550 feet to an upland confined disposal facility for dewatering. Once dewatered the dredged material will remain on-site and will be graded and shaped into a future golf course feature. During all construction phases of this project the golf courses will remain in full operation. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: As part of the design/construction process this project obtained and will be constructed in accordance with a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Flood Hazard Individual Permit; Freshwater Wetlands General Permits Nos. 1 & 13; Freehold Soil Conservation District Plan Certification and Stormwater Construction General Permit. PROJECT STATUS: The project was awarded to Precise Construction in October 2019. A large containment area with intake and discharge piping was first constructed; actual dredging began on March 5 2020 and is slated to be completed in the end of June 2020. Project is scheduled to be fully completed by October 2020. CONTACT INFORMATION: James Mowczan, Senior Civil Engineer Monmouth County Park System, Acquisition & Design Department [email protected]
