/ ART AGENDA “ What’s Next? “ Vier concepten, vier gastcuratoren, vier visionaire presenta-ties - en één museum waarin ze allemaal samenkomen. Ter gelegenheid van het tienjarig bestaan heeft Foam vier experts uit het culturele veld gevraagd hun visie te geven op de fototen-toonstelling van de toekomst. Dit heeft geleid tot vier uitgespro-ken, prikkelende presentaties die gelijktijdig in één gebouw te zien zijn. Met dit project kijkt Foam nadrukkelijk naar de eigen toekomst: hoe kan het museum een zo veelzijdig en gevarieerd medium goed tot haar recht laten komen.

“The Mirror Has Two Faces” Onder de titel ‘The Mirror has Two Faces’ presen-teert het Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem een Alice-in-Wonderlandachtige tentoonstelling over de modeontwerpers Truus en Riet Spijkers. Niet alleen weerspiegelt de tentoonstelling alle collecties die het duo Spijkers en Spijkers de afgelopen tien jaar heeft ontworpen, maar het toont ook wat je als fashionista normaal niet te zien krijgt: een kijkje achter de scher-men, een blik ín de hoofden van de ontwerpers, een rondgang langs hun ideeën, gedachten, grote voorbeelden en inspiratiebronnen. De spotlights staan op de vele gezichten van dit internationale modeduo, en de facetten die bij het proces van inspiratie, creatie en presentatie komen kijken. Deze blik achter de schermen is stijlvol, verrassend en als een betoverende belevenis vormgegeven door de stylisten en tentoon-stellingsvormgevers Maarten Spruyt en Tsur Reshef.

There is good reason for leaving us guessing about Banksy. Banksy’s work has been equated with vandalism on several occasions, and many have called for his prosecution. His choice of subject mat-ter coupled with his medium (typically spray paint on public walls) ruffles feathers no matter where he is (or who he is).Banksy’s talents aren’t limited to paint and the oc-casional pencil drawing. He has been responsible for a number of social commentaries involving replacing hundreds of Paris Hilton CDs with CDs of his own creation. He has sneaked his own work into several art museums, including a prehistoric-looking piece at the British Museum which the museum decided to add to their own permanent collection.Just as controversial as his methods is Banksy’s take on the art world at large. He has been known to deride other artists for their self-importance and “inferior” art forms. He has even taken on the people who buy his art. Following a 2006 Sotheby’s auction of several of his works, he produced an illustration of an auction on his official website featuring the words “I can’t believe you morons actually buy this shit.” He is a vocal opponent of the organized art world, though he now produces some work that is more conventional than his street art roots.Banksy’s work is applauded by many, but some critics say that it oversimplifies issues to appeal to the

In many of the world’s cities, the most noticeable and breathtaking pieces of art aren’t created by world-renowned talents. They are created by the unknown street artist under cover of darkness. We never see them and they are known only by their tagging pseudonyms.UK-based street artist Banksy is a notable half-ex-ception to this rule. His work is currently seen around the planet. There are few in the art world (street or otherwise) who don’t know his signature style. The exception, though, is that no one is sure just who he is. There have been many claims to know his true identity but none have ever been definitive to date.

Who is Banksy? We may not know his real name, but his art is unmistakably the work of a passionate individual. So what do we know about Banksy? His paintings, stencils, and other art pieces frequently address serious social issues. He takes on capital-ism, war, poverty, and governments with grace. His work often displays a keen sense of humor, making it equally possible that you will laugh or cast your eyes down thoughtfully upon seeing a Banksy piece.

And although the pseudonym and the signature style of the artist are well known, there’s not much else that we know for sure about Banksy. A few tidbits of information are widely accepted: he is from Bristol, UK, and got involved in graffiti art sometime in the early 90s. He began to gain widespread notoriety around 2003. He was born in or around 1974 and sports a silver tooth. He is, according to the few people who have met him as Banksy, an unassum-ing and typical-looking man.

Because street art is usually considered a crime, artists have to work quickly. One of the best ways to do that is to use custom stencils. You do most of the work ahead of time by creating the stencils, then when you get to the site of your future art, you simply hold the stencils up and spray away. This is the style of art that’s most often associated with Banksy. Some of them are simple and probably went up very quickly. Others are quite complex and involve several layers and many colors.

Never let it be said that the reclusive street art-ist doesn’t play well with others. In May of 2008, Banksy was involved with other street artists from around the world in The Cans Festival. The three-day art extravaganza saw artists flocking to an underpass

on Leake Street in London, armed with stencils and spray cans and a desire to cover every available surface with art. (And this time, they had permission.)Banksy’s talent and his message extend from urban art into the more

traditional paper-and-pencil territory, as well. Although it’s somewhat rare to find a Banksy drawing, the few available examples all convey his signature obser-vant-but-not-preachy style of subversion.The multi-talented artist has been keeping us entertained for a decade, but from a distance. Now that Banksy is gaining popularity all over the world, how will his art speak to his newly-formed fan base?

Through his talent and his dedication to art and his personal statements, Banksy has become perhaps the most famous anonymous artist ever. We still don’t know his true identity or where he will pop up next, but just mentioning his pseudonym brings a look of recognition to the faces of anyone who knows anything about art.Love him or hate him, Banksy is without a doubt one of the most influential artists working today. He has affected the art world from Australia to the US and nearly everywhere in between. Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a closer look at Banksy’s work, his influence, and the grand mystery surrounding everything he does. But there are many sides to this elusive culture-jamming artist, and his drawings, which are seen by far fewer people, are just as provocative as his large outdoor pieces. Some of his earliest works are still debated while others have become collectors items sold at up to six-figure prices. Even if Banksy hung up his spray paint cans and stencils forever today, he would always be known first and foremost as a graffiti artist. When he began as a lad in Bristol, his creative artwork graced the sides of buildings near his home. Now Banksy originals can be seen on walls all around the world.One of his most famous pieces was of a nude man hanging by one hand from a window as a jealous husband scans the street and a guilty wife stands by. Zoriah Miller, commonly known as Zoriah, is an award-winning photojournalist and war photographer whose work has been featured in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries, museums, and publications. Check out his website, blog, one-on-one photojournalism workshops, and Wikipedia article.PetaPixel: Can you tell us a little about yourself and your back-ground?Zoriah Miller: I began photography when I was 15 years old and within the first year of shooting I won a national award and was pretty into the idea of becoming a photojournalist. Three years later I was shooting abroad and had all of my equipment stolen…well, actually I had everything stolen and ended up having to spend some time in a homeless shelter until I could get money and documents to get out of the country…but that is another story. The point was that my camera and lenses were gone and I pretty much gave up. I graduated college, moved to New York, was in the music industry for six years, gave that up to go abroad and study disaster management and humanitarian aid to developing countries, hated that and then picked up a used camera and a plane ticket and have been shooting ever since then.PP: What does your name mean?ZM: My mother made up my name. She combined Zoe and Zachariah. Zoe is the Greek god of life and together the name means “one who loves life.”PP: What was your first camera?ZM: I am pretty sure it was a Nikon FG. I was shooting on an old thing my mother loaned me the first year, but when I won the award a local artist donated the Nikon to me with a bag of lenses. I used them for the next three years until they were stolen.PP: What equipment do you currently use?ZM: I am more than happy to answer this question, but I always start by saying that it really doesn’t matter that much. It is great to have nice equipment, and when you start making your living at this I do recommend it, but dont get hung up on it. If your pictures are not good, it is probably not the fault of the equipment. Everything I shot up until 2006 was done with a Canon 10D, and these shots blend right in on my sites and still sell just as well as the ones that were shot on nice, new gear.

That being said, I currently have a Canon 1DS MKIII and a 1DS MKII, 16-36 2.8, 50 1.2, 70-200 2.8. About 80% of my portfolio was shot with the 16-35 and I really only use the 70-200 in extreme situations (war, riots, disasters etc.) I primarily bought the 50 as a backup to my 16-35 and dont use it very often either.PP: What has been your most memorable moment so far as a photojournalist? Does any memory stand out from the rest?ZM: Such a hard question to answer, because so many moments have been so memorable, both in good and bad ways. The bad stuff gets etched into your head just as much as the good does. I think the most emotional project and the one that I learned the most from was my first year in Iraq. I learned a lot about people, about fear, pain, anger, kind-ness and of course life and death. Photojournalists are some of the very few people who have experienced war from a “neutral perspective,” meaning not experiencing it as either a combatant or victim. I think getting to know the soldiers as well as the civilians taught me a lot about human nature, both the ugliest of sides and the most beautiful. It was strange to discover that in a war zone, but for me, that was where it happened.PP: What advice do you have for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?ZM: I urge people to really consider what doing this kind of work will do to your life. It is not just a job or career, it can really change you. There are incredible things to see and experience and I truly believe that good photojournalism can change and enlighten people, but that often comes at a very high personal cost. You wont forget the things you see and you will find that very few can relate to your experiences. It hurts the people who love you to know that you are always in danger and it can definitely take its toll on your personal life. I think people really need to keep in touch with themselves if they chose this path, be sure you know why you are doing it and if you ever get to the point where you cant remember, do something else for a while.If it is right for you, then do it with all of your heart and all of your passions. Make beautiful art out of the horrors you see and produce work that people will not be able to turn away from. Anyone can take a photo, but producing a work of art, an image or a series of images that will affect people, enlighten them and bring about change is not something that is easy to do.PP: What kind of dangerous situations have you found yourself in?I think that a lot of the situations I have been in have been dangerous. I dont think you ever really know how close to death you are at any given point, there could have been dozens of mines I almost stepped on, dozens of roadside bombs the vehicle I was in almost triggered…who knows. There are only three situations I know of in which I missed death:One was in Iraq: I was scheduled to photograph a city council meeting in Anbar Province. Photographing meetings is not really my thing, so at the last minute I asked to be taken off the mission. I was told I could not be taken off the mission but I could go outside on the street with the security force and shoot on the streets instead of inside at the meeting. A suicide bomber struck the meeting and killed or severely injured nearly everyone attending.Another was in Gaza: I was going to shoot a story on the workers who smuggle items through tunnels from Egypt into Gaza. it is an extremely dangerous job and many workers die every month when the tunnels collapse. I had a camera crew filming a documentary about my work and we were slow getting everything organized in the morning to go to the tunnel and ended up running about an hour late. As we were driving to the tunnel we got news that it had collapsed.The other was in the West Bank: The Israeli Border Police had driven through a small village the week before and shot two young children in their faces, killing both of them. The town was outraged and attended a weekly protest of Israeli operations. The protests instantly became violent and I was on the front lines, not far from several other journalists when the Border Police opened fire on us using live ammunition. I could hear the bullets hissing and pinging as they went by my head and hit the trees and ground. I had one of those strange moments where you really under-react to something. I re-member thinking “I cant believe those jerks are shooting at me.” I slowly walked down the hill into a small valley and when I turned around I noticed that my friend had been shot in the chest. He nearly died but has made a full recovery.PP: If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?ZM: Nothing.PP: What are some mistakes you made early on that you’re careful to avoid now?

PP: What do you hope to achieve with your photographs?

ZM: A lot. I hope that my photographs make people think a bit about what it is like for others around the world. It is so easy to get caught up in our own lives, we forget that there are so many people struggling in some really terrible situations. I want to make photographs that hit people on an emotional level, punch them in their gut and make them feel something. If people can connect to those I photograph then they can empathize with them. This kind of understanding is the first step in changing the situations that effect these people.

In the long term I would hope to leave behind historical documents, photographs documenting lives, situations and struggles that may otherwise have vanished and been forgotten. I hope that at some point there will be fewer conflicts in this world, and if this happens I want my photos to remind people of the horrible things people go through in war.

Finally, I want my work to be art. I want to leave something behind that will inspire people to not only be creative but to also be kind to their fellow human beings, even the ones who live thousands of miles away that they may never meet.

PP: How much editing or manipulation would you say is too much in photojournalism?ZM: When I work with students during my workshops I tell them that this is something they need to decide for themselves. Some people will tell you a crop is unethical, others have no boundaries whatsoever. For me, adding things to or taking things out of a photo that are es-sential to the narrative and meaning of that photo is not acceptable. Artistic choices such as cropping, color and contrast adjustments, dodging and burning etc are all not only acceptable but encouraged. Photojournalism should be art! That is where it’s power comes from.PP: How much do you travel, and how long do you stay in the places you document?ZM: I have not had an apartment or home base in eight years and have been through about seventy countries in that time, some of them I have been to more than ten times each. I have had times in which I have been in seven countries in a week. Sometimes I will stay for a couple months in one spot, but my average time on a project is usually two or three weeks.

Op 29 augustus gaf Guido Crolla een lazing voor de nieuwe communicatie en multimediade-sign studenten.

Guido traptte af met het presenteren van zijn eigen brand, @Denkbeeldhouder, dit is de psuedoniem waaronder Guido Crolla op het internet bekend is. Zelf ken ik Guido al van vorig jaar en ken hem als een vooruitstrevende leraar die voor mij een voorbeeld is hoe je het goed doet in deze branche.

Guido ging verder over social media en hoe je door middel van social media je merk neerzet. En twitter, wat is twitter? Wat kan je met twitter? Hij gaf aan dat het belangrijk is dat je een twit-ternaam hebt die jouw representeert. Het moet een relevante naam zijn zodat men gelijk een idee heeft waar jij voor staat.Je zelf neerzetten als een brand, dat is wat Guido probeert uit te leggen.

Hiervoor heeft hij een livestream opgezet met Vera Camilla, een Nederlandse blogster die zich bezig houdt met fashion en beautyproducten met een trouwe aanhang op het internet. Ze heeft per maand rond de 10 000 unieke be-zoekers op haar blog en heeft op twitter meer dan 5000 volgers. En heeft onder andere een-Spinaward gewonnen. Een perfect voorbeeld waar social media toe kan leiden.Maar dit komt niet uit het niets, Vera Camilla houdt zich al veel langer bezig met bloggen en heeft hard moeten werken om te komen waar ze nu is.

Helaas was de verbinding via Skype niet denderend en moest de verbinding voortijdig worden afgebroken. Al met al heeft de zaal toch een goed idee gekregen wat je kan bereiken met social media.Hierop liet Guido on seen info-graphic zien waar social media statistieken werden uitgelicht en zo een idee te krijgen hoe groot het social media tegenwoordig is.Guido Crolla ken ik al van vorig jaar voor mij is Guido synoniem aan : creator, innovator een person die zich probeert los te rukken van de vastgeroeste leer en studiemethoden.

Ruud de Boer, auteur van het boek “Brand Design” en “Als ik een merk zou zijn” gaf een presentatie over merkidentiteit.In dit boek wordt uiteengezet hoef men een merk op de beste manier in de markt zet. Wat is Brand Design? Waarom moet je dat doen?Ruud de Boer is werkzaam bij Bataafsche Teeken Maatschappij en heeft o.a de volgende bedrijven op zijn CV ; Fair Trade, Hema, Trekpleister.

Volgens Ruud de Boer is het belangrijkste dat je per doelgroep een sterk merkvoorkeur ontwikkelt. Dat is het zorgen dat mensen bij een bepaald product gelijk aan een merk denken. Hiervoor gebruikt hij het Brand Design model. Aspecten van dit model zijn ; Merkinnerlijk, merkuiterlijk en merkgedrag,Grote merken zoals Apple, Red Bull hebben een heel sterk “Brand Design”. Als men aan Red Bull denkt heeft men gelijk een beeld en weet exact waar het over gaat. Dit is beter bekend als Brand Activation, je merk actief neerzetten door middel van promotie en de herkenbaarheid van het merk bij de doelgroep.Ook heeft de Boer het gehad over personal brand-ing, waar wij in deze course mee te maken gaan kri-jgen. Hoe zet je jezelf zo goed mogelijk in de markt? Om dit te weten te komen moet je eerst jezelf beter leren kennen voordat je jezelf gaat branden.

Mono Media is mijn brand, mijn ondernieming. Mono Media biedt verschillende diensten aan op het gebied van vormeving en webdevelop-ment waarbij het idee “minplicity’”, een combinatie van minimalistic en simplicity de kernwaarden zijn. Mono Media gelooft in dat simpel maar doordacht design net zo goede resultaten kunnen behalen. Mono Media biedt de klanten vertrouwen, duurzaamheid en contact. Het gebruiken van een community zal de communicatie en ontwikkeling bevorden die rechtstreekt de klant ten goede komen. Het gebruik van minimalistische en simpele design is ons kenmerk. Mono Media werkt vanuit Arnhem en via de website of telefoon is contact op te nemen voor een persoonlijk gesprek onder een kopje koffi!e! Het logo bestaat uit 3 kleuren die toch een goed contrast bieden tussen de twee vlakken. Het font dat ik heb gebruikt is Helvetica Neue, Ultra Light. Dit past bij de uitstraling van mijn brand, het is strak en oogt minimaal. Visitekaartje is het logo aan de voorkant met de de diensten die aangeboden worden en op de achterkant staan de alle social media waar Mono Media op actief is en n.a.w. gegevens. Briefpapier heeft dezelfde kleur grijs als het logo alleen met een trasparantie waardoor de letters nog leesbaar zij en linksboven het logo en contact gegevens.

De Allen & Heath Xone:DB4, is wel een van de meest uitgebreide mengpanelen van deze tijd. Hij heeft enorm veel functies, denk hierbij aan een 3-bands EQ en 3-bands filter, een effecten processor per kanaal, een ingebouwde geluid-skaart, etc. Kortom dit is echt een mengpaneel van’ the next level’. Reken hier nog eens bij dat je een aparte draagzak erbij krijgt, dan heb je dus al een vermoeden dat dit niet zomaar een mengpaneel is.

Eredivisie De Allen and Heath Xone DB4 wordt dus geleverd met een draagzak met dezelfde kwaliteit als van UDG bijvoorbeeld. Hierbij heb je genoeg plaats voor het mengpaneel, samen met je koptelefoon, laptop (tot 17 inch), kabels en eventueel nog een geluidskaart. De padding is dik genoeg om te beschermen en natuurlijk ook het mengpaneel zelf. Verder met het eigenlijk apparaat. De Xone:DB4 is een mengpaneel uit de high end klasse, een top speler uit de Eredivisie zeg maar. Dit merk je niet alleen aan het prijskaartje maar ook gewoon aan de feeling. Dit mengpaneel is gemaakt om een groot aantal jaren mee te gaan, mits je het ook goed behandeld. Hou dit in je achterhoofd want elk apparaat gaat zolang mee, zolang je het niet mishandelt! Stof, drank, sigaretten is ‘killing‘ voor mengpanelen. Qua uiterlijk is de DB4 geen DJM 800 kopie, dit zien we alleen al aan de typische kleur van de VU meters. In plaats van de gewoonlijke groen, wit, rode ledjes, gebruikt Allen & Heath zachtere kleuren namelijk geel en blauw.

De filters zijn net zoals we ze kennen van Allen & Heath, in één woord ZALIG! Je hebt keuze per kanaal (zoals hierboven beschreven) uit een low, mid en high-pass filter. Verder heb je ook nog 2 aparte filters die je per kanaal kan instellen.Enorm handig is ook dat je buiten de 4 kanalen, je ook nog een extra line-in krijgt om je microfoon op aan te sluiten. Hierbij kun je deze ook op kanaal 1 plaatsen. Hierdoor kun je ook nog effecten over je microfoon of extra line-in plaatden. Jammer genoeg heeft deze standaard maar een 2-bands EQ.

Wat is er zo speciaal aan de Xone:DB4? Nou dat is de effecten sectie. Per kanaal heb je een aparte effecten processor tot je beschikking, die je alle 4 tegelijkertijd kunt activeren. Helaas kun je per kanaal maar één effect selec-teren. Maar een effect in combinatie met een filter en een loop kan soms extreem mooie resultaten opleveren. Buiten de normale effecten zoals Delay, Reverb, Modulator, Resonator en Damage heb je nog een bibliotheek aan overige effecten vol staan. Het enige minpunt dat ik heb ontdekt hierbij, is dat je bij het switchen van effect even een drop-out krijgt. Jammer maar natuurlijk niet elk apparaat kan enkel goede dingen hebben.

AudioVerder heeft de Xone:DB4 een studiokwaliteits geluidskaart. Jammer genoeg is deze niet Traktor Scratch compatible. Dit mocht misschien wel voor die prijs. Natuurlijk kun je hem wel gebruiken in combinatie met het midi-gedeelte van de Xone:DB4 via Traktor 2, hierdoor heb je nog meer mogelijkheden maar valt, helaas, de effecten processor weer buiten beeld. De inputs op de DB4 zijn echter in één woord geweldig. Je krijgt namelijk vier analoge inputs via RCA (waarvan twee switchable naar phono/line), vier digitale inputs met USB toegang tot de vier stereo inputs die beschikbaar zijn via de 24 bits, 96 kHz geluidskaart. In totaal krijg je dus maar liefst twaalf inputs!

MidiaLaten we niet vergeten dat de DB4 ook ee functie heeft! Wanneer je op de ‘midi shift mode’ knop drukt wordt een deel van de DB4 (o.a. fx select knop-pen) een midi controller, die je dan vrij kan mappen in je favoriete DJ software.

Afhankelijk van je mapping kan je dan bijvoorbeeld heel makkelijk je decks controllen in Traktor, browsen en tracks selecteren. Door het gebruik van ver-schillende ‘pages’ kan je meerdere functies onder één knop zetten en zo nog meer functionaliteit mappen. Tijdens het gebruik van midi kan je makkelijk ook de functies van de mixer bedienen door middel van de ‘midi shift mode’ knop.

OordeelDe Allen & Heath Xone:DB4 is een geweldig apparaat. Echter aan deze ‘geweldigheid’ hangt wel een vergelijkbaar, groot kostenplaatje vast. Voor de prijs krijg je wel enorm veel voor terug. De beste filters die je kunt vinden op een mengpaneel samen met de 3-bands EQ waar killen ook doodstil is. Jam-mer genoeg heeft Allen & Heath hiervoor geen kill switch op de mixer staan. De rotaries die zacht in je handen aanvoelen samen met geweldige kwaliteits faders.

Dit mengpaneel is gewoon TOP! Hou wel rekening met uitval van de muziek bij het switchen van een effect, want dit kan anders voor een grappig, maar toch beschamend moment zorgen tijdens het draaien.

Zoals ik het zelf graag zie, hebben ze deze per kanaal gep-laatst en nogmaals bij de master out. Volledig overzicht dus over het volume van je geluid. Mooi!

Effecten en FunctiesDe mogelijkheden per kanaal zijn ook eindeloos. Per kanaal heb je de reeds vermelde VU meter, een 3-bands EQ die je met het switchen van een knop ook kunt omzetten naar een 3-band filter en ook naar ISO.Verder zie je ook nog een 5-tal knoppen om het gewenst effect te activeren, de dry en wet rotary en het volume voor de effecten, maar hierover later meer. Enorm handig is ook dat je per kanaal je geluidsbron kan instellen. Een soort matrix instelling. Verder heb je een switch tussen digitaal, analoog en USB. Erg handig is ook dat je een soort instant loop hebt per kanaal. Hiermee kun je een stutter maken, hetzelfde als de roll fx bij de Pioneer DJM-800. Verder heb je ook nog een switch om de andere 3-bands EQ te selecteren en de X-Y voor de crossfader.
