600ft), soils featuring the typical “tufo verde,” or green tufa ‐ a siliceous, calcareous and friable rock formed by ancientvolcanic eruptions full of potassium and phosphorus‐ covered with a top layer of clay sediment, and the constant presence ofsea breezes and sunshine all contribute to grapes with great potential.

Two indigenous varieties typical of Ischia are grown, Forastera and Biancolella, along with Fiano, native to the entire regionof Campania. The wines truly respect the Ischia terroir, long recognized for its excellent white grape varieties. That said, thereds are surprisingly enticing. Indigenous to the island is Piedirosso, which is grown along with Aglianico and Montepulcianod’Abruzzo. According to Antonio Monti, those varieties were grown on Ischia well before the Roman Empire. In fact, theAncient Greeks called this island Pithecusa, which is recalled by the name of two of the estate’s wines called Pithecusa, onered (a blend of aglianico, piedirosso and montepuciano d’Abruzzo) and one white (a blend of fiano and biancolella). Theestate also bottles a 100% Biancolella and a typical local blend of forastera and biancolella called Terradei. All reds are agedin oak tonneaux and barriques whereas the whites are aged exclusively in stainless steel to preserve their fresh fruit flavors.

The Roger family comes from a long line of winegrowers from the village of Bué. The first texts that mention the family namedate back to the early 17th century. Jean-Max Roger took over the four hectares of vines left to him by his parents in theearly 1970s and expanded the estate to its current size, 26 hectares. Beginning in 2004, two of his three sons, Etienne andThibault, came back to work at the estate after various professional experiences in France and abroad. Today, the estatecovers a surface area of 26 hectares in the Sancerre AOC, along the Loire River. It also includes 5 hectares of vines located inthe Menetou-Salon AOC area of production where the first plantations date back to 1981. They produce white wines madefrom Sauvignon Blanc as well as reds and rosés made from Pinot Noir. They also sell Pouilly-Fumé, a neighbouring appellationlocated opposite Sancerre on the left bank of the Loire.

Graci, situated on the north slope of Mount Etna at Passopisciaro, is found in an area where viticulture dates back severalthousand years. Their vineyards sit at an altitude between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Planting density rangesfrom 6,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Many of the vines are still on original rootstock, ungrafted, having never beenaffected by the phylloxera scourge thanks to the unique nature of the volcanic soils.

At Graci, young Alberto Aiello Graci remains steadfast in his respect for local traditions as well as the distinct nature of eachvintage and only cultivates traditional varieties indigenous to Mount Etna: the red grapes Nerello Mascalese and NerelloCappuccio, and white grapes Carricante and Catarratto. Intervention of any kind is extremely limited, both in the vineyardand in the cellar. They do not use herbicides in order to preserve the unique balance and vital energy of the soil. They do notuse barriques, but only the big, upright, wooden casks known as tini and large, well-used wood barrels. Their sole objectiveis to reflect the personalities of their vineyards and the sublime differences between each and every harvest.

As for the volcano itself, Mr. Graci, for one, barely gives it a second thought. “Lava? We are fatalists,” he said. “We don’tcare. It’s normal for us.”

The vineyard is 1,000 meters high, or about 3,300 feet, the upward limit at which Nerello can ripen. Interspersed are oliveand apple trees and birds, bees and bugs that fill the air with industrious chirps and hums.

“This is a place where it’s possible to have a balance between elegance and rusticity,” Mr. Graci said. “This sensation is hardto find anywhere else.”

“A very rare estate in Italy that devotes itself completely to just one grape, Verdicchio. [The Sartarelli family] have raisedVerdicchio wine making to an art form, and nobody produces as many successful wines from the grape as they do. TralivioVerdicchio [is now] one of the best Verdicchio wines made anywhere.” – Ian D’Agata, VinousMedia.com (Jul 2015)

Located in the heart of the Marche on the west side of the Esino river, Sartarelli encompasses 66 hectares of vines located300-350 feet above sea level. With an average vine age of 33 years and soils that are characterized by calcareous and marlstone, owners Donatella Sartarelli and her husband Patrizio Chiacchiarini are producing wines that are very terrior-driven andclassic to the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC. Donatella and Patrizio firmly believe that the wine is made in the vineyard –to this end, they practice sustainable farming, only using pesticides when absolutely necessary and allowing grasses to growin order to replenish nutrients into the soil. During harvest, they make multiple passes through the vineyards, taking only thefruit that is at its optimal ripeness. All of the grapes are soft pressed, with fermentation for the Classico and Tralivio beingdone in stainless steel and the Balciana and Passito in cement. No oak is used at all, allowing for the purity of the fruit tocome through. The end result are artisan wines that are clean, soft, and layered with complexity.

The viticultural story of the Tessari family begins in the early 1900s. The estate has been called Ca’Rugate since 1986, takingits name from the volcanic hills on which the vineyard are found. The Ca’Rugate vineyards cover 58 hectares, 35 of whichare located within the commune of Montecchia di Crosara in Valpolicella.

Due to the unique sunny microclimate and rich volcanic soil, these gentle sloping hills have always been a cradle for highquality wines. Ca’ Rugate uses only indigenous grape varieties such as Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave for white wines, and Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone for reds. In the vineyard, they use modern pruning techniques along with carefulcanopy management and green pruning, while the latest vinification techniques bring out distinctive aromas and refinedflavors in the wines. With the natural potential from the vineyards, three generations of the Tessari family have combinedtheir respect for the soil and tradition with a passion for winemaking. At Ca’ Rugate, the winemaking philosophy is to remaintrue to the varietal character of the grapesRich golden color, with a fine aroma of exotic fruits. Full and rich in flavor, this is astructured wine which will reach its peak after 1-2 years in bottle.Blend: 100% GarganegaAlcohol: 12.5%Bottle Size: 750 Sub-Appellation: Monteforte d'Alpone, Montefiorentine VineyardSoil: VolcanicBottles Produced: 50,000Harvested: Mid OctoberFermentation Vessel: Stainless SteelVinification Method: Temperature controlled fermentation for 10-15 days

The new cellar under construction seems to have not distracted the very young kellermeister Harald Schraffl. The CantinaNals Margreid has by now established itself among the Olympus of Alto Adige winemaking. Wines, above all whites, evermore representative of the territory, ever more stylistically defined and technically impeccable, are the result of severeselection in the vineyards. The Pinot Bianco Sirmian, the Sauvignon Mantele and the Pinot Grigio Punggl are the pearls of thewhites, which are flanked by the reds of the Baron Salvadori line and the Schiava Galea, must-haves for the appellation.”Gambero Rosso Guida Vini d’Italia 2011.

The vineyards of Nals Margreid are positioned between 200 and 900 meters above sea level, stretching from Nalles in thenorth to Magrè in the south. These locations benefit from both the climactic-barrier protection of the Alps to the North, andthe warmth of the Mediterranean influences from the South. Soils are made up of gravel subsoil on the slopes of themountains, and alluvial soil on the valley floor. Fold in primitive rock such as granite, slate, limestone, gneiss and porphyryand you’ve got ideal conditions for the growing of premium grapes, and ultimately the production of world-class wines.

The growers of Nals Margreid use natural methods wherever possible. Parasites and diseases are avoided through ecologicalmeans. Vines are trained using the classic pergola trellis, or by using the more modern, lower-yielding Guyot method.

Winemaker Harald Schraffl oversees the seamless blending of the fruits of a wide variety of vineyards, soils, vines andmicroclimates in their small winery. Schraffl’s vinification philosophy is dominated by the importance of preserving thecharacteristics that the soils and grape varieties impart to the wines. In addition to the blends, Nals Margreid bottles ahandful of vineyard-designate wines from tiny, yet exceptional parcels. Earnest and genuine, these wines reflect thecharacter and attributes of the various Alto Adige sub-zones. This is the first time Nals Margreid wines have been importedinto the US.

Located on a hillside overlooking the village of Pouilly, Domaine du Chalet Pouilly has been family owned and operated since1850, passing down expertise and passion from one generation to another. The 8.5 hectares are shared between PouillyFuissé (5 hectares), Saint-Véran (3 hectares) and Mâcon-Solutré planted in 2009 (0.5 hectares). The estate practicessustainable wine-growing methods and some plots are grown according to the organic standards.Today, Chalet Pouilly is run by Marie-Eve Léger, who joined the domain in 2009 after completing her degree, and her parentsAgnès and Bernard. They practice traditional wine-growing methods, respecting the terroir, and their philosophy is to allownature to express itself through the vinification process in order to create rich-flavored wines with a rustic touch. Their vinesare old, and their soil rich and calcareous.

“Domaine du Chalet Pouilly is a small grower, but small can be beautiful. Father and daughter team of Bernard and Marie-Eve Leger are in charge here, the winery itself founded way back in 1850 on top of the hill overlooking the village of Solutre-Pouilly. In case you were wondering, it is named after the slatted facade of the winery that lends it the appearance of achalet. Theirs is a small portfolio of wines, though Marie-Eve told me that it will be joined by a 0.4-hectare plot of Macon-Solutre from 2012. The wines are generally aged in used demi-muids except the St. Veran that sees no oak contact. I mustconfess, being unfamiliar with this name I had no expectations, but I adored these succinctly crafted, mineral-driven winesthat you just want to elope with.”– Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate #208, August 2013

Today Régine and Jean own 4 hectares of vines around Mâcon, on the vintages of Viré-Clessé, Mâcon-Lugny, Mâcon-Montbellet and Saint-Véran, as well as 5 hectares in the Jura region, on the vintages of Arbois and Côtes de Jura. Located ineastern France between Burgundy and Switzerland, The Jura region gets its moniker from the Jurassic geological period, evident in the soil. In the lowlands, the vineyards are composed mostly of clay, with more limestone in the higher elevations, which can exceed 1300 feet. Also, marl is scattered throughout the best vineyards. This steep, mountainous area is home tomany ancient, indigenous varietals including Poulsard, Trousseau, and Savagnin, as well as Chardonnay. Cuttings ofChardonnay and Pinot Noir were brought from Burgundy in the middle ages. Melon d’Arbois is the local name forChardonnay, Arbois being a principal city in the region. Chardonnay now accounts for nearly 45% of production as itstendency toward early ripening and naturally higher sugar levels are desired.Although this continental climate is quite similar to Burgundy, Jura gets much colder, causing concern for full ripeness of thegrapes. Often harvests are delayed until late October in effort to achieve the highest levels of ripeness.Jean Rijckaert’s goal is to employ minimum mechanical techniques, instead focusing on a return to manual work. The soil isplowed, thus, allowing the vines to search for nourishment deep into the earth. This adds character and complexity whileexpressing the terroir of the region. The harvests are done manually with little intervention in the winemaking process, including the use of natural yeasts. Jean prefers to make wine that can be enjoyed with food and good company as opposedto garnering the best scores.

Spencer Hoopes planted his eight-acre vineyard in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley in 1989, when most vineyards inCalifornia were being torn out because of phylloxera. He was able to do this because the vines for the all-CabernetSauvignon site were planted on fertile sedimentary volcanic soils to St. George rootstock. Ninety percent of the originalvineyard, against a hill north of Yountville in the central part of Napa Valley, remains.

When Spencer encouraged his daughter Lindsay, who grew up walking the vineyards alongside her father, to take over fullmanagement of the winery, she accepted. They now work together, sharing that vision of great Cabernet Sauvignon fromthe Napa Valley. Lindsay is one of the youngest winery General Managers in Napa and one of a very small number of womenwho run wineries in the Napa Valley. She works alongside two woman winemakers: Anne Vawter and Jennifer Rue, in craftingthe Hoopes and Liparita wines.

That’s Spencer’s beloved terrier Dante gracing the label. Dante shared in his master’s love of wine, and was a huge helparound the vineyard. Since the first vintage, he has been jumping through the hoop of an old barrel as the focal point of thebrand. “We like to think of him still leaping today,” says Lindsay, “somewhere in an even happier place.”

In 1992, Peirano Estate Vineyards began bottling and selling wine using their estate grown grapes. Until this point, LanceRandolph, fourth generation Peirano, produced wine simply for his enjoyment and that of his close family and friends. Therest of the grapes were sold to winemakers across the country. It was well-known amongst Lance’s family and friends that hehad a knack for making well-balanced, elegant wines but was not interested in selling it to the masses. At their insistence,Lance began bottling and selling his wine to wine enthusiasts throughout the United States. In 1997, several city andcommission representatives saw the potential for developing tourism for wine in Lodi and approached Lance about openinga tasting room on the vineyard estate. They felt his rich family history, which dates back to the late 1800’s in Lodi, was avery compelling story which visitors would enjoy hearing. After several months of late night planning sessions and dozens ofmeetings with city and county planning commissions, Peirano Estate Vineyards revamped the old house the Peirano’s hadbuilt in the early 1900’s and turned it into one of the first tasting rooms in Lodi.

Montefresco wines reflect their philosophy, that good wines demonstrate purity of fruit, clean flavors and the characteristicsof the land from which they come. The Botter family in the Veneto does just that. The family has not only been making theirown wines but they have been wine merchants themselves for four decades.

Area of Production: Veneto region, Conegliano areaVinification: The must is divided from the skins at once and then passed into a steel tank where it completes its fermentationfor 8-10 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C.Afterwards the wine is stored in a special tank with the addition of must which has the same alcohol content. The wine is leftfor additional fermentation until it achieves the desired over-pressure (5 atmospheres). With a name inspired by the old Italian expression meaning “House of Charm,” Casa di Malia pays tribute to the magic ofTreviso, one of the storied towns in the Province of Venice in the heart of the Prosecco appellation. The grapes for Casa diMalia all come from Tenuta Divici, a collection of family-owned vineyards, all of which are certified organic. The estate’scommitment to true Italian Prosecco and honest, unfettered viticulture shines through in their wines: elegant, expressive, and, above all, charming.

Champagne Charles Ellner, in the heart of Epernay, was and is a family business. At the end of the 19th century, CharlesEmile Ellner, the founder of the House, began acquiring small vineyards in Epernay while also starting his career as aprofessional “riddler”. In 1905, he first released Champagne under his own name. His son Pierre and his 4 grandsonsdeveloped the business, and in 1972 the company became “Negociant Manipulant”.

Today the house is run by Jean-Pierre Ellner, one of the grandsons of the estate’s founder. His nephews Frederic and ArnaudEllner manage vineyards and production. His daughters Emmanuelle Foulon Ellner and Alexandra Ellner also work at theestate.

The House of Ellner possesses about 50 hectares of vineyards, located across more than 15 villages in the Champagneregion. The Ellner vineyards produce about 50% of the total grape crop.None of Charles Ellner’s wines see malolactic fermentation. All are fermented in stainless-steel tanks to preserve fresh fruitflavors (only the Chardonnay blended into the vintage wines spends a few months in giant oak barrels between primaryfermentation and bottling). They are then left to sit on their lees for a minimum of 4 years (the law is only 18 months) toallow the wines to soften a bit, fill out, and become beautifully drinkable upon release yet ageable at the same time.

The painting which inspired Charles Ellner’s iconic labels has been damaged and the identity of the artist has been lost. In1986, the estate decided to include the painting on their labels. In 2012, Champagne Charles Ellner gave a more moderntouch to their labels, focusing on one of the women in the painting.

While winemaking in this place can be traced back to Roman times, most consider the “official” founding of the estate as weknow it to be 1335. This is when the Elector of Trier gave the vineyards to Carthusians monks, thus the name of the estate,Karthäuserhof, meaning farm of the Carthusians. The tiny Ruwer Valley is a magical place; it is one of the smallestwinemaking regions in Germany with around 200ha under vine. Compare this to the Mosel which has, in total, around10,000ha, or, for fun, Chateau Lafite is alone over 100ha in size. The 19ha vineyard now known as “Karthäuserhofberg”,while full of unique slopes and expositions, is predominantly composed of iron-rich, oxidized blue and gray slate. In fact,Eitelsbach, the name of the surrounding village, is derived from the German word “Eisen,” meaning iron. While the estate iswell know for their Prädikat wines, uniquely, Karthäuserhof is equally as famous for its dry Rieslings – today, nearly 70% of

the estate’s production is dry.Jean Fisch and David Rayer of the Mosel Fine Wines are doing really great work. For seriousRiesling geeks, they are recommended. I'll just quote their review b/c they are spot on (aside from the "tar" thing - I don'tknow where that comes from). This is one of the treasures of the vintage. Intensity and delicacy. "This has show-stoppingnose of pure spices, mint, gooseberry, tar and white peach. A lovely intense fruity and floral side comes through on thepalate yet the wine retains a fresh, mouth-watering feel of lightness. The firm acidity and modest levels of residual sugar(which are, by the way, far lower than those seen in most Kabinetts on the Mosel) make this an irresistible and perfectlybalanced experience. This is a truly superb Kabinett with plenty of life ahead."
