Kennedy High School, and now Winston Churchill High School. She joined the Bridge program at Churchill in October 2019. Born and raised in Yaounde, Cameroon, in West Africa, Ms. Haaland immigrated to the United States, and earned a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from Strayer University. She later earned a Masters of Science in Information Tech- nology from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Before she came to MCPS, Ms. Haaland worked as a project manager for several companies, including IBM and Lockheed Martin, providing leadership on Federal IT contracts. Ms. Haaland is married to Paul, and has two sons, Dylan (17) and Dyson (14), who both attend the Williston North- ampton School in Easthampton, MA. She has been an active volunteer, especially for her sonsschools in MCPS, serving as PTSA president at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Ms. Haaland is very happy to be at Churchill, and enjoys helping her students succeed each and every day. She is also thankful for the warm reception she has received from everyone at the school. You can pay the remaining balance in the Online School Payment system. Please email [email protected] with any questions. WIDA ACCESS Testing: J anuar y 22-23 (*last two days of Semester 1*). ESOL students will be taking the WIDA AC- CESS Test on January 22-23. This is a very important test for our students – it includes assessments in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. We kindly ask for new elementary age books to be dropped off in our main office. Thank you! Staff Spotlight—Ms. Betty Haaland Ms. Betty Haaland has been with MCPS for three years, serving as a paraeducator at various schools, including Silver Spring Inter-national Middle School, John F. WCHS Department Updates

Attendance update: We have been able to reinstate our calls home for attendance discrepancies. You can access information regarding your child’s attendance on the parent portal (Go to MCPS website, Select Parents tab at top, Click on the MYMCPS PARENT PORTAL button, Login, Select Attendance from the left hand menu bar.) After reviewing if you feel there is a discrepancy, please contact your child’s teacher. If the attendance report was in error, your child’s teacher will contact the attendance secretary to change the record. if there is a discrepan-cy when your child has been marked absent for the entire day, contact the attendance secretary.

Math: The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) will be held in the auditor ium on January 30 th during periods 6-8. There is limited space available. To register, please contact Mrs. Phillips in the Math Office or email [email protected].
