Healthwatch Lancashire is committed to listening to patients and members of the public in Lancashire and making sure their views and experiences are heard by those who run, plan and regulate health and social care services. This is achieved through a core programme of work, our day to day activity of visiting health and social care services and speaking to service users. DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITY PATIENT ENGAGEMENT DAY EVENTS IN GP SETTINGS Lead: Amanda Higgins The focus of this phase of Patient Engagement Days in GP surgeries is to gather patients’ views on the accessibility of their GP surgery, the quality of care provided and the awareness of patient involvement via Patient Participation Groups. In December, the following activities were carried out: DATE(S) PROVIDER(S) 02/12/2016 Slaidburn Country Practice, Slaidburn, Clitheroe, PATIENT ENGAGEMENT DAY EVENTS IN HOSPITAL SETTINGS Lead: Amanda Higgins The focus of this phase of Patient Engagement Days in hospital A&E departments is to scrutinise winter pressures and gather patients’ views on the quality of care provided and issues faced. ThreePopupengagementactivitiestookplaceduringDecember,whichincludedspeakingtoresidentsin:

• KnottEndontheWyreIBus• AttheMedequibpromotionevent• Youngpeople’sadviceandguidancedropinatZoneIninKirkham.

MYSTERYSHOPPING–ACCESSTOHOSPITALSFORTHEVISUALLYIMPAIREDLead:AyshaDesaiWorkcommencedonourmysteryshoppingprojectwhichfocusesonaccesstohospitalsforthevisuallyimpaired.ThefirstvisittookplaceinDecemberwithmoreplannedthroughoutJanuary2017beforeafullreportiscompiledofallthevisitsandsharedwithproviders.

HEALTHWATCHWORKINGINPARTNERSHIPLead:JessWoodDuringDecember,sixpartnershipactivitieswerecompleted.Theseincluded:

• SouthportandOrmskirkNursingAccreditationScheme(SONAS)assessment.Thesearedesignedtosupportthetrusttounderstandhowtheydelivercare,identifywhatworkswellandwherefurtherimprovementsareneeded,Ourroleattheseeventsistogatherinformationfrompatientsreceivingcareatthehospital.

• Three‘OurHealthOurCare’events:PrestonGujaratCentre,ChorleyTownHallandtheLeylandCivicCentre.Thesepublicengagementeventsaimtocapturetheviewsoflocalpeopleandgivethemtheopportunitytogetinvolvedindesigningahealthandsocialcaresystemthatwillmeettheneedsofeveryoneinthecommunity.HealthwatchLancashirevolunteersattendtheseeventsasparticipantsbutalsotoprovidealaypersonperspectiveofhowaccessibleandpersoncentredtheeventsaredelivered.

• TwoLancashireSafeguardingAdultBoard(LSAB)meetings:OurChiefExecutivehasaplaceontheboardandalsoparticipateswithinanumberofsubgroupsoftheBoard.ThismonthshewasinattendanceattheMentalCapacityActimpactgroupandQualityandPerformanceMonitoringsubgroup.TheLSABexiststoensurethatallagenciesworktogethertominimisetheriskofabusetovulnerableadultsandtoprotectthosesubjecttoabuse.

ImmunisationandScreeningProject:WeareworkingwithHealthwatchBlackburnwithDarwen,HealthwatchBlackpoolandNHSEnglandtodeliveraprogrammeofengagementaroundscreeningandimmunisation.Thesewillfocusontargetgroupswithinprisonservicesandtravellercommunitiesforfluvaccinationsandcervicalcancerscreening.PartofthisworkhasincludedourCervicalCancerSurvey,wherewehavegatheredtheviewsandexperiencesfrompeopleinLancashireabouttheirexperienceofcervicalcancerscreeningservices.ThefeedbackwillbeusedtodraftareportinJanuarywithitexpectedtobepublishedattheendofthemonth.Changestopoliciesforprescriptions:AnumberofClinicalCommissioningGroupsinLancashirearechangingtheirpoliciesregardingprescribingmedicationssuchasprescribingofgluten-freefoods.HealthwatchLancashireislookingtocaptureviewsfrompeoplewhoareaffectedbythesechanges.HealthwatchLancashirehasdiscussedthesepolicychangeswithCoeliacUKandwillbelookingtocaptureexperiencesfromthosewhonolongerreceiveprescriptionstounderstandtheirexperiences.Moreinformationisonourwebsitehere:http://healthwatchlancashire.co.uk/policy-changes/

Itisimportantthatwhenprovidershearabouttheexperiencesfromserviceusers,thattheyacknowledgeandrespondtothem.BelowisinformationprovidedtoHealthwatchLancashireregardingthechangesthathavebeenmadeasaresultoffeedbackfromserviceusers.Thisisasampleofsomeofourmostrecentresponses.RossendaleValleyMedicalPractice,HaslingdenWhatthepatientssaid:Theywereunawareofonlineservices.Whattheproviderdid:Surgerytoadvertiseonlineservicesonnoticeboardandadvisenewpatientsonthissystemwhentheyregister.TheElmsPractice,OrmskirkWhatthepatientssaid:Theystruggledtogeturgentappointments.Whattheproviderdid:Thesurgeryhasimplementedanurseclinicianleadwalkincliniceverymorningbetween8:30amand10am.BlackpoolTeachingHospitals,BlackpoolWhatthepatientssaid:62%ofpatientssurveysaidtheydidnotgetareminderabouttheirappointment.Whattheproviderdid:Thetrustexplainedthattherehadbeensometechnicalissueswiththetelephoneappointmentremindersystem.Thisservicehasnowbeenrestoredandextendedtopreviouslyexcludedclinicsandthescriptsusedhavebeenrevisedinlinewithdepartmentofhealthguidance.

• Wearecontinuingourmysteryshoppingvisitstoavarietyofserviceslookingataccessibilitywithawiderrangeofdisabilitygroups.

• WeareworkingwithMacmillanCancerSupport,HealthwatchBlackburnwithDarwenandHealthwatchBlackpooltoproduceareporttopresentthecollaborativeengagementactivitiescarriedoutinearly2016withseldomheardgroups.

• WeareworkingwiththeHealthierLancashireandSouthCumbriaChangeProgrammeandParticipateUKtorunaseriesofeventsforthepublictohelpshapewhattheSustainabilityTransformationPlanpublic-facingdocumentlookslikeandhowit’smessagesaredeliveredbeforeitisreleased.
