Accordion music is
popular in San Diego and
other cities on the West
Coast. The cultural heri-
tage of several European
countries is strengthened
by their music. The accor-
dion as a musical instru-
ment is very important for
so many country’s music.
For this reason, several
ALSI members continue to
entertain as soloists and in
groups for dances and
many special events. Octo-
berfests, Carnival season,
Springfests, bal lroom
dances and other cultural
events keep accordionist
busy making music.
Our local San Diego
ALSI accordionist, Tom
Eskola played a beautiful
Showcase for ALSI in
January. His flair for both
European and American
music was superb. Thank
You Tom. We all recog-
nize your passion for mu-
sic and hope to see you at
ALSI future club events.
The music keeps on
coming to ALSI monthly
club activities. We are
fortunate to have as a
member Ron Griffin, a
wonderful expressive mu-
sician. On Valentines Day,
February 14th, Ron will
present a grand Showcase
for the ALSI club mem-
bership and their guests.
Ron Griffin’s Showcase
music program will in-
clude ballads, beautiful
Latin melodies and those
memorable accordion
standards. Everyone is
welcome to ALSI in Feb-
ruary to hear Ron Griffin,
a very dynamic performer.
A drawing will be held
before his Showcase to
give away free tickets to
the March and April club

HAPPINESS AT ALSI
January, 2010
by Sharon Marotte
January 10, 2010 was the ALSI meeting
at Mt Miguel Covenant Village and we had a
good time AGAIN!! What a great way to
spend a Sunday afternoon, listening to accor-
dion music with our friends! The players
around the village were: Vicki Eriqat in the
Cafeteria, Kjell Holmes at Brandel, Crider #1
was Al Cerutti and Jane Ford was in Crider
#2. Bob Page was our mystery player – he
plays beautifully, with good song selections for
us to listen to as the crowd gathered for the
afternoon. Bill Barr was our MC – he was a
busy person, collecting players and keeping the
program going. We say a big THANK YOU
to Merle Williams for being so faithful about
videoing all of our ALSI meetings, Showcase,
and Concerts. He has had this job for the past
10 years and has never missed a meeting. This
was his last ALSI meeting to video and we say
again, THANK YOU.
The first player was Sharon Marotte
(me). My first song was Gratinee Mussette
valse followed by the Dakota Polka (north or
south Dakota is not specified!). Myron FLoren
recorded this song on Mercury Records #5434.
The last song was Teresina Polka by Pietro
Deiro, 1954. Rick, the drummer for Tom
Eskola, was asked to play along – that was the
best thing ever!!
It was so much
fun!!
Marian
Sowell asked
Rick, the drum-
mer, to play
along with her
also. Her songs
were Cotton-
field and Tux-
edo Junction – nice swing style. It is so great
to see and hear Marian again. She always has a
nice big smile on her face!
Al Jacobs played several songs – La Gittara
Romana from Italy, Domino from France and
Satin Doll. Al can just stand up and play any-
thing – what an entertainer!!
Juergen Rosenfeld joined us again
Page 4 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
HAPPINESS—continued
from Oceanside – He comes dressed in his
German clothes and stands up and plays from
memory, just like Al Jacobs. His songs were a
Landler, but more like a Country 10 step
someone in the audience said. He then played
a piece from Tames Last (sorry for the spell-
ing) and a march, Alte Commarde – Old Fel-
lows. Juergen wears a hat with all kinds of
interesting pins on it… next time he wears it,
check out his hat pins.
Joe Columbo next entertained us
with three songs, he stood up and played very
nicely!! Autumn Leaves, Younger than Spring-
time and Tra Veglia e Sonno, which means,
half awake and half asleep. Joe just keeps get-
ting better and better when he plays for ALSI.
Keep up the good work, Joe. Hope to see
you at every meeting.
Lou Fanucchi surprised us with his
visit. He played two songs which were incredi-
ble – Oblivion and music from Phantom of the
Opera. Lou plays such beautiful music, his left
hand crawls all over the bass side – we are al-
ways in awe of his musical abilities.
Gordon Kohl’s Monday night group
plus several others assembled to play the Para-
gon March. This song was written by Anthony
Galla-Rini. He would have been 106 years old
on January 18 if he were still with us. We
played the Paragon March as a tribute to him
and did it very well!! Anthony Galla-Rini would
have been proud of us.
We had our cake/coffee break and en-
joyed a very nice afternoon outside. Lou Fanuc-
chi played his accordion on the patio during this
time. Helen Stables once again baked a great
cake! We were excited to listen to Tom Eskola
play the Showcase so we ate in a hurry and then
on with the show!! —

Christmas Music at the Park
by Kjell Holmes
On Saturday, December 19
th
, our Accordion Lov-
ers Society International (ALSI) Ensemble was invited
to play Christmas music for the Children’s Annual
Christmas party at Standley Park Recreation Center
which we have been doing for many years. We enjoy
being part of this great event, watching the kids who
are excited about Santa’s visit plus we are treated to
a delicious breakfast served by the staff.
ALSI has been using this facility for many years
with practice sessions every 2
nd
and 4
th
Saturday
mornings. The Recreation Center is a clean and wel-
coming place and the city staff is very accommodating.
Most important for our group is that it offers us an
opportunity to show off the accordion to young chil-
dren that visit the Center. We often see parents and
young children watching and listening to our music.
The ALSI group has played for many functions in
the local San Diego area. We are a group of twelve
when we invite a drummer. We typically have 10
accordion players and an upright bass player. We
were pleased to be included in the first Oktoberfest
in University City which was also held at the Standley
Park Recreation Center in October, 2009. We look
forward to being a part of these same events in 2010
as well as enjoying our Saturday practices at the Rec-
reation Center on Governor Drive. —

concert, Bonnie will present a Workshop prior to
the club break. (The focus will be “Musical Con-
cepts for Accordionists). Everyone wanting to pick
up music technique will want to attend this work-
shop. Bring your accordion!
The April 11th ALSI Showcase will be Louisiana
style music by R.A. Richard. The authentic Louisiana
music will make you feel great. You will want to
dance or sing along to funny lyrics and wish you had
a dish of gumbo soup with crayfish and Hush Pup-
pies.
R.A. Richard will present a workshop at ALSI
before his Showcase. Come to his class and learn
bass rhythms and be inspired to learn some fun
songs from the Bayou.
On May 2nd, the fantabulous concert artist Sylvia
Barber will return to give a Mini-concert and an in-
credible workshop class at the ALSI club meeting.
Sylvia’s repertoire is vast and incredibly varied. She
is a musician’s musician. Her knowledge of music,
theory and accordion artistry is second to no one.
I am thrilled that Sylvia enjoys playing accordion for
ALSI again this year.
For those music lovers near and far, please set
the date, May 2nd on your calendar. Bring friends
and musicians to hear Sylvia Barber live. My wish is
that we fill the ALSI auditorium on that day!
The ALSI Steering Committee would appreciate
your completing the enclosed member question-
naire (see page 8). Everyone’s ideas will help our
club stay active and energized and full of beautiful
music and social events.
To my music friends,
Best Wishes

CO MI NG NE XT M O NT H
Ron Griffin started his musical career in Phoenix in 1954. The family was watching the
Lawrence Welk Show when Ron’s mother said it was necessary to learn a musical instrument
and asked what instrument Ron would choose. Looking at Myron Floren, Ron said the
accordion! Lorraine Wingo was his first music teacher. Ron’s teacher skipped all the musical
theory, scales and chords and gave Ron lots of Magnate and Diero pieces to play in recitals
and on the Lew King Rangers TV talent contest. Ron appeared several times on the show and
won many prizes.
When Ron’s Dad died, Ron gave up playing the accordion to pursue his education and
career goals. Ron graduated with a BSEE in 1968, in engineering and technical sales careers in
the semiconductor test automation field. Ron then moved on to his sailboat and sailed to San
Diego.
Arriving in San Diego in 1985, Ron met Gordon Kohl. Gordon mentioned ALSI and Ron
went to a meeting where he was encouraged to play and return. ALSI re-kindled Ron’s
interest in the accordion. Ron enjoyed ALSI and its members so much that in 1992, after the
sudden death of Harold Estok, ALSI president, Ron agreed to lead the club for three years.
People that have contributed to Ron’s musicality are: John Bonica, Ione Bailey, Joe Di
DiGiaciento, Gordon Kohl, Lou Fannuchi and Stas Venglevski. Ron considers it a privilege to
perform the showcase at ALSI where so many nice people have encouraged his playing and
expressed appreciation of his music. Be sure to attend this wonderful showcase!
Ron has a vast repertoire that includes Standards and many beautiful Latin Songs. We are
sure to hear these at his showcase performance. Don’t be surprised to hear one of his
favorite polka.

Ilmar started his musical career at age six in his native Estonia. World War 2 forced

moved to Spokane WA. In Spokane he founded the Accordion-Nova School of Accor-
dion where he has a dedicated group of amateur accordionists and students. He also
leads the Spokane Accordion Ensemble. Ilmar was the teacher of our special friend
Sammy Thomas who has presented a few Showcases for ALSI. Saturday evening, Feb-

SHOWCASE REVIEW
TOM ESKOLA SHOWCASE
JANUARY 10, 2010
by Bob Warner
We always look forward to a program by Tom
Eskola. As one of our local accordion profession-
als, Tom has been playing the San Diego and
Southern California scene for years and that pro-
fessionalism shows when he presents a showcase.
Today he
was joined
by drum-
mer Ric
Gent i l l e l a
whose per-
c u s s i o n
backup en-
hanced the
p resen ta -
tion of the
p r o g r a m .
Tom plays
a Concerto
model digi-
tal accor-
d i o n
(manufactured by Accordions International) that
allows him to easily mix digital and acoustic reed
tones to produce a big sound when augmented by
the drums. Tom’s versatility and musical interests
showed in the type of program he chose for us:
polka, waltz, foxtrot, tango, beguine, samba, slow
swing and salsa music. Put that together with clean
keyboard technique and precise tempo and you
are in for some enjoyable listening. So, let’s go
down the program list.
He warmed up with “GO KART POLKA”
quickly followed by “PLAY FIDDLE PLAY”, a beau-
tiful, old time waltz where the digital violin was
used to good effect. Next, Tom did a vocal of an
old time banjo foxtrot called “OLD BONES” and
in keeping with the mood he layered in some key-
board banjo. In “DANCE WITH ME” he layered in
full orchestra behind acoustic accordion for a big,
danceable sound. Nothing fits the accordion like a
good Italian polka such as “BELLA BOCCA” with its
bouncy use of arpeggios. Interestingly enough, this
translates to “PRETTY MOUTH”. A tango such as
“TANGO OF ROMANCE” is the soul of South
American music often performed by the bandoneon.
Tom enhanced it with some unusual voicings.
I’ve often wondered how many polkas there are
in the world; here’s another one, “FOUR ACES
POLKA”. Tom was busy on the keyboard with this
fast moving piece. “LA PACHANGA” samba was
quite unusual with its unique drum beat and use of
steel drum voicing by Tom. “JE NE SAI PAS” foxtrot
changed the mood with electronic piano carrying the
melody. This loosely translates to “I SAY NOT”.
Continuing to use piano, Tom and Ric played
“WATCH WHAT HAPPENS”, a slow swing number
that is a perennial favorite.
Waltz as a dance goes back to the 16
th
cen-
tury and was initially almost considered risqué.
However, the “VAGABOND” waltz is beautiful
with a lilting melody that begs for dancing. Tom
handled the challenging musette passages flu-
ently. Tom and Ric approached the standard
“FRENESI” from a different musical angle using a
salsa rhythm. I never heard it that way before
but it was very effective. The players gave it a
r e a l S ou t h Am er i c a n c h a r a c t e r .
“DALBACKATRALLEN” is a different kind of
polka. Trallen, I believe, refers to some kind of
“trill”. However, this is an old fashioned Ger-
man polka replete with tuba bass and consider-
able treble challenges.
For the last number, our member Sharon
Marrotte joined Tom and Ric to play the Ger-
man waltz “BERGLEBEN”. This title refers to
mountains in some way, perhaps mountain life.
This was a typical sounding Austrian-German
piece played in fast ¾ time. It was great. The
program finished with a polka encore starting
with the venerable “BEER BARREL” much to
the joy of the audience. We will be looking for-
ward to more of Tom’s showcases in the future.
