Abstract
TheMutualImprovementAssociationisagroupofwomenwhohavebeenmeetingcontinuouslysince1857inSandySpring,Maryland.Thereisastrongchancethattheyaretheoldestwomen’sgroupintheUnitedStatesthathasbeenmeetingcontinuously.Thegroupmeetsonceamonth,rotatinghousesforeverymeeting.Eachgatheringconsistsofamealfollowedbyameeting.Themissionistoimprovethemindofthemselvesandthosearoundthembysharinginformation.Inthebeginning,theinformationfocusedonwaystoimprovehomeandfamilylife.Asthetimeschanged,thegroupbegantoshareanddiscusstopicssuchascurrentevents,socialjustice,prominentpeople,andtheevolvingworld.Ingeneral,thegroupavoidscontroversialsubjects,suchaspolitics,religion,andsex.Thetopicsdiscussedarewidelyvariedandverydiverse.
History
ThefirstmeetingoftheMutualImprovementAssociationwasheldonMay1,1857atSherwood,thehomeofB.RushRobertsandMaryL.Roberts.Atthisfirstgathering,agroupofninewomenformedaclubwithregulationsthatfitwiththeirgoaltopromote“theirownandeachother’simprovement.”1Theydecidedonwhen,where,whattime,andhowthemeetingswouldberun.Theirmissionwas“thatweshallofferforthebenefitoftheAssociationsuchinformationaswemayhaveobtained–byexperienceorotherwise–inanywaycalculatedtoelevatethemind,increasethehappiness,lightenthelabor,oraddtothecomfortofoneanother,orourfamiliesandneighbors.”2Duringthefirstfiftyyears,themeetingswereheldthelastThursdayofeverymonthinthemid-afternoon(aroundlunchinthewinter).Memberswereencouragedtoaskquestionsorgiveadvicerelatedtothehomeandfamily,toreadshortliteraryselections(e.g.stories,articles,essays,sermons),tosharelettersandstories,andtopresenttopicsfordiscussion.
Sincetherewerenocomparableclubsforwomenatthetimetoserveasamodel,theAssociationwasorganizedandconductedasaQuakerbusinessmeetinginthattherewerenoofficers(exceptforthesecretary)andeachmemberwasinvitedtoshareateachmeeting,thusgivingeverypersonanequalvoice.AnarticlewrittenonSandySpringrurallifeandclubsinTheCountryGentlemaninAugust1913attributesthelongevityoftheAssociationandothersimilarorganizationsinSandySpringtotheQuakerinfluenceonthewaythegroupconducteditself.Byhavingonlyoneofficerandrotatingwhohoststhemeetings,afeelingofcooperationaswellasafeelingofindividualresponsibilityfulfilledthemembers.3
Overthefirstone-hundredyears,118womenweremembersoftheAssociation.4Inadditiontotheregularmembers,guestswereoftenincludedinthemeetings,withnumbersrangingfromonetotwentypermeeting.Inamiscellaneousnewspaperarticlepublishedaboutthefiftieth“Golden”

anniversaryin1907,theystatedthatitwasestimatedthat“threethousandwomen”attendedtheAssociationmeetingsfrom“nearlyallthestatesandseveralforeigncountries”and“numerousotherclubsofwomenhavebeenformedinconsequence.”5Anumberofguestswouldattendthemeetingsandthenreturntoalatermeetingwithareportthattheyhadbeeninspiredtoformasimilarclubintheirhometowns.
Inthebeginningyears,thememberstalkedabouthandwork,makingsoap,dye,andotherhouseholdgoodsandsolutions,aswellasgrowing,preserving,andcookingfood.Whilethegroupwasneverexplicitlyanaidsociety,theyoftenspokeaboutdifferentphilanthropicinstitutionsandundertookcharityworkduringmeetingsorspecialorganizedevents,suchassewinggarmentsandprovidingaidtowoundedsoldiersonbothsidesduringtheCivilWar,toorphanasylumsinthecity,tovictimsofnaturaldisasters,toIndiansoutwest,andtoothersuchmissions.Astheyearsprogressed,thecontributionsgrewmoreliteraryinnature,oftenfocusingontopicsaboutprominentpeople,education,travelandforeigncultures,faith,health,currentevents,familyandchildrearing,andself-improvement.Poetryandotherliteraryprosewereoftenreadorrecited,withsomeofthefavoritesbeingWhittier,EllaWheelerWilcox,andLongfellow.Thegroupingeneralpromotedoptimism,withanemphasisplacedoncultivatinghappiness,cheerfulness,courage,andbenevolencetocreatehappierhomesandcommunities.Theybelievedthatlittlethingsledtogreatthings,asentimentoftenexpressedthroughoutthefirstfiftyyears.Thegroupdiscussedissuesrelatedtowomen’srights(e.g.equalpay,equalwork,righttovote),thetemperancemovement,childlabor,educationreform,war,andothertopicsrelatedtosocialjustice.
Thegroupclaimstobetheoldestcontinuouslymeetingwomen’sgroupinthecountry.AccordingtoanarticleintheSentinelfromJune1957,intheone-hundredyearsthattheclubhadbeenmeeting,onlythirty-twomeetingsweremissed,sixofthosecausedbygasrationingduringWorldWarII.6Othermeetingsmissedwereduetothedeathofamemberorabelovedcommunitymember,toillnessinthefamilyofthehostessofthemonth,ortoweatherthatpreventedtravelling.

ThecollectionofAssociationminutesconsistsofeightvolumesofminutesrangingfrom1857-1907.Thisfindingaidcoversthefirstfiftyyearsoftheminutes.Foreachyearoftheminutes,thereisalistoftopicsdiscussedatthemeeting,aswellasatablewiththehomeswherethemeetingstookplace,thememberswhoattendingthemeetingsthatyear,andtheguestswhoattendedthemeetingsthatyear.Thetypesofcommunicationssharedatthemeetingsincluded,butwerenotlimitedtoletters,recitations,recipes,sermons,lectures,songs,poems,essays,articles,lectures,advice,andquestions.
