A Note from the Director …..

Hello everyone and welcome back to the new year of 2017 and the

Chinese year of the Rooster!

This year is going to be another exciting and action packed year for

all, we have lots of celebration days to explore and discover coming

up, starting with Chinese New Year at the end of this month.

It is annual donation time again and we would appreciate your input

on the following:

⇒ 1 ream of copy paper

⇒ 6 pk toilet rolls

⇒ 2 box's tissues

⇒ 1 pk crayons, markers or pencils

⇒ 1 pk of wipes (toddlers only)

As the new year progresses please remember that all items brought

to Kindy are clearly labelled with your child’s name on them to avoid

the disappointment of getting things lost. We do have a lost proper-

ty but it is cleared regularly and items are donated to Charity.

We are also looking for some new and exciting fundraising ideas for

this year, so if anyone has any feedback on this please do not

hesitate to let any one of us know. We are always looking for new

creative ways to make our fundraising targets achievable.

We are also always looking for input and feedback in regard to the

children’s program and the service in general. You are welcome to

check on the lockers for the latest “theme” of the day/week and if

you have any feedback, please pop it in the communicate book or let

one of the teachers know about it. Any other suggestions in the box.

Family Photos …

To create a sense of security and belonging for the children who

attend our service we would like to set up “Family” walls in each room.

If you could please bring in a family photo to include on our walls that

would be fantastic as children love to look at their family photo and tell

their friends all about them. It becomes quite a talking point and

helps our children settle in.

Community Events

NORTH PINE MARKETS - Every Sunday, North Pine Country Park, Dayboro Road, Kurwongbah.

8am to 2pm, FREE entry to everyone : fresh farm goods and produce, quality arts and crafts, hand

made goodies and much more!

EAT STREET MARKETS - Hamilton Wharf, 17 MacArther Ave, Hamilton. Friday and Saturday

4pm to 10pm. Eat street markets is a wonderment of the senses with a variety of aromatic interna-

tional cuisine and vibrant textiles to enhance the sights, senses and sounds from live performers. It

is an great interactive market experience new to the wharf.

REDCLIFFE MARKETS - Every Sunday, Redcliffe Parade, Redcliffe. From 6.30am in the morning

until after lunch. Free entry and fun, food and stalls for all. Come early to check out the fresh

fruit and veges for sale. There are arts and crafts stalls as well as the usual retail premises open

for your shopping enjoyment.

Put together a scrump�ous sandwich or wrap using burrito, lavish bread, muffin or pita:

Perfect Summer Children’s Snack!

All you need is celery, grapes, kiwi fruit

cherry tomatoes, orange, lemon, cucumber,

peanut butter and cream cheese and create

until your heart is content.

The little eyes can been purchased from

most cheap shops but please ensure you are

supervising children while they are eating.

No Jab, No Pay, No Jab, No Play! Please remember for all of you who are returning this year, you will need to be fully

immunised and supply a copy of your immunisation statement (not the red book) as proof.

We will not be enrolling any children who are not fully immunised.

As mentioned last year it is easy to get a copy of

your child’s immunisation statement through your

“my gov” account. If you don’t have an account

set up and have Medicare linked you will need to

do this asap.

Please log on to www.my.gov.au to create your

account. The links are very simple to follow and

when you are all set up you can then link such

services as “Centrelink”, “Medicare” and “ATO”

For families returning this year, Please ensure

you bring in your child/ren up to date

immunisation statement immediately.

Sustainability for 2017 Well this coming year is going to be filled with another lot of new ideas and

achievements in our continual progress towards being a sustainable service and

upholding our four certificates in the “Green Steps Program”.

We will be continuing with our Sustainability Committee in 2017 and we are

looking for new members in the coming months.

It is a commitment of four evenings a year attending our quarterly sustainabil-

ity committee meetings. It also gives you the chance to be part of our services

sustainable future.

If you are interested in being a new committee member, please see myself or

our sustainability leader, Miss Melanie.

Car Park Safety!

As it is the beginning of the new year, I would just like to take a minute to remind you all of our car park safety.

It is extremely important that you all take extra care when you are coming and going from our car park. Children are only small and can not always be seen if they run out behind a car, so remember to ensure that you keep your children by your sides when you walk to and from your car. We have yellow lines at the walking entrance to the carpark, ensure your children understand that they are to stop at the yellow lines before proceeding to the car.

It is very scary to know that 30% of child deaths involving a vehicle happens from low speed child run-overs, which predominately occur in non-traffic settings (eg drive ways; car parks; garages and entering or exiting traffic flow)

With these statistics it is imperative that we all watch out for children in our car park, including if we are walking.

Key message 1

Children can be vulnerable to injury due to their size, cognitive and physical development. It is important to consider risks from a child’s point of view, rather than from our perspective as adults

Key message 2

The car is not a play area. Never leave children unattended in vehicles and keep the doors locked when the vehicle is not in use.

Toys at Kindy

It is the policy of Petrie Kids Korner not to bring toys into class unless they

are for “show and tell” and brought in by the parent and handed directly to a

teacher for safe keeping on their desk.

A young child does not necessarily understand the concept of sharing, keeping

things safe & unbroken or the danger of small parts attached to a toy, so

please respect our commitment to keeping your child’s environment safe and

secure by ensuring you do not allow your children to bring toys to kindy.

We can not express this enough, having had toys in the past come into kindy

and causing a safety hazard.

Toilet Training Policy It is a policy of this service for toilet training to begin when appropriate for each child’s age and stage of development. Parents will be consulted on the methods used at home and feedback will be provided on each child’s progress at the centre to make the transition as easy as possible. A toilet training plan will be completed in consultation with the family to ensure that transition is consistent both in the centre and at home.

Children will be offered frequent opportunities for toileting, particularly before & after meals and before & after sleep periods, before and after going outside, as well as during the nappy changing process itself, should they be in the process of transitioning. To aid in this process we encourage parents to use room communication books to transfer relevant information to staff.

Toilet Training Procedure:

• Parents are to supply at least three or more sets of clean clothes.

• Keep the child calm & as comfortable as possible during the whole process.

• Give the child a sense of pride & accomplishment.

• When the parents and staff agree to begin toilet training & the child is showing an interest, take the child to the toilet at frequent intervals during the day, including before and after a nappy change.

• Allow the child to sit on the toilet as long as he/she is willing. At any sign of distress, the process is to be stopped.

• Never punish or embarrass the child for accidents.

• If the child has soiled or wet clothing, apply gloves and slightly rinse under the sluice and put in a plastic bag to seal and put in a soiled items container found in all bathroom areas.

• Toilet changing chairs (if parent supplies) will be emptied directly into the toilet immediately and washed with warm soapy water. Ensure that it is not rinsed in the hand washing sink.

• Encourage children how to wipe themselves clean, especially girls who are to be encouraged to wipe from front to back.

• Children’s hands are to be washed with soap & water after each toileting experience, as per our cen-tre hand washing policy

• Educator will wash hands thoroughly.

• Due to the high risk of asthma, talcum powders will not be used on children during a toileting proce-dure

• Bathroom floor, sink, & toilets must be cleaned at lunch times, afternoons and when necessary with warm soapy water.

Signs That a Child is Ready for Toilet Training:

• When a child is staying dry 80% of the time (average age is 27.7 months).

• Physically mature — sphincter muscles need to be developed.

• Verbally skilled — child is able to tell you of their need to use the toilet.

• Aware of their own elimination.

• If a child resists the use of the potty or toilet, avoid the power struggle and try again at another time
