MonValley District Newsletter

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As we enter 2016, I reflect on my short tenure in MonValley District.

The last year and one-half I have met many people, shared in ministry and gotten

a first-hand look at the beautiful and scenic area of MonValley.

In June (2016), as most of you know, I will be appointed district

superintendent to the Little Kanawha District in Parkersburg. Much prayer and

forethought went into the decision to request this appointment. As with many of

you, as my parents age, they are in need of my presence and attention. This year

and one-half in MonValley has been a big learning curve for me, as well as a

blessing beyond words.

I am not finished yet! I will continue to provide my best effort to work

with you and worship with you as we share in ministry until July 1, 2016.

I want to thank Bishop Steiner Ball for my appointment to MonValley

District and for allowing the appointment transfer to Little Kanawha District so I

am able to be close to and take care of my parents.

I will work closely with your new district superintendent and strive to

make this a smooth transition for all.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Thank You:

A heartfelt “Thank You” from Susie and myself to the clergy and

spouses in MonValley for the thoughtful and touching gift we

received at Clergy Christmas Dinner. We are thankful to the Lord

that we have been blessed to serve by your side.

Newly Appointed MonValley District Superintendent

It is the intention of Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball to appoint Rick Sale (FE) to the position of District

Superintendent of the MonValley District, effective July 1, 2016. Rick is no stranger to MonValley District as

he received his BS/BA from WVU in 1978. He served Westover UMC from 1997-2000 and Woodland UMC

from 2000-2009. Rick received his M.Div. from Perkins SMU in 1992 and during his ministry has also served

Salem and is currently serving First UMC, Clarksburg. Rick’s wife, Carol, is also very well known. She is a

faculty member at WVU and has been (and continues to be) instrumental in CONAM (WV Committee on

Native American Ministries). We welcome Rick and Carol with open arms and ask the Lord to guide their

path as they enter into a new area of ministry.

Billy Graham’s Prayer for the New Year

Our Father and our God, as we stand at the beginning of this new year we confess our need of Your

presence and Your guidance as we face the future.

We each have our hopes and expectations for the year that is ahead of us—but You alone know what it

holds for us, and only You can give us the strength and the wisdom we will need to meet its challenges. So

help us to humbly put our hands into Your hand, and to trust You and to seek Your will for our lives during

this coming year.

In the midst of life’s uncertainties in the days ahead, assure us of the certainty of Your unchanging love.

In the midst of life’s inevitable disappointments and heartaches, help us to turn to You for the stability and

comfort we will need.

In the midst of life’s temptations and the pull of our stubborn self-will, help us not to lose our way but to

have the courage to do what is right in Your sight, regardless of the cost.

And in the midst of our daily preoccupations and pursuits, open our eyes to the sorrows and injustices of our

hurting world, and help us to respond with compassion and sacrifice to those who are friendless and in need.

May our constant prayer be that of the ancient Psalmist: “Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I

will keep them to the end” (Psalm 119:33).

We pray for our nation and its leaders during these difficult times, and for all those who are seeking to bring

peace and justice to our dangerous and troubled world. We pray especially for Your protection on all those

who serve in our armed forces, and we thank You for their commitment to defend our freedoms, even at the

cost of their own lives. Be with their families also, and assure them of Your love and concern for them.

Bring our divided nation together, and give us a greater vision of what You would have us to be. Your

Word reminds us that “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12).

As we look back over this past year we thank You for Your goodness to us—far beyond what we have

deserved. May we never presume on Your past goodness or forget all Your mercies to us, but may they

instead lead us to repentance, and to a new commitment to make You the foundation and center of our lives

this year.

And so, our Father, we thank You for the promise and hope of this new year, and we look forward to it with

expectancy and faith. This I ask in the name of our Lord and Savior, who by His death and resurrection has

given us hope both for this world and the world to come.

Amen

Mission and Ministry News

Scott’s Run Settlement House: Greetings from Scott's Run Settlement House! We have just wrapped up

our Christmas Adopt-A-Family program. Through the generosity of our community, we were able to provide

children's gifts and household needs to 87 families this year! As we move forward in the New Year, we will begin to

start our volunteer tax preparation program for low to moderate income families. This service is provided free of

charge. Last year our returns resulted in over $50,000 of refunds to our clients! We hope the program will continue

to be a great success. Thank you for your continued support! Peace and Blessings,

- Shay Petitto, Executive Director

Cooperative Parish News

Morgantown West Cooperative Parish: On Saturday December 5th, 2015 several people, including three

youth, from around the parish gathered at SunDale Nursing home to address Christmas cards for the residents and to

color pictures with and for the residents. I’m not sure who enjoyed the time the most, the residents or the people from

the parish. It was a good day for all. We hope to be able to have parish activities at the many different nursing homes

and rehab centers around the area. I believe this is a great mission for us to develop within our parish. We will be

discussing this mission along with other parish activities and events at our parish planning meeting on Sunday,

January 17th at 4pm at Westover UM Church. Pastors, please make plans to attend this meeting and bring at least

one representative from each of your churches. Hope to see you there as we make and schedule tentative parish

activities and plans for 2016. May 2016 be a year filled with God’s blessing upon you.

- Pastor Jo McCartney, Parish Coordinator

Shinnston Cooperative Parish: We bring you greetings from the Shinnston Cooperative Parish!! We are

celebrating the completion of another year of working together to bring the Good News into our communities. We

are looking forward to continuing our current ministries and seek more opportunities to serve in areas in the New

Year. We have created two parish teams to assist our churches with Vacation Bible School volunteers and funeral

dinner assistance. So, keep your eyes peeled for more exciting happenings from the Shinnston Cooperative

Parish. Blessings to you all!!! - Pastor Cindy Murphy, Parish Coordinator

Celebration of Mission Event

C.O.M.E.—2016

The MonValley District Celebration of Mission Event is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2016. It

will run from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The new location will be East Fairmont High School, 1993

Airport Road, Fairmont. Please make note of the date on your calendar and spread the word to your

congregations, family and friends.

The C.O.M.E. is an opportunity for all persons and churches to present the fruits of their faith,

labors, and commitment to the support of our West Virginia Annual Conference United Methodist Mission

Projects, Church and Community Ministries, and Volunteers in Mission. It is a day to reach out to help the

world’s needs through local fund-raising by making and selling crafts, quilts, food items, and by gathering

material goods for mission kits and /or other designated needs. It is a celebration of the empowerment of

the Holy Spirit to do good in this world as the Body of Christ. Join other congregations in supporting

missions with your presence on April 30.

The two missions that have been assigned to MonValley District for 2016 are the Ebenezer

Community Outreach Center and the Greater Clarksburg Cooperative Parish.

Rick and the Co-Chairs for the COME (Ginny Davidson, Barbara Metcalfe and Janice Watts) ask

that you begin planning and preparing now so that our upcoming COME will be awesome! We invite you

to send us your COME activity and/or plans for 2016. What will you be doing to raise funds for this event?

Please email us at [email protected] with your information. We will be sharing across

the district how you have been and continue to be “Mission-Minded” in the district newsletter each month.

Here are some money raising possibilities we want to share for the MonValley District Celebration

of Mission Event: Collect money in church the month of March, Put out a basket every Sunday and have

members donate their loose change, Bake sales, Hot Dog sale, Basement sale, Gospel sing, Have an auction

in each parish, Get the youth involved, Bakeless bake sale, Walk-a-thon, Fishing tournament, Craft sales.

Jesus said, “As you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it unto

me.” (Matthew 25:40) The district superintendent hopes that churches, individuals, and businesses will be

willing to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
