ISIS/TERRORISM

BASIC INFORMATION (ISLAM)

• Jihad (struggle, not holy war) is the religious ruling that instructs Muslims to study, preach, and defend Islam, not use of violence

• Sunni: accepted the bringing into power of Muhammad's elected successors. The majority of Muslims in the world today are Sunnis

• Shiite: believe that leaders must be descendants of Muhammad. They rule Iran and also have a large influence in Iraq and Syria

• Wahhabism: an extremely strict interpretation of Islam founded in the 18th century. It was the form of Islam used by Osama bin Laden

• Family oriented, advocates peace

• Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham

• Terrorist group that is taking over governments

• Trace roots to 2004• Began as al-Qaeda• Thrown out two years later

• Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is the leader

• ISIS originated in Iraq• The majority of Iraq’s population is Shiite

• ISIS is run by Sunni extremists

• The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims

• Goals:• Create fear among the public• Try to convince citizens that their

government is powerless to prevent terrorism

• Get immediate publicity for their causes

U.S.’ FIGHT FOR OIL

• The United States:• Went into Saudi Arabia just to protect the oil reserves

• “Our jobs, our way of life and the freedom of friendly countries around the world would all suffer if control of the world’s great oil reserves fell into the hands of Saddam Hussein” (President Bush)

• Kept troops in the Persian Gulf areas• Created tensions (no common values or culture)• Reminded the Arabic people of past repressive

Western rule• Angered extremists (Osama bin Laden)

• Arabia could defend itself • The U.S. isn’t welcome on their holy land

FUTURE SOLUTIONS (TERRORISM)

• ALL MUSLIMS ARE NOT TERRORISTS • This is finally being accepted more and more

as people educate themselves

• Begin new drilling for oil locally:• Won’t have to depend on foreign oil• Won’t have to keep dangerous

international ties

• Fracking, solar power, wind power, hydroelectric power

• Fracking- the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.• Solar power- power obtained by harnessing the

energy of the sun's rays• Wind Power- power obtained by harnessing the

energy of the wind• Hydroelectric power- the production of electrical

power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water

• IN IRAQ:• Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, The Czech

Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Albania, Estonia and Hungary 

• Lessen airstrikes •  Innocent people are being slaughtered• Only do as necessary

• Send in ground troops to confirmed locations of ISIS members

• Rehab/halfway houses won’t work
