Welcome to another fi ve magical Wednesday mornings in Sydney in 2020, the last season that I have the privilege of designing for Musica Viva. As usual it is brimming with variety, bringing together local and international talent of the highest order.

For something completely diff erent, the year hits the ground running with the brassy saxophonic brilliance of the Nexas Quartet in a virtuosic program featuring An American in Paris. Two remarkable young Australians, mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean and guitarist Andrey Lebedev, now live in London but reunite in Sydney for our dazzlement in a program of shimmering Hispanic spice. Equally multinational and only slightly less exotic, the masterful Ian Munro makes a long-awaited return to the solo piano seat in our morning concert series.

We are especially fortunate this year to feature, with generous support from the Michael Hill International Violin Competition, the brilliant young South Korean violinist Anna Im, grand prize winner of the competition in 2019. Anna will appear with renowned New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge.

The year draws to a magnifi cent close with the Goldner String Quartetcelebrating its 25th year of music-making. Their program of Mendelssohn and Beethoven encircles the world premiere of music by a young composer from the Sydney Conservatorium, Christine Pan.

Whatever path my successor, Paul Kildea, chooses to carve through the boundless delights of chamber music, I’m sure that Sydney Morning Masters will continue to be a highlight of the musical year.

The ‘American in Paris’, from whom this program draws its title, is George Gershwin himself. Inspired by the sounds he heard in France’s capital in 1926, his lively orchestral work An American in Paris lies at the heart of this colourful program for saxophone quartet. Nexas are one of Australia’s foremost saxophone ensembles, dedicated to putting the classical saxophone back on musical radars everywhere. These versatile woodwind instruments, invented in France, can sound like anything from brass to percussion and everywhere in between – simply close your eyes and be transported.

Singer Lotte Betts-Dean and guitarist Andrey Lebedev make an unusual and highly engaging artistic pairing, praised for their vivid and characterful expressiveness, and razor-sharp musicianship. In this memorably entertaining program, they bring the great classical traditions of Spanish art-song and fl amboyant guitar

technique to the Musica Viva stage, topping it off with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim, the inventor of Bossa Nova – a luxurious fusion of jazz and Brazilian music for guitar and voice which has been described as the aural equivalent of relaxing slowly into a warm bath!

Ian Munro is one of Australia’s fi nest musicians, in demand as both a performer and a composer. For this solo recital Ian has chosen music which refl ects on friendship, and which brings out his trademark style of fi nely judged, expressive pianism. Bach’s playful farewell to his travelling brother leads neatly to the lively dialogue between Schumann’s ‘imaginary friends’ Florestan and Eusebius. Dohnányi’s charming bagatelles pay homage not just to the friends he was leaving, but the master composers they all loved; while Ian’s own refl ections on words by Judith Wright provide the perfect conclusion.

The Michael Hill International Violin Competition is one of the world’s most coveted international violin prizes, and has produced many notable laureates. Held biennially in New Zealand, sixteen fi nalists aged between 18 and 28 compete for the grand prize package, valued at over $100,000. Musica Viva is pleased to partner with the MHIVC to present the 2019 winner, Anna Im, as part of her Prizewinner’s tour of Australasia. Joining her will be acclaimed New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge.

Concluding the 2020 season, the last to be programmed by Carl Vine, it simply had to be the Goldners, Australia’s fi nest string quartet, celebrating their 25th anniversary. With no changes in membership during this time – an extraordinary achievement in itself – the Goldners bring an unmatched sense of togetherness to every phrase. Their program includes a new short work for string quartet by rising Sydney composer Christine Pan, matched with the creative fl air of middle-period Beethoven in his ‘Serioso’ Quartet, and the fresh, joyous, early quartet of a young Felix Mendelssohn, composed during his fi rst visit to England.

Our story began on 8 December 1945 with a concert of Beethoven and Mozart at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In the 75 years since, the people of Musica Viva – our artists and collaborators, audiences and donors, volunteers and committees, board and staff – have created a fertile landscape of music right across Australia.

We started as a chamber music organisation focused on just one ensemble, but we soon expanded beyond Sydney to become one of the world’s largest presenters of chamber music. We showcase the fi nest local and international chamber music artists to audiences all around Australia, in our most prestigious concert halls and our smallest school halls, in capital cities, regional centres and remote communities.

We are proud of our history of uncovering new talent, developing the early careers of some of our best musicians and promoting our most acclaimed ensembles here and overseas. We continue to nurture the careers of young musicians, and in 2020 our inaugural National Chamber Music Championship will give high school students from all over Australia the opportunity to experience the joy of making chamber music.

Through the support of many donors, we have commissioned hundreds of new compositions from Australian composers, and we play a leading role in supporting female composers through our Hildegard Project.

We have been bringing live music to schools for nearly 40 years, and whole generations of Australian children have experienced our programs. We continue to delight and inspire close to 300,000 students each year, and we support their teachers with vital training and professional development.
