Morrison's Background

William Morrison, father of current chairman, Ken Morrison, founded the company in 1899.

From its origins as an egg and butter merchant in Bradford, West Yorkshire, the company developed into market stalls and on to

counter service. Progress was such that in 1958, a small town centre shop was opened. In the 1960s, Morrison's was at the forefront of supermarket

development, opening its first store, "Victoria", in Bradford in 1961. In 1967, Morrison's became a public company and was more than

174 times over-subscribed as over 80,000 investors tried to purchase shares.

Morrison's Size We are the UK’s fourth largest food retailer with 403 stores. Our business is

mainly food and grocery – the weekly shop. Uniquely we source and process most of the fresh food that we sell though our own manufacturing facilities, giving us close control over provenance and quality; and we have

more people preparing more food in store than any other retailer.

Every week nine million customers pass through our doors and 124,000 colleagues across the business work hard each day to deliver great service

to them. With competitive prices and hundreds of special offers, we are proud to save our customers money every day.

A unique and high profile advertising campaign emphasising Morrison's fresh food credentials and in-store preparation has won the company a major award.

Market Street offering, the fact that the supermarket’s staff prepare more fresh food in-store than any other retailer and the company’s focus on great value for customers.

The hugely popular campaign was also the advert which most viewers could recall when it first took to television screens last summer.

Michael Bates, Marketing Director for Morrison's, said: “Our advertising has been really popular with the ever-growing number of customers coming to our stores and has highlighted the things which make Morrison's different, like Market Street and our focus on fresh food.”
