Greetings Yachties,

I can't believe that summer has already zoomed past us. School has started and I am sad to say that the last patty of Ham-burger Night has been burnt…er…served. When it comes to Ham-burger Night, there are numerous “thank you's” I would like to address. First I would like to thank each and every volunteer who signed to host, help, or bartend. Some members assisted more than once and a few did so on very short notice. It was enjoyable to see the different faces in the galley each week and to taste the va-rieties of treats that each group provided. I would also like to give a huge thanks to my First Mate Nia (I am the Prime-Mate) for her

intense involvement in this year’s Hamburger Night. Nia volunteered to do all the shop-ping and coordinating for our festivities. This involved weekly inventories of supplies, contacting all hosts and assistants and many trips to Costco, Smart and Final, then back to MBYC all with a 2+ year old and an infant in tow! To say that we could have not done it without Nia’s help would truly be an understatement.

On the business side of the club, I have some good news to report. After the budget was set for the 2008 year, the Budget Committee agreed to meet once more in July to see how our finances were tracking and to also discuss if it would be necessary to put a dues increase on the agenda for the November General Meeting. The Budget Committee met, and after much head scratching and number crunching, it was determined that a dues increase would not be necessary. This truly made us all smile! This lack of increase did not come easy. It was the direct result of a Treasurer that kept an eagle eye on our fi-nances, a frugal budget, conservative spending at all levels, and most importantly VOL-UNTEERISM. Untold amounts of money have been saved through the labor and dona-tions provided by our members. Be it flood recovery, hoist rebuilds, launch repair, paint-ing, shrub trimming, donations etc., MBYC volunteers continue to be the heart of this club. Thank one and all for keeping MBYC Membership affordable.

Lastly, the time has come to start searching for the 2009 Board of Directors candidates. The first step in this process is the selection of a Nominating Committee. I would like to thank Staff Commodore Lynn Meissen, Staff Commodore Ron May, and past Rear Commodore Gail Condon for accepting the role of this years Nominating Com-mittee. If you are interested in serving your club as a member of the Board of Directors or you know someone who may be, contact any one of these fine individuals. Please don’t wait too long as we intend to post the agenda items for then November General Meeting in the October Masthead.

Well that’s all I have for this month. I look forward to seeing you at the club or on the water,

John Schmidt, Commodore

FUN FLOAT

Tuesday, September 16th, 10:30 a.m.

As we all know Sept. is back to school month. So when you come to paddle please bring a written paper titled "What I Did On My Vaca-tion". Pictures are optional--please no nude photographs.

We shall leave on Tuesday, Sept. 16th at 10:30 AM. Anyone coming in late will have to see me in my private office.

XX's & OO's G.P.P.

August 17th Warren Thomas completed the task of ser-vicing all 25 of our club moorings. I am told that it is nearly impossible to pull a mooring block, make repairs, make adjustments to the length of the chain, and drop it back in the exact same spot from which it was pulled. Consequently, it may seem that your boat is positioned differently-especially in relation to boats around you-than it was in the past. This is normal, but if it seems seriously out of position and you feel it is in danger of hitting other boats let me know right away.

With all mooring tackle from the block to the ball loop being freshly inspected and repaired, it is time for each mooring holder to inspect their moor-ing pennant making sure it is in conformity with MBYC Policy Letter 5, Revi-sion F. Conformity to Policy Letter 5 will bring your pennant into conformity with Morro Bay Municipal Codes 15-28.020 and 15-28.040 as well. The require-ment includes: 1. a pennant line of suitable size for your size of boat; 2. a pennant that terminates in a spliced loop enclosing a metal thimble; 3. a 3/4 inch shackle for securing to the mooring ball loop, and; 4. a shackle bolt safely wired to the body of the shackle with stainless steel wire. I will soon be out to inspect all the pennants. The Boat Storage Yard was cleaned up and weeded during workday last March. It looked clean and presentable then but is starting to look shabby once again. I have started to weed the area between the rows of boats and around the club owned boats. I am asking each of you with a boat in our yard to make sure you have nothing stored under your boat or on the ground around it. All personal property and boat related equipment must be on or in your boat. Also, please pull the weeds that are under and around your boat. I ask this not just to satisfy my ego as Port Captain, but as a reminder that this is what you agreed to do by sign-ing a boat storage agreement. Besides, a clean, ship shape, boat yard is a happy boat yard. Until next month, Jim Phillips. Port Captain

To make better use of our dock the Ocean Fleet is going to start a new program of allowing members who are not racing to use the dock on race days while the Ocean fleet is racing. To maintain some control over what happens and to be able to contact the boats on the dock, they are asking members who would like

to use the dock during races to do, sort of, a preregistration. They would like to have the boat owner come to the skippers meeting at 10:30 on the day of the race or make previous arrangement with me or the Ocean Fleet Captain. You would need to give a cell phone number or be willing to monitor the radio and then move off the dock when informed that that racing boats are returning. One possible complication may be that the juniors often use the dock while the Ocean Racing Fleet is out so this will require more communication between all of us. I hope that this solution works well for everyone involved. The Junior's Morro Bay Yacht Club Regatta will be September 21st.

First race is 11am.

Come support our juniors as they race Optimists, Lasers, & Lidos in front of the Yacht Club.

It's really fun for them when they have a cheering section.

Lunch will be available to all, so buy a hot dog and support the juniors.

Some of our most famous competitors will be racing...come see them in action...they are awesome.

North American Championship Regatta, North American Championship Regatta, not Nationals, that is what Brooks Measures continued to remind us all as we drove up to Eugene Oregon. It seems odd that we call the winner the National champ to me but that was how the trip began. Kenton and I loaded the big big trailer with two Daysailers, then we all piled into the Pickup and headed North, apparently without the air conditioner. Long drive made short, we made it there and only lost a couple of pounds each in the sweat lodge. Eugene is not without its pitfalls. If you have not yet raced in Eugene for a large event then you cannot really understand exactly how critical the race committee is of getting just the right wind, having the perfectly square starting line and course, and never finishing a race if the wind changes dramatically. There were two days for measuring, if you own a Daysailer, you never want to have your boat measured in Eugene. There is a measurer up there that may put you through the ringer. If you can endure his long lectures into the history of the fleet, your boat probably won’t measure up due to some obscure nuance of the history of the manufacturing of the boat, nothing even remotely laid out in the meas-urement guidelines. Long story short always measure your boat before you travel. Racing was postponed the first day, there was wind, it was nice wind, the race committee did not like the direction of the wind. Day two, we started racing early, about 2 ish. First race saw Kenton and his sister Merinda way out in the front, with all of the other top boats, Dave Keran, Dean, Phil, and Gail Condon. Kenton was second, at the weather mark with the rest of the fleet close behind as his sister enjoyed her very first run with the spinnaker. Back uphill and the leads are changing. Dave takes the first race, with Dean, Phil, and Protest less than four feet apart at the finish. Race two saw more of the same. At the end of the day Kenton held onto a fifth, Protest was in third and the Measures oddly enough had yet to finish a race. They have their own story there. Day three saw more tight racing. Phil Root seemed rather worried and spent most of the day tacking on his competition until he finally fouled someone. In the process of spinning his turns he flooded the boat, so he was out of the running for the top spots. On Protest we did a bit poorer and ended up tacking a good deal with Dean who was having a hard day too. End of Day two Kenton in 7th, Protest in 4th, and the Measures finished a race but were proactively stitching up last in the regatta. Day four we did not race, there was wind but it was not in the right direction and therefore was deemed a “sucker wind” by the race committee. Everyone had a great time, we were next to the Fiocks' and they are always a blast to sit with. Some things of interest with the Fiock family; one Fiock broke an ankle, another won the Corinthian trophy, little Timmy won a chest of Trophies for juniors and putting up with his dad, the elder won a couple of trophies, and Bill apparently became really sick from maybe alcohol. Always a great clan to hang out next to. Next years NACR will be held on the east coast in Massachusetts. I believe perhaps there will be some newbie's that will join us on the east coast. Kevin Williams, personal email, [email protected]

Our Caught’cha! this month goes out to Glenda Boatman! What an amazing person. She has done so much for our Sum-mer Sailing Program. She has so many requests for space in the classes she is having to turn them away. She comes in twice a day to check messages on the phone so she can get back to the people as soon as possible, with answers to their sailing classes questions. Glenda is truly an asset to this club! Whomever tries to fill her shoes next year has quite a job ahead of them! Thank you, Glenda! Editor’s note: We would like to make this a monthly feature. You know there are people who do and fix things around the club who don’t get thanked properly. If you see someone doing something or fixing something that no one else sees or you think that person is not getting recognized for the effort they put into the club, please send in your ‘Caught’cha’ to: [email protected] .

People News - On my way South, after camping on Angel Island, I stopped in to see Chuck Wilson, at his new pad.

He’s settled in well with all his favorite pictures on his walls. He’s sharp as a tack and among other things, shared El Toro stories with me. Such as, sailing the Bull Ship Race in San Francisco Bay and dumping in Morro Bay only to be rescued by 3 visiting S.F. policemen. He sends greetings to all those who remember him. (For those who don’t, he’s the one who built all those wonderfully comfortable cushioned wooden chairs—great guy). Rosemary Jorgens

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

The membership committee has been active with the processing of new members. We want to welcome the latest members, David and Sharon Buffo. The Buffo's were voted into the club at the last board meeting on the 14th of August. There are two applications to consider for the September board meeting. They are for Carlton Smith and his wife Deborah Paes DE Barros. Carlton and Deborah are both professors at Palomar College and have a home in Morro Bay. They sail a Daysailer and have participated in several events as prospective members. Summer sailing program, bay races, volunteer training ses-sions, hamburger night and boatyard maintenance are some of their activities. They are sponsored by Duncan McQueen and Peter Behman. The next applicants are John Pope and his wife Chrystine sponsored by Angela Soll and Kevin Williams. The Popes have children in the Jr program and are boat owners as well. Already active with the bay fleet they sail a Daysailer and a great interest in sailing. They are residents of Atascadero. Their application will also be presented at the September board meeting. We have one other application working that will be presented for the October board meeting due to schedul-ing with one of the applicants. The Juniors are active and taking in new members under the direction of Angela Soll. This month’s additions are Abigail Ogle of Morro Bay. Colin and Lydia Stevens of Pismo Beach, Austin Rackov of Cayucos, John and Gwenn Krossa of Cayucos, Ethan Carroll of Morro Bay, and Taylor Messer of Atascadero. Whew!!! A very ac-tive time for the Juniors. It looks like the future of sailing is secure with interest generated by the Juniors thanks to the efforts of Junior Advisor Angela Soll. Good Job Angela! Any questions or comments may be directed to the membership committee and all are welcome. Bill

From your Board of Directors

Your Board for 2008 Commodore: John Schmidt Vice Commodore: Wayne Ratliff Rear Commodore: John Michener Treasurer: Sharon Brooks Secretary: Laura McCarren Senior Director: Glenda Boatman Director: Kit Lockwood

Welcome back to school! Alas, the summer has ended, the burger nights have ceased and we are back to our regular sailing days. We had a great summer of sailing and it looks like everyone has improved in their sailing abilities. In the beginning of the month we had the privilege to go out in the ocean with Greg Barker's, Brian Monroe's and Peter Behman's boats. The wind was light, and the swells were large. There were a few people who got seasick, but all in all I know everyone had a great time. We are planning on going out again in October, so stayed tuned!! This month we are having our annual Junior re-gatta. The classes of boats we will be sailing are: Laser's, Opti's and Lido's. The coaches and I will be placing the Junior Lido sailors with their crew. We will be practicing for the regatta on the June 7th meeting. Please remember to bring all your sailing gear with you when you come to our meetings. The sailing items should include: life jacket, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and a spare pair of clothes. On a different note we are capped out in our membership. We now have 31 juniors and a few on a waiting list. Due to our success we will be starting a staggered day starting in October. For the juniors who are just beginning we will have a start time of 9:00 and go until 1:00. For the juniors who have had more experience will begin at 11:00 and go until 3:00. Lunch will be on the water for both groups. We are going to try and see how this works out. Please feel free to call me if you have questions or concerns with our program. Best regards, Angela Soll, Jr. Advisor
