In order to satisfy the wishes of Russianbusiness women, chic designer stores haveopened their doors in Moscow. Today thereis a risk that visitors will return home withconsiderably more expensive souvenirsthan fur caps and Russian dolls.

Popular shopping streets are Noviy Arbatand the more exclusive Kuznetskiy most.But the number one shopping street isTverskaya ulitsa. Stalin had the streetrestored in the 30’s so here too there isevidence of his liking for massive, greybuildings.

Those who wish to start their shopping tripat one of the shopping centres with thefinest old traditions in the world shouldhead for GUM. The building was designedin the new Russian style at the end of 19thcentury. During the Stalinist period, GUMwas temporarily converted to offices. Nowit accommodates, among other things,Galeries Lafayette, Dior and Benetton.

Yeliseyev’s covered market is the name ofMoscow’s most famous delicatessen shop.During the Soviet period it was calledGastronom no. 1. It is here you buy yourration of vodka and caviar. The Russiansare professional tea drinkers and atChudesa Podnebesnoi you can find thefinest Chinese teas.

For those who wish to visit a market, a trip

to Vernisazh, the famous market inIzmailovo Park, is recommended. Herethere are hundreds of stalls sellingtraditional souvenirs, but also porcelainand jewellery. Don’t be afraid to bargain, ifit does not work at the first stall thenmaybe at one of the subsequent 99.

Families with children can have awonderful time at Detskiy Mir – thechildren’s department store – which is fullof an interesting mixture of Russian andimported toys.

AirportThe largest international airport in Moscowis Sheremetyevo 2. For domestic traveland to countries within the former SovietUnion there are four smaller airports.Sheremetyevo 2 is located 30 km from thecentre and it is easiest to take a taxi.

You can usually book a taxi in advancethrough the hotel or travel agency.Alternatively, there are two different busroutes. They will take you halfway to thecentre where you must change to the

underground railway (you may have towalk a bit).

Public TransportMoscow has one of the world’s mostbeautiful underground railways.Furthermore, it operates well. The price ofone journey is 22 Rbl.

In addition, there are buses, trolley busesand trams. Tickets for these can be boughtat kiosks in the street or from the driverand validated once aboard.

TaxiIt is easiest to get a taxi the traditionalway: stand in the street and hold out yourarm. Civilian cars like to operate as taxis.The official taxis have a chequered logo onthe side and a green lamp on thewindscreen. Taxi meters are seldom used,so agree on a price before travelling.

PostStamps and postcards are sold at the postoffice and most hotels. (The postal servicein Russia is slow.)
