We acknowledge the Kuku Yalanji people, and in particular the Kubirri Warra Clan, the
Traditional Owners of the land on which our school stands and pay our respects to
Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise their custodianship and role in
caring for and maintaining Country over thousands of years.
Principal’s Message
We have had many events over the last fortnight. Once again the emergency services
presentaon was life-like and provided our Year 12 cohort with an insight into the
dangers of the road. A mely reminder to be safe on the roads, follow the speed limits
and pay a"enon.
Our first ever Presentaon Awards Day with the whole school was an amazing
experience. I was thrilled to have the whole school witness the achievements of our
students and recognise their success. Hopefully next year we will be able to have parents
and special guests.
It was with pleasure that we farewelled our Year 12 students at their last assembly. This
group started in Year 7 in 2015 and have worked through the challenges of 2020. I look
forward to seeing the final results of their hard work on 19 December and wish them
success in the future.
The Farewell Dinner was a wonderful experience and much appreciated a0er inially
thinking this event would not happen. To see the proud parents and staff celebrate with
our students decked out in their finest was a fi2ng end to this year.
NAIDOC celebraons held at school involved students parcipang in cultural acvies
across the week led by Kudisha Pierce, our Community Educaon Counsellor and
Indigenous Leaders of Tomorrow.
Congratulaons to Octavia and Josh who were successful in their QATSIF applicaons.
This scholarship provides $500 per semester during Year 11 and 12
to assist with the costs associated with a"aining a Queensland
Cerficate of Educaon.
Wishing you all an enjoyable week ahead.
Kind regards
Michelle Lyons

Year 12 Emergency Services Presentation A simulation of an accident was presented to Year 12 students with Emergency Services providing
a real life response. This is designed to raise awareness and encourage students to take care on
the roads.
A big thank you to Andrew Petrack, QFES for organising the presentation. Thank you also to the
members of the Police, SES, Fire Brigade, Hospital staff and Undertaker who participated in the
exercise.
Since our last arcle, the Science Department has been very busy. Our Year 11 students ventured
across the river and into the Daintree Rainforest for their Unit 3 Biology Field Trip. The purpose of this
trip is to gain experience in the field in terms of sampling and recording data about our ecosystems
and exploring the factors affecng their survival. A big thank you to the Daintree Discovery Centre,
JCU’s Daintree Rainforest Observatory (DRO) and Daintree Ice-cream Company for the role they
played in our Field trip. We are privileged to have such wonderful resources right on our doorstep.
The students couldn’t stop talking about the catering at the DRO and were so glad that they didn’t
have to cook for themselves. The last day of the Field Trip saw the students dragging the teachers out
of the mangroves and telling them to hurry up as they were chomping at the bit to get to the
Daintree Ice-cream Company!
The Year 7 Science students have also been out in the field with an excursion to the Cairns Aquarium and
Cairns Museum. The trip helped students to gather informaon and data for their assignment this term.
As this goes to print they are busy finishing off their informaon posters about threats to our Coral Reef.
It was the first me we got to visit the Museum and it was great to learn about the history of the reef.
What’s happening in the Lab @ Mossman SHS
Thank you to all of the staff for organising the trip and
making sure everyone made it home safe and sound.
Our Year 11 Chemistry students have been busy praccing traons which has
been a definite learning curve. Ask any of them and they will describe in detail
the aggravaon of missing the equivalence point by one drop!
It has been another great year in science and we look forward to 2021 and all of
the scienfic adventures it will bring.
Yours in Science,
Mrs Zahnow (HOD Science/Agriculture/Performing Arts)
