STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION On this Seventh Sunday of Easter, most Catholics in the United States also celebrate the Solemnity of the  Ascension of the Lord. Traditionally, Ascension  Thursday occurred 40 days after Easter (May 5 this year); however, most dioceses in the U.S. have transferred this Holy Day of Obligation to the Sunday following it, which this year is today.  

Christ’s Ascension is  important to us. It is one of our core beliefs, to the  extent that when we profess our faith at Mass, regardless which Creed we use, we declare, “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.” To deny Christ’s Ascension is to deny His Resurrection. Before His Ascension, which is described in our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus tells His followers, “…you will be  baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  

We, too, have been baptized and imbued with the Holy Spirit. This Third Member of the Holy Trinity is the  aspect of God that lives and empowers each of us. We may think that the Holy Spirit has more work to do among those who do not believe, but there is also  considerable work to be done among those of us who do believe. We are called to serve; we are called to  discipleship; we are called to lives of stewardship; we are reminded of that in all of today’s readings.  

In his homily on the Ascension of Christ last year, Pope Francis said, “The Ascension tells us He is with God the Father, where He always intercedes in our favor.”

REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL En este séptimo domingo de Pascua, la mayoría de los católicos de Estados Unidos también celebran la  solemnidad de la Ascensión del Señor.  Tradicionalmente, los jueves de la Ascensión se produjo 40 días después de Pascua (5 de mayo de este año); Sin embargo, la mayoría de las diócesis de los EE.UU. han transferido este día de precepto para el  domingo después de ella, que este año es hoy en día.  

Ascensión de Cristo es  importante para nosotros.  Es una de nuestras creencias  fundamentales, en la medida en que cuando profesamos nuestra fe en la misa, sin im‐portar lo que Creed usamos, declaramos, "subió a los cielos y está sentado a la  diestra del Padre." Negar la Ascensión de Cristo es negar su resurrección. Antes de su ascensión, que se describe en la primera lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, Jesús les dice a sus seguidores: "... ustedes serán bautizados con el Espíritu Santo."  

Nosotros, también, hemos sido bautizados y imbuidos del Espíritu Santo. Este tercer miembro de la Trinidad es el aspecto de Dios que vive y da poder a cada uno de nosotros. Podemos pensar que el Espíritu Santo tiene más trabajo que hacer entre aquellos que no creen, pero también hay mucho trabajo por hacer, entre los que sí creen. Estamos llamados a servir;estamos  llamados a ser discípulos; estamos llamados a una vida de la administración; nos recuerda que en todas las lecturas de hoy.

Mission Circle 

Mission Circle needs gently used clothes for the Casa Eudes Fashion Show in May. Here’s your chance to clean out your closets and help the girls’ home in  Tijuana at the same time. Just donate your used clothes, shoes, purses, jewelry, and other accessories. After the show the clothes will go to the thrift shop that helps support the home. We’re collecting  everything from little girls’ clothes to teen‐age and adult styles. Please put your donations in the collection box in the back of the church and label them “Fashion Show”. Thanks so much!  

May is Mental Health Month   

DID YOU KNOW... The magnitude of mental illness in this country is  staggering. According to the Surgeon General, one in every four Americans experiences a mental disorder in any given year and half of all Americans have such  disorders at some time in their lives.According to the National Institute of Mental Health, (NIMH), an  estimated 26.2% of adults aged 18 and older, nearly 63 million people, will suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. Schizophrenia affects 1% of the population, three million people in the U.S.  Depression is the leading cause of disability, and bipolar disorder, also known as manic‐depressive illness, is a brain disorder. These illnesses of the brain affect all of us, regardless of age, gender, economic status or ethnicity.  

Mental illness affects the mind, body and spirit. It is a real, common and treatable illness. Mental illnesses are far more common than cancer, diabetes, heart  disease or arthritis.  

Our faith communities can be an important part of the recovery process through education, support and by helping individuals and families feel part of a caring community. Making empathetic statements that  convey understanding and compassion rather than  exhibiting fear or judgment can facilitate  communication.

Our Prayer We pray for knowledge dispelling fear and ignorance about serious mental illness.

We ask for collective understanding that the walls of stigma and labels must be broken down through  education and advocacy.  

We pray for healing, better treatment and steadier  recovery for men, women, and children living with a mental illness.   

We pray for Faith and Hope; that we might be an  outstretched arm and a listening ear for those who feel no one cares.                                         ~ Amen

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary.  We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.  The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world.  Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

The Tomorrow Project is a Catholic Charities  job‐readiness program for homeless and low income women.  The women produce delicious and nutritious food products, based on exclusive recipes developed by award winning San Diego chefs.  Our vegetarian based products, perfect for simple Lenten suppers, will be available for sale today. Stop by after Mass, meet some of the program participants and do some shopping.  Donations are always welcome.  For more information, check out the website at

We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy.

We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and  compassion.  

We remember mothers. grandmothers, and  great‐grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.
