A very blessed Mother's Day to all of our moms who imitate the sacrificial love of Christ by serving God and their families, often in a very hidden way. The Christian mother is the heart of the home in the sense that she connects the lives of the persons of the family and nurtures not only their union with each other but also their relationship with God. The mother's relationship with the husband precedes her bond with the children, and the child's relationship with the mother precedes the child's relationship with their father. We owe our mothers a debt of gratitude for their sacrificial love and for teaching us so many things about how to live a Christian life and how to serve life as a Christian. May we, their sons and daughters, honor them with profound love and respect. During the month of May we also remember Mary, the Mother of Christ, who is also our spiritual mother. When we are baptized, we are adopted by God the Father and

become His children. We are in-serted into the Body of Christ, a body which has a mother – Mary. One way we can honor Our Lady is by making a pilgrimage to a shrine dedicated to her, or even visiting a simple image or outdoor statue. Normally we make an in-tention for a pilgrimage, to honor Our Lady and pray for a special need for our self, for a member of

our family or parish, or some other need. We can pray part of the rosary on the way to our place of pilgrimage, part of the rosary there, and the remainder of the rosary on the way home. It is a good custom to invite someone to go with us, perhaps someone with whom we are doing apostolate work and helping to grow in the faith. A wonderful opportunity would be to attend the pilgrimage I will lead to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Emmits-burg, MD on May 25. A bus will take us there and we have arranged for box lunches to be eaten at the seminary were many of our priests prepare to serve in our diocesan parish-es. We also will have a tour of the seminary. Please see our website for more details. Don't forget to remember your mothers, both living in deceased, in our Mother’s Day novena of Masses beginning today. Also remember that all are invited to the celebration of my 25th anniversary of ordination as a priest of Jesus Christ. I will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 11:30 a.m. next Sunday, the Feast of Pentecost, May 15. Father Bill Saun-ders will be the guest homilist and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas will sponsor a reception in the Lyceum imme-diately following Mass. Please come if you can and be as-sured of my prayers for you and for more vocations to the holy priesthood from our wonderful parish.

Our student is a bright 17-year-old young man from Lithuania who loves his studies and playing basketball with his friends. His current host family has taken in a sick relative, leaving him without a place to stay. He hopes to remain in Alex-andria and finish his senior year here. If you are able to host him for the summer (May-July) or the upcoming school year, or know someone who is, contact Fr. Ed Bresnahan at [email protected] or Neil Berkman at [email protected] or 443.386.6656. Finan-cial reimbursement is available.

For more information on the breakfast or to register for the event, go to: www.catholicprayerbreakfast.org or email: [email protected].

BISHOP COMMENTS ON PORNOGRAPHY CRISIS In a recent commentary posted at First Things, Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde encourages everyone to make an “examination of conscience” with regard to the “public health crisis” of pornography. He writes: “If we stand back, I fear we will be complicit in handing further victories to por-nographers and sex traffickers and those who would rather make our children ‘guinea pigs’ in a lucrative $95 billion-a-year industry.” The full commentary is online at http://www.firstthings.com/blogs/firstthoughts/2016/04/confronting-the-public-health-crisis-of-pornography.

PRO-LIFE RIGHTS AT RISK The Virginia Catholic Conference has issued a call to action to protect the rights of pro-life heath care workers. The agency warns: “Increasingly, the conscience rights and religious liberty of American workers are threat-ened.... In particular, health care workers who reject abortion are facing increasing pressure.” Please contact and urge your Representative in Congress to support H.R. 4828, the Conscience Protection Act of 2016. Our faith acknowledges as sacred the right to act in accord-ance with one’s conscience and refuse to participate in moral evils such as abortion. For more information, go to http://www.vacatholic.org.
