History:TheMontereyPeninsula’sloveaffairwithworld-classracingtracesitsbeginningstotheinauguralrunningofthePebbleBeachRoadRacesin1950.ThosesportscareventsquicklyoutgrewthepublicroadsoftheDelMonteForestandabeautifulnewroadracingfacilitywasbornonNovember9,1957.

Sincethen,Montereyhasbeenvisitedbysomeofthemostprestigiousracersinhistory:RogerPenske,DanGurney,ParnelliJones,KennyRoberts,BobbyRahal,WayneRaineyandValentinoRossitonameafew.Thelate1960sand70’smayberememberedasthe“Can-AmYears,”butitwasalsothedebutofTransAm,IMSAandAMAmotorcycles.CARTIndyCarracingandGrandPrixMotorcyclingputtheirstamponthetrackinthe80sand90s.Inthe2000s,thehugeevolutionofMotoGPcreatedaphenomenalglobalfollowingforthetrack.

Current:Today,MazdaRacewayLagunaSecahostssixworld-classraceweekendseachseasonwitheliteroadrac-ingseriesfromaroundtheworldvisitingtheMontereyPeninsulaeveryyear.

The Corkscrew:Whilethetrackisafavoriteofracersandfansworldwide,manyfocusononespecificsection–officiallyTurns8and8Aor,morecommonly,TheCorkscrew.

TheCorkscrewisone-of-a-kindinmotorsportsandhereiswhatmakesthehard-left,hard-rightcombinationsospectacular:

AttheapextoTurn8(thelefthanderandentrytoTheCorkscrew),theelevationchangeisa12%drop.

BythetimearacecarreachestheapexofTurn8A(therighthander),theelevationisatitssteepest–an18%drop.

TheCorkscrewdrops59feetbetweentheentranceofTurn8totheexitofTurn8A–theequivalentofa5½storydrop–inonly450feetoftracklength.
