T HE recent Paris MotorShow proved two things fuel-efficient vehicles areoming more popular and car

mpanies are targeting families.Land Rover, for example, usedis to springboard its newcovery Sport model into theket.

Not a replacement for therent Discovery or even theelander, the Discovery Sportstand-alone model and ised on the Ranger Rover Evoqueform.Although its size is similar toHonda CR-V or Kia Sportage,d Rover still manages toeeze in a third-row seat at thek meant for children belowyears old. This 5+2 premium

mpact SUV shows just howd Rover wants to cater toilies.

The British are not the onlys launching family-friendlyicles. The Swedes unveiledreplacement for the highlyular Volvo XC-90, the new-90. This is arguably the rstmium full-sized seven-seatV that started the crazethe SUV as a family carrier.

The replacement promisesmore than just good looks it hasbetter creature comfort and a hostof fuel-efficient engines.

Renault also made history as itrevealed the latest generation ofthe worlds rst MPV the RenaultEspace.

With its ultra-modernlook, the Espace seats

seven and as expectedfrom Renault, a fullve-star Euro NCAPcrash test result inaddition to all theamenities a familyrequires from an MPV.

    Closer to home,Honda launched the

    seven-seat Mobilio

    during the Jakarta Motor Showrecently.

The largest variant from its Jazz/City modular platform, theMobilio even runs on the same1.5L iVTEC drivetrain that thesedan and hatchback are using. This saves Honda a lot of moneyand the savings is passed downto the people as the modernMPV can be priced a lot lower slightly more than RM100,000 inIndonesia.

The Mobilio is a seven-seatMPV that looks more like theStream MPV. It is targeted on theAsean region and may soon beavailable in Malaysia.

Apart from those seven-seatexamples, the cars are getting

more and more family oriented.Local players such as Perodua andProton are also jumping on thebandwagon.

The new Perodua Axia is theperfect example of how a productcan evolve for the benet of thepeople. The Axia is bigger, runson a larger 1.0L engine, comeswith two front airbags inall its variants and mostimportantly, hasmore family-friendlyfeatures.

The bigrear seathas Isoxanchoragefor baby seats,

    A family affair

the boot is larger than the Myviand the cabin has more elbow, head and knee room. A familyof ve can still t in and feelcomfortable.

The Axia also has a lot ofcup holders, bag hooks and theworlds rst snatch theft deterrentdevice where you can secure yourhandbag or backpack to the frontpassenger seat.

Proton, on the other hand, has its new Iriz hatchback toshowcase its new direction.

The design has been betteraccepted by the public and theengines have VVT technology toprovide more power and betterfuel economy.

There is also plenty of storagespace in the cabin and canspaciously seat ve adults. Protontakes the technology route withthe Iriz as it provides three USBports for the users an audio USBport and two more are chargerswith 1.0A and 2.1A. Users shouldkeep in mind that the 2.1A chargercan damage the devices batteryif it is used to charge the normalsmartphones.

Accommodating families is thebig business now and this guidewill help you learn the manyoptions that are now available inthe market.

Points to consider when buying an MPVA MULTI-PURPOSE vehicle (MPV) isnot really a cheap purchase. Buyingan MPV is akin to buying a house onwheels because it will be ferrying yourentire family from point A to point B.

With the market getting moresaturated by the day, car companiesuse different angles to skew buyers intobuying their products. Below are somefeatures a good MPV must have.

From left: Kamal Affendi Ismail, Sazali Jamali and Syaiful Bahari Ahmad.

EDARAN Tan Chong Motorsbecame the rst company inMalaysia to launch a hybrid MPV.

The Serena S-Hybrid, launchedlast year, is not only the rsthybrid MPV in the country, it

is also the rst tall-body MPVoffered for approximatelyRM150,000.

If you are wondering if amild hybrid version is as goodas a hybrid, here are what someowners from the Serena S-HybridOwners Group have to say.

    All about space

This car is Sazali Jamalisrst MPV and he loves tall bodyvehicles. Unsurprisingly though,he still drives his souped-upPerodua Kenari.

With three children and hisparents in-law to ferry around,Sazali and his wife decided that

they needed an MPV and Sazalifell in love with the Serena at rstsight.

I love its spacious interior andthe Smart Multi Centre Seat thatcan slide up and down the rstand second row of seats, he says.

The car also has conservativefuel consumption.

Sazali used RM70 worth offuel (half its fuel tank) in histravel from Sungai Petani to Johor

Baru, an approximate distanceof 870km, at an average speed of110kph.

However, Sazali dislikes thefact that the MPV does not comewith a spare tyre and the sidewind effect caused by the tall bodyof the MPV.

    TheS-Hybridclan

    The green factor

With four children to pack intoone car, Syaiful Bahari Ahmadneeded the space of an MPV.

The Serena is his rst MPVand the fact that it was a hybridexcited him, making it the main

reason he chose the Serena.I love the fuel economy

and the CVT transmission is sosmooth, he says.

He adds that the service costfrom Edaran Tan Chong Motorsis fair and the experience ofbeing a Serena owner has been

The SerenaS-Hybrid, launchedlast year, is notonly the firsthybrid MPV in thecountry, it is alsothe first tall-bodyMPV offered forapproximatelyRM150,000.

pleasant. Syaiful is also impressedwith the cars Smart Multi CentreSeat feature.

    A good choice

Kamal Affendi Ismail and hiswife Wan Nurazila Wan Abdul

Aziz owned a Hyundai Trajetbefore the Serena and they gaveseveral reasons for buying thehybrid MPV.

The features that attractedthem were the Serenas cabinspace, its exible seats, fueleconomy and performance.

They believe that Nissancan improve the cars ride andhandling and solve the MPVs lackof a spare tyre.

SpaceThere is no substitutefor space. If you needto ferry more than fivepassengers, take intoaccount the luggagespace. People oftentravel with luggage somake sure the MPV hasenough storage space.

SeatsHow many seats do you require? Some MPVs offer up to sevenseats but the fact is, the small-sized MPVs usually offer 5+2seating capacity where +2 meansthe third row is fit for children.

FlexibilitySeating configuration is an important factor. Some MPVs can fold the third row into the floor oron to the side, allowing for a bigger cargo space. Agood example is the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid andProton Exora. Some MPVs do not provide such afeature and this limits your cargo size.

Amenities Isofix is good but do you have an Isofix-equippedbaby seat? Things such as cup holders, hold-allbins, bags hooks and 12V socket plus USB portsare also important. Certain MPVs can seat eightpeople but only comes with a 12V charger. Anair-conditioning system with dual blowers willhelp make things cooler but is an extra loadto the engine, which translates to higher fuelconsumption.

Engine MPVs are not really small and are oftenloaded with passengers. That is why when

you test drive an MPV, always drive with thenumber of people you will be ferrying. AllMPVs feel powerful when there are only twopassengers on board but that will changeonce you have more passengers. Try drivingup a hill and monitor its performance. If youare okay with it, proceed. If not, there aremany new MPVs with powerful engines thatare able to provide good fuel economy.

LooksYou must find the exteriorof your MPV aestheticallypleasing. Likewise the interiormust also be pleasant to theeyes because you will spendmore time inside than outside.

Fun Most MPVs are now based on carplatforms, which means you canexpect them to drive like cars.Samples such as Peugeot 5008,

Honda Stream, Ford S-Max andothers prove that an MPV can stilldrive well. The new Odyssey uses itsown chassis but Honda has made ita sportier one, which drives reallywell. However, you should bear inmind that it does not mean youshould take the corners like a sportscar while having your entire familyin the MPV.

LayoutSome MPVs look big from theoutside but are small on theinside. Some car companiesknow how to utilise the

limited space inside, making ita spacious vehicle despite itssmaller size. The seats havesmart functions too, whichmay suit your preference. Agood example is the kurakiriseat in the Mazda5, whichfolds flat when not in use.

Entertainment systemThis is a good feature to haveand some MPVs do come

with an LCD screen with DVD/USB capability for the rearoccupants. Those with childrenwill attest that a screen playinga movie is definitely better thana pacifier.

Spare tyreDo not be surprisedto hear that someMPVs do not have aspare tyre because themanufacturer wants tolighten the car for betterfuel economy.

Overcoming hair and scalp disordersCONGESTED hair follicles affect men andwomen of all ages. Build-up of excesskeratin within hair follicles prevents sebumoutow.

It hardens over time and occupies thehair follicles while holding on to hairs thatare in their resting phase, preventing newhair from growing.

It also causes hair thinning due to follicleshrinkage. Clogged pores also prevent thefollicles from breathing. This eventuallylowers the scalp immunity and leads tomalnutrition of the hair root.

Hair becomes lifeless and eventually falls

off, leaving the scalp infected and aky withdandruff. This problem can only be solved via

treatment from reliable hair care centres. The common hair and scalp problemsassociated with congestion include asensitive scalp, dandruff, thinning andgreying hair.

    Advanced Follicle Technology

101 Hair Care is a pioneer hair carecentre and its signature treatment, theAdvanced Follicle Technology (AFT)specically targets the root cause in hairand scalp disorders at different stages.

Coupled with acupuncture massages andherbal essences, this treatment restores thehealthy function of hair follicles, roots and

scalp.AFT is a customised treatment consistingof four major steps deep cleansing, prevention, hair growth stimulation andstrengthening. The order varies on a case-by-case basis.

The most crucial step in AFT is deepcleansing, which removes excess sebum, dead skin cells, regulates sebum secretion, and removes follicle congestion. It resultsin clearer scalp, improved oil balance andreduced sensitivity.

The next step is to prevent the hair rootsfrom entering a resting stage prematurely. It balances sebum secretion and ensureseffective absorption of tonic to nourish hairroots.

Less hair fall and clearer follicles will beevident after this step.

The growth stimulation step enhancesmicrocirculation to the scalp and ensuresnutrient and oxygen delivery to follicles toenhance hair growth and hair texture.

The nal step strengthens existing andnew hair roots. It results in healthier hairtexture, and stronger, thicker and longer

hair growth. 101 Hair Cares Acupuncture PointMassage technique, paired with AFT, proveseffective in treating clogged follicles andimproving blood circulation to enhance theabsorption of herbal essences.
