Your mobile device is designed to resist damage fromexposure to certain rugged conditions. However, avoidprolonged or extreme exposure to those conditions. To
help protect your mobile device, always make sure thebattery compartment and any connector covers areclosed and secure, and observe the followingprecautions:

1. Make sure your SIM card is in place.

3. Press and hold End/Power" for two seconds toturn the phone on.
If your phone is activated, it will turn on, search forservice, and display the home screen.

Your SIM Card
Locating the SIM Card
Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a smallcard inserted into the SIM card holder within yourphone below the battery.
If no SIM card came with your phone, contact NextelCustomer Service at 1-800-639-6111.
Most users will never need to remove or insert the SIMcard. However, if it becomes necessary, follow the
instructions in Removing and Inserting the SIM Cardon page 3.
Tip: If your phone screen is locked, drag the onscreenStretch to unlock button to the right to display the homescreen.
Note: Your phones battery should have enough charge foryour phone to turn on and find a signal, set up yourvoicemail, and make a call. You should fully chargeyour battery as soon as possible. See Charging theBattery on page 7 for details.

Removing and Inserting the SIM Card
To remove your SIM card:
1. With your phone powered off, slide the batterydoor latch on the side of the phone down. Whileholding the latch down, lift and remove the batterydoor.
Important: The SIM card is designed for optimal Contactsstorage and feature use. For Nextel SIM cardcompatibility information, visitwww.nextel.com/sim.
In some cases, Contacts and Groups may not be
accessible if you move your SIM card to anotherphone. Contacts and Groups created with yourMOTOROLA i1 may not be readable by an olderiDEN SIM-based phone.
Note: Your MOTOROLA i1 Contacts are managed and storedon your phone rather than on the SIM card. If you areusing a SIM card from a previous phone, you canimport your existing contacts from the SIM card to yourMOTOROLA i1 using the SIM Manager. Likewise, you
can export your phones Contacts to your SIM card.See Import and Export Contacts on page 88 fordetails.
Important: To avoid losing information stored in your SIMcard, do not remove it from your phone unlessabsolutely necessary.

2. Open the memory card slot cover and slide in thememory card until it clicks into place.
3. Close the memory card slot cover.

Battery and Charger
Nextel-approved and Motorola-approved batteries andaccessories can be found at Sprint Stores or throughMotorola. You may order online at www.nextel.com or bycalling 1-866-866-7509.
Your phones Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery allows you torecharge it before it is fully drained.
When the battery reaches 5% of its capacity, yourphone makes a sound and displays a message. Whenthere are approximately two minutes of talk time left, thephone sounds an audible alert and then turns off.
WARNING: Use only Nextel-approved or Motorola-approvedbatteries and chargers with your phone. Thefailure to use a Nextel-approved or Motorola-approved battery and charger may increase the
risk that your phone will overheat, catch fire, orexplode, resulting in serious bodily injury, death,or property damage.

Installing the Battery
1. With your phone powered off, slide the batterydoor latch on the side of the phone down. Whileholding the latch down, lift and remove the batterydoor.
2. Insert the battery into the opening, making sure theconnectors align. Gently press down to secure thebattery.
3. Replace the battery door, pressing down firmly onit to ensure it is secured properly.
Note: Long backlight settings, searching for service, vibratemode, browser use, and other variables may reducethe batterys talk and standby times. See Battery Tipson page 24 for more details on extending battery life.
Tip: Watch your phones battery level indicator and charge the
battery before it runs out of power.

Removing the Battery
1. Make sure the power is off so that you dont loseany stored numbers or messages.
2. Remove the battery cover and lift the battery toremove it.
Charging the Battery
Charge your battery as soon as possible so you canbegin using your phone.
Always use a Nextel-approved or Motorola-approveddesktop charger, travel charger, or vehicle power
adapter to charge your battery.
Using the Phone Charger
Plug the flat end of the charger into the phonesmicro USB connector and the other end into thewall socket connector. Plug the wall socketconnector to an electrical outlet.
With the approved Li-Ion battery, you can recharge thebattery before it becomes completely run down.
WARNING: Do not handle a damaged or leaking battery asyou can be burned.

Turning Your Phone On and Off
Turning Your Phone On
Press and hold End/Power" for approximatelytwo seconds.
As your phone connects to the network, you see aconnecting message. Your phone may require you toenter identifying information to use it or to accessspecific features.
Turning Your Phone Off
Press and hold End/Power" to open the Power Keymenu, where you can turn off the phone (Power off), orturnAirplane mode or Silent mode on or off.
Sleep and Wake Up
To conserve your battery, preventaccidental touches, or when youwant to wipe smudges off yourtouchscreen, put the touchscreen to
sleep by pressing Screen Lock#
ontop of the phone. To wake up thetouchscreen, press Screen Lock# again and thendrag to the right to unlock the screen.
Activating Your Phone
If you purchased your phone at a Nextel Store, it isprobably activated and ready to use.
If your phone is not activated, please call NextelCustomer Service at 1-800-639-6111 from any otherphone.
When you power up your phone the first time, itperforms a series of security checks. For example, it
verifies the phone is Nextel-approved and the correctSIM card is installed. If you dont pass the securitychecks, your phone displays messages and screen

Setup Wizard
The first time you turn on your phone, a setup wizardappears and helps you get started.
1. (Optional) If you want to change the primarylanguage used by your phone, touch Changelanguage and then touch a language.
2. Touch Start on the bottom right side of the screen.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the
wizard. To skip any steps or to proceed aftercompleting a step, touch Next.
Set up your Wi-Fi connection.
Sign in to your existing Google Gmail account.
If you dont have a Google account, you cancreate one using the wizard.
Set up additional email accounts, such as POP3,IMAP, or Microsoft Exchange.
Import contacts from your SIM card.
Select your keyboard type.
4. Touch Done to exit the setup wizard.
Tip: Remember to write down your user name and password,and keep them in a safe place.
Tip: To type information in any of the setup steps, touch the
text field to display the keyboard. To switch from portrait(vertical) to landscape (widescreen), turn the phonecounter-clockwise.

Setting Up Voicemail
All unanswered calls to your phone are automaticallytransferred to your voicemail, even if your phone is inuse or turned off. Therefore, it is recommended that youset up your voicemail and personal greeting as soonas your phone is activated.
1. Using your MOTOROLA i1, call your wireless phonenumber.
2. Follow the system prompts to:
Create your passcode.
Record your name announcement.
Record your greeting.

Account Passwords
With Nextel service, you enjoy unlimited access to yourpersonal account information and voicemail account.To ensure that no one else has access to yourinformation, you need to create passwords to protectyour privacy.
Account Username and Password
If you are the account owner, you will create an accountusername and password when you sign on towww.nextel.com. (Click Need to register for access? to getstarted.) If you are not the account owner (if someoneelse receives the bill for your service), you can get a
sub-account password at www.nextel.com.
Voicemail Password
You will create your voicemail password (or passcode)when you set up your voicemail. See Setting UpVoicemail on page 10 for more information on yourvoicemail password.
Note: Voicemail Passcode: It is strongly recommended thatyou create a passcode when setting up your voicemailto protect against unauthorized access. Without apasscode, anyone who has access to your phone isable to access your voicemail messages.

The home screen extends beyond what you see on theinitial screen to give you more room for addingshortcuts, widgets, and more. Flick the home screenleft and right to see more panels or to add widgets orshortcuts.
Widgets

Shortcuts
To add shortcuts to the home screen, touch(theApplications tab), and then touch and hold theshortcut you want. When the display switches tothe home screen, drag the short cut to an empty
space. You can also press Menu/>Add >Shortcuts.
Apps (Applications)
Your phone comes with some apps (applications)already installed, and you can download and installmore. To open an app, touch its icon.
Applications Tab
All the apps on your phone,including the apps that came withyour phone and any youdownload and install, are listed inalphabetical order in yourApplications menu.
Touch (theApplications tab) at the bottom ofthe home screen to open the app menu.
Running Multiple Apps
Your phone can run multiple apps simultaneously, sothere is no need to close one app before opening
another one.
To open a new app while another is already running,press HomeX to display the home screen. Touch
and touch the app you want to open. To switchfrom one running app to another, press and holdHomeX to display a list of currently running apps,and then touch the one you want. The list displays upto six running apps.
Search
You can launch a Google search directly from thehome screen.
1. Press Menu/> Search or flick the home screento the left to display the search widget.
2. Touch the text field to display the keyboard, and
enter your search term.

Draw on your screen to get to your favorite apps. Toopen My Sign, touch > My Sign.
Draw the sign for the action youwant. For example, draw a V to
go to voicemail.To see which actions are alreadyassigned to gestures, pressMenu/>List Gestures. Youllalso see several gestures thatare unassigned.
To assign an action to a gesture,press Menu/> List Gestures,touch an unassigned gesture,and then touch an app from thelist.

Screen Timeout
To change how long your phone waits before thescreen goes to sleep automatically, touch >

Swype Text Entry
Swype lets you enter a word with one continuousmotion. To enter a word, just drag your finger over theletters.
Swype Typing Tips
To enter apostrophes in common words (like Ill),drag through the n as though it was an apostrophe.
To enter several symbols, touch SYM.
To correct a word, double-tap it. Swype shows a
small menu of other word options. Swype might alsoshow a menu if it cant guess your word.
If Swype doesnt know a word, you can still touch theletter keys to enter it. Swype remembers, so next timeyou can just drag over the letters.
Text Entry Settings
When you use the touchscreen keyboard, your phonesuggests words from your dictionary and chosenlanguage.

Your phone is like a small computer, giving you accessto a lot of information and apps, with a touch display.Depending on what you use, that can take a lot ofpower.
To conserve battery life between charges: Reduce recording or watching videos, listening to

Battery Cool Down

in Cool Down mode, only emergency calls can bemade.

Using a Remote Direct Connect Button
If you are using a headset or other optional accessorywith a remote Direct Connect button, you can use theremote Direct Connect button for phone calls, DirectConnect calls, and Group Connect calls.
For phone calls, use the remote Direct Connect buttonto answer calls, switch between calls, and end calls.Hold the remote Direct Connect button for less thantwo seconds to answer calls and switch between calls.Hold the remote Direct Connect button for more thantwo seconds to end calls.
For Direct Connect calls and Group Connect calls, usethe remote Direct Connect button as you would the
Direct Connect button on your phone.

Placing a traditional wireless phone call from yourMOTOROLA i1 is as easy as making a call from anylandline phone.

Emergency Calls
Your phone supports emergency calling. Emergencyphone calls can be made even when your SIM card isblocked or not in your phone.
Touch Dialer, enter911 and press
Talk` to be connected to an emergencyresponse center. If you are on an active call, youmust end it before calling 911. If your phone islocked, touch the Emergency call button at thebottom of the screen.
When you make an emergency call, your phones GPSEnabled feature can help emergency servicepersonnel find you, if you are in a location where your
phone's GPS antenna has established a clear view ofthe open sky and your local emergency responsecenter has the equipment to process locationinformation. In Call Options
Press Menu/ during a call todisplay a list of available in-callfeatures. To select an option,touch it. The following optionsmay be available:
Swap call to switch between toactive calls.
Merge call to initiate a three-way call.
Add call to place a second call.
End call to end the call.

Mute to mute your phones microphone. Touch Muteagain to unmute your phones microphone.

Important: Always report your location to the 911 operatorwhen placing an emergency call. Somedesignated emergency call takers, known asPublic Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) may notbe equipped to receive GPS location informationfrom your phone.
If you have not registered on the network,emergency calls cannot be placed while yourSIM card is in your phone.
If you are bringing your phone number to Nextelfrom your previous carrier, you may receive atemporary telephone number while your Nextelphone is being programmed with yourpermanent phone number. If you make a call to911 and the call fails, the 911 emergency
response center will not be able to call you backon your Nextel phone if in the meantime, yourNextel phone has been programmed with yourpermanent telephone number. If the call isdisconnected before location and details havebeen provided, call 911 again and advise that youwere disconnected. Tip: You can also press Speaker) to turn the speaker on

Saving a Phone Number

Phone Numbers With Pauses

Making Direct Connect Calls

3. Release the DC button to listen.
A Direct Connect call ends automatically after there isno activity on the call for several seconds.

Every Direct Connect number has three parts:
An area ID.
A network ID.
A member ID.
An asterisk separates each part (for example:999*999*9999). When you enter a number containingall three parts, you must separate them with asterisks.

Creating Groups in Contacts
1. Touch Contacts>Menu/>New group.
2. Touch the icon to the left of the entry names toselect the group members.

4. Scroll to the bottom of the entry and touch Done.

To add member to a Group stored in Contacts:

Starting a Call by Sending a Picture
You can start a call by choosing a stored picture fromthe Media Gallery.
To do this, you must have the recipients Direct Connectnumber and IP address stored in your Contacts.
To start a call by sending a picture:
1. Touch > Media Gallery> All Pictures.
2. Touch and hold a photo, then touch Share.
3. Touch DC, and touch DC contacts or DC call log.These names have Direct Connect numbers andIP addresses stored.
4. Select a name and press the DC button to sendthe picture.
5. When prompted, press the DC button to resume
the Direct Connect call.
Receiving a Picture
When someone sends you a picture using NextelDirect Send, your phone emits a tone or vibrates and amessage appears on the display asking you to acceptthe picture.
Pictures you receive are saved to your phones memoryand are accessible through the Media Gallery.

Sending My Info and Contact Information
When you send My Info or contact information usingNextel Direct Send, the information you send appearson the display of the receiving phone. After the call, the
information appears on that phones Call log list.
You can control what portion of the information in MyInfo is sent, and whether it is sent automatically in everyDirect Connect call or only when you choose to send it
The information your phone sends always includes MyName and Direct Connect.
It may include Line 1, Line 2, Direct Connect, and GroupID depending on the options provided by your serviceprovider and how you set your sending options.
The default setting is Line 1 only.
To change which fields are sent:
1. Touch > Settings >Call settings >Direct Connect settings > Sharing contact info >
Select info to share.
Note: The first time you accept a stored picture after turningthe phone on, the message Picture fees may applyappears and you are prompted to respond. Touch OKto accept the picture. Touch Cancel to cancel.
Tip: To stop the transmission before it is finished, touchCancel.
Note: When you send your contact information, certaininformation, such as street addresses or custom entries,chat addresses, organizations, and notes cannot beincluded.

A Talkgroup is a predetermined group of DirectConnect users, created by an account administrator.Talkgroups can contain up to 100 members.
Difference Between Group Connect andTalkgroup Calls
In a Group Connect call, you or another callerdetermines who can participate in the call. By contrast,participation in a Talkgroup is determined by anadministrator. Here are the ways Group Connect andTalkgroup calls differ.

Each message you create may contain the followingfields:

Attach one or more attachments. These may bepictures, ringtones, or audio files, including voicerecords that you create while creating the message.To add an attachment, press Menu/>Attach.

Receiving a Message
When you receive an MMS message, a messagenotification appears on the notification bar.
To view the message:
Drag the notification bar down from the top of thescreen and touch the message notification.
This icon appears on the display, reminding youthat you have a new message.

Navigating a Message
As you scroll through a message, numbers, emailaddresses, and Web addresses are highlighted.
Pictures and audio recordings are also highlighted.
Attachments
Messages may contain pictures or audio files asattachments.
If a message contains a picture or audio file as anattachment, touch the attachment to view the picture orplay the audio file.

Deleting
To delete messages:
1. Touch a message thread to open it.
2. Touch and hold a message and then touch Deletemessage.

To make a Talkgroup call to a Talkgroup ID in a message:

2. Touch the Talkgroup ID and then press Menu/>
JoinTalkgroup.3. Press the DC button.
Storing Message Information to Contacts
If a message you receive contains a phone number,Direct Connect number, Talkgroup ID, or an emailaddress in any of the fields, you can store thisinformation to Contacts.
1. View the message.
