Fitting rival for super saloonsjaguar
peugeot
THE XFR
THE 3008
NO PRIZES for guessing where theJaguar XFR’s main rivals will comefrom. Toppling the AMG E-Classesfrom Mercedes, BMW’s M5 andAudi’s RS6, will not be easy but forthe first time in a long time, Jaguarhas the ingredients to pull it off.
The XFR has a supercharged503bhp V8 engine which is a goodstart when your rivals are some ofthe world’s fastest saloons.
Maximum torque of 625Nm allthe way from 2,500rpm to5,500rpm is another bonus. Ithelps the big Jag cover the 0-60mph sprint in 4.7s and launchfrom 50mph to 70mph in just 1.9s.Top speed is limited to 155mph.
The role of the super saloon as ahalo product casting its divine lightdown on to less extreme models inthe range requires it to look thepart.
In the case of cars in the XFRclass, that means aggressive andpowerful but not too crass. Jaguarhad a great starting point with theXF’s beautifully flowing bodyworkbut the R needed greater purpose.
Spoilers and sill extensions lower
the car while the front grill itself isalso lower and wider with itschromed wire mesh finish.
The bonnet is punctuated bytwin louvered air intakes and therear has chromed tailpipes with amodest spoiler on the boot lid.
The all-important wheels arehuge 20 inch affairs and chunkysilver brake callipers can beglimpsed between their spokes.
Taking on the class leading supersaloons is a risky business. Fall evenslightly short on power, poise orprestige and your product is likelyto be unceremoniously swept asideby the Germanic juggernaut.
Jaguar’s XFR looks the modelmost likely to break into this rar-efied market where the partici-pants compete as much for brandkudos as they do for salesy.
The XFR has the attributes towin out but the battle could be ameans in itself for Jaguar as themore accessible XF models bask inthe range-topper’s reflected glory.

A FEW years back, it dawned on the major carmanufacturers that the public really liked 4x4vehicles. There was a corresponding explosionin the numbers of off-roaders both in theshowrooms and on the roads, followed by anentirely predictable backlash against them.
Recently it’s been looking like the publicdon’t like 4x4s that much. What they like iscertain characteristics only 4x4 vehicles couldoffer. The cross-over vehicle was born to deliverthese qualities, having distilled away the foiblesof the off-roader. Peugeot’s 3008, costing,£15,000 to £20,000, is just such a cross-overbut is it the car for you?
Peugeot is putting the best of its enginerange to work in the 3008. That means 2.0-
or Peugeot’s clever electronically-controlledclutchless system.
Next come the 2.0-litre options packing150bhp and 163bhp. The more powerful ofthese comes with a conventional six-speed auto-matic. Petrol buyers can take either the 120bhp1.6-litre VTi engine and its five-speed manualtransmission or step on to the turbocharged 1.6-litre THP which develops 150bhp.
The 3008 runs on the same underpinningsas the 308 hatch and its other spin-off models.Styling-wise, it employs a conventional hatch-back shape but its high nose, the beefy grilleand bumper combination and those flaredwheelarches provide the hint of SUV thatmarks the 3008 out as a cross-over.
Peugeot’s recent design efforts have splitopinion with the enormous yawning grille thatwas rolled out across the model range provingdistinctive but not always in an aesthetically
pleasing way. In moving away from this familyface, the 3008 is one of the best lookingPeugeots we’ve seen for a while.
The seating is higher than a normal hatch-back, mimicking one of the traits most popularwith buyers choosing compact 4x4 vehicles.
There’s also a large glazed area to assist fur-ther with visibility. An optional glass roof likethe one on the 308 SW estate can furtherincrease light making its way into the cabin.
Peugeot is proud of the air-conditioning sys-tem. It features an air-quality sensor that closesoff the inflow of air from outside the car ifhigh levels of pollution are detected, recalculat-ing the air that’s already inside.
Car buyers uncertain whether to plump for thehigh driving position and chunky looks of a 4x4or the handling composure and fuel economy ofa family hatchback could have their dilemmasolved at a stroke by the Peugeot 3008.
This cross-over model’s amalgamation ofqualities from two popular market sectorscould be what some people are looking for.
litre and 1.6-litre HDi diesels plus1.6-litre VTi and THP petrols. Ifwe take the diesel options first, there’s a 110bhp 1.6-litre unit atthe base of the range that’savailable with the standard six-speed manual gearbox.

FACTS
WHEN Toyota's original Yaris waslaunched, it was unquestionably thefinest supermini money could buy.
Times have changed, and to restoredominance, the latest Yaris, fromaround £9,000 and first shown at the2005 Frankfurt Show, has grown up.
First impressions are that Toyotahave taken the old Yaris and pluggedit into a garage forecourt airline. It'sbigger in every dimension andmarkedly more bulbous.
It's also way better in terms of per-ceived quality. The double-sealeddoors feel thicker and weightier andshut with a thunk rather than a clang. The unconventional fascia looksremoved from the supermini norm, with a 3D effect on the main display.
Despite its 11cm growth in overalllength, the Yaris is still shorter thanthe latest generation of larger super-minis such as the Fiat Grande Puntoand the Renault Clio.
Part of the reason why these cars
are so large is compliance withpedestrian impact legislation which isadding a few centimetres to the noseof many cars. The Yaris gets roundthis one by arcing the bonnet highover the unyielding mechanicals toprovide a deformable surface.
This means that despite beingshorter on the outside, the Yaris iscompetitive in terms of interior spaceand easy to park at the same time.
Fold the EasyFlat rear seats downand you're treated to the largeststowage area of any supermini. Thissystem allows the rear bench to besplit 60:40 and both sections to slideindependently. It's possible to trans-port long, bulky items withoutimpinging on a rear passenger'slegroom allowance.
Three petrol engines are available -a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit, a more
conventional 1.3-litre four-cylinderpowerplant and the 131bhp 1.8-litrerange topper.
Diesel buyers are catered for with a1.4-litre turbodiesel. In case you werewondering, the 1.0-litre unit is all-newbut the others have been carried overfrom the previous generation Yaris.
That's no bad thing, as the Yarisalways had some of the best enginesin its class.
For the time being, let's concen-trate on that three-pot 1.0-litre lump.Built in Japan, this engine will appealto buyers who are attracted by thecity credentials of the Yaris. With keenfuel economy, low inertia and lowemissions, it's a better choice than the
diesel for the urban sprawl and crawl.Marry that to Toyota's claim that theYaris has the tightest turning circle ofthe whole supermini set and you havea very agile and wieldy city scoot.
For the latest Yaris to succeed,Toyota need to communicate that thiscar has been redesigned from theground up. Failing that, many poten-tial buyers may pass it off as a faceliftof the old model and bypass theirToyota dealer on the way to a com-petitor. That would be a shamebecause the Yaris has a lot to offer.
The opposition have caught up andit's no longer a clear class leader, butit's still one of the most sensible pur-chases a supermini buyer can make.

WHEN you design a futuristic supermini, asNissan have done with their third generationMicra, you shouldn’t have to tamper with it toomuch. Nor have they - though some well judgedenhancements have, in recent times, improvedthe car’s showroom appeal.
They’re so subtle it’s doubtful if they’ll attracttoo many new buyers to the brand who weren’talready sold on the Micra’s cheeky good looks.
The first visual change to styling can be seenon the front grille which moves away from thechrome centre line over to a chrome surround, providing what Nissan hope is a cleaner look.
This continues with the front headlamps thatnow have a less profound profile to the parkingaid ‘bump’ that sits on the lens, making itsmoother and incorporating a light blue tint.
The sporty front bumper, seen on the 160SR,has now been installed on most models, whilethe B Pillar trim on the hatchback is no longercolour coded, giving an improved side profile.
Inside, there’s revised interior trim, an MP3jack socket and sports sculptured seats on mostmodels. Unless you go for the cheapest variant, you’ll also now find a Bluetooth hands free tele-phone system, a double DIN audio unit and anaudible speed limit warning fitted as standard.
Set your maximum speed setting by using thesteering wheel button and a bleep will sound asyou reach your desired limit; useful when goingthrough reduced speed areas.
Under the bonnet, it’s as you were. Threepetrol engines and one diesel option power theMicra, power outputs ranging from 65PS to110PS. The common rail 1.5-litre, eight valvefour cylinder turbo diesel - developed by Alliancepartner Renault - develops 86bhp.
Nissan’s CR family of petrol engines is availablein either 1.2 or 1.4-litre forms. The 1.2 is avail-able in two levels of tune developing 65 and80bhp respectively, while the 1.4 develops88bhp. All are 16 valve four cylinder all-alloyunits and comply with Euro IV emissions regula-
tions. The third petrol engine, also Euro IV-com-pliant, is a lightweight 1.6-litre which develops109bhp and powers the SR.
Customers browsing at their local Nissan storewill be able to select from various Micra lines inthe standard range: VISIA, ACENTA, TEKNA,ACTIVE LUXURY and SR. With all, there’s a
choice of three doors or (for a £650 premium)five. Alternatively, there’s the drop top C+C.
As long as you don’t place interior space atthe top of your priority list, the Micra deservesconsideration. In sacrificing space for style, it’lldisappear off the shortlists of some and ontothose of others. The fact the Micra has changed
from an old person’s car to one favoured byyounger buyers can only be good for Nissan, butthe figures need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Moving the mean purchasing age from 52.5years down to the mid 40s doesn’t make theMicra the supermini du jour for twentysomethingurban trendies but it’s in the right direction.

The Vauxhall Insignia marks the start of anew era for Vauxhall and there are plenty ofreasons for optimism.
The manufacturer has worked hard to broad-en the appeal of the Insignia beyond that of thefleet-favourite Vectra and it certainly looks tohave been successful.

This car is as sharp to drive as its Mondeo rivaland the clever FlexRide system gives it a realtechnological edge.
Overall, what’s crucial is that the basics of thiscar seem to work. The Insignia looks a verydesirable, cleverly designed package that willgive its rivals something to really think about.

SSeeeekkiinnggaatttteennttiioonnICONIC status is a tough thing to layclaim to when you're part of acomparatively recent and somewhatoversubscribed trend.
Almost every self-respectingmainstream car manufacturer has acompact SUV to peddle these daysand the explosion in these road-going4x4s has happened over a relativelyshort timeframe. Chevrolet's is calledthe Captiva and while iconic wouldbe stretching things, you could arguefor its Ikonic status – in special editionCaptiva Ikon guise that is.
The engine range kicks off inunspectacular style with a rather aged2.4-litre petrol engine then perks upconsiderably with the 2.0-litre VCDidiesel. Crucially to the Ikon'sprospects, it's front wheel-drive only, the decision to forgo the complex andweighty 4x4 system doing much tokeep costs down.
The petrol option has 133bhp andwill detain you for 11.5s while it zipsup to 60mph. The diesel has 150bhpand a 10.8s 0-60mph time which ishalf a second quicker than a four-
wheel-drive Captiva fitted with thesame engine.
The Captiva isn't one of these SUVsthat tries to tone down its styling in abid to look more like a conventionalcar and on the Ikon model thetraditional 4x4 accessories get evenmore extrovert.
The 20" alloy wheels are the realshowstoppers, they look quite a sizeshod with their low profile tyres, evenwhen encased by the Captiva'scavernous wheelarches. It's a goodjob the Ikon isn't four-wheel-drive asthese aren't the wheels to take alonga rocky track. The side steps donothing for ground clearance eitherand you could easily find yourselfretracing your steps in search of thechrome tail pipe after it's beenknocked off by a boulder. The CaptivaIkon is more for looking good aroundtown than showing its prowess out inthe wilds. There's even darkenedprivacy glass to deflect some of theattention the car's designed to get.
Based on the entry-level LS modelfrom the standard Captiva range, the
Ikon benefits from features such asair-conditioning, electric windows, remote central locking, electric doormirrors and a CD stereo with controlson the steering wheel. Even with theextra styling accessories valued at£3,000 that Chevrolet has added tothe car, it's still £1,000 cheaper thanan LS in petrol form and over £1,400less as a diesel.
In terms of fuel economy, Captivabuyers will get 31mpg from the petrolmodel or 37mpg from the dieselwhile emissions for the two enginesare 217g/km and 197g/km respective-ly. Most buyers will pick the oil-burner
even if it is considerably moreexpensive as a result of its superiorperformance and economy but it hasthe added benefit of being a moredesirable proposition on the usedmarket so residuals will be strong.
With its extrovert stylingaccessories, Chevrolet's Captiva Ikonwill get more than its fair share ofattention out on the road. This is acompact SUV but there's very littlethat's compact about it unless youcount the price which is over £1,000less than the standard entry-levelmodel despite over £3,000 worth ofequipment having been thrown in.

GIRLTALKwith June Neary
THE Dodge Journey is a large seven-seater MPV.
Not one of those five seat peoplecarriers with a couple of fold-awaychairs in the boot but a proper seven-seater with seven seats that you canfit seven fully-grown people in. Toachieve this kind of interior capacity, the designers have made it quite asize.
At close to five meters long, itlooked a daunting prospect as Iapproached it across the office carpark. The other thing to mention isthat the Dodge has a bit more road-presence than you’d expect from alarge MPV. It has the look of a 4x4about it with its chunky grille andflared wheelarches.
THE PRACTICALITIESIt’s the interior that Dodge Journey
buyers will be most interested in.Those seven seats all present a decentamount of space so long as you’renot intending to keep a pair of adultscooped up in the third row for anylength of time.
The all-important middle row is par-ticularly spacious. It can be split60/40, with each section able to slideindividually back and forth for moreflexibility.
Access to the rearmost seats is alsovery good with a tug on the lever onthe outside seats of the middle rowprompting them to fold and slideright forward, leaving plenty of room
to enter with dignity. Of course, withall three rows in place, baggage roomis at a premium, with only 303 litresavailable. If luggage is your priority, allof the seats can of course be foldedflat to present an extensive load floor
with 1914 litres of space. Thisincludes the passenger seat which canbe dropped down to further boostthe available volume or give parentsan unrestricted view to the little mon-sters in the back.
BEHIND THE WHEELThe Journey is propelled by one oftwo engines, a petrol or a diesel. The2.4-litre petrol option is nothing toget over-excited about and is includedlargely to deliver an attractive entry-
level price and to sate those who stillcan’t abide diesel. It has a respectable168bhp at its disposal but lacks themid-range strength of the 138bhp2.0-litre diesel. This is a pleasanterengine from a driving perspectivethan its petrol counterpart, though isa little noisier.
VALUE FOR MONEYPrices for the Journey look attractive, sitting in the £17,000 to £23,000bracket. That’s about 10 per cent lessthan obvious rivals. The old Americantactic of supplying lots of metal forthe money has obviously been centralto the thinking behind the vehicle.Equipment is hardly lacking eitherwith three-zone climate control, tyre-pressure sensors, a 6 CD stereo andelectric everything all coming as stan-dard. Another boon is the safety kitwhich includes ESP stability controland curtain airbags.
COULD I LIVE WITHONE?The Dodge Journey has a bit morecharacter about it than the majority oflarge MPV products and looks attrac-tively priced compared to its rivalstoo. It’s not the slickest package inthis sector in terms of build quality ordriving dynamics but it’s a big, honest,user-friendly car that’s well worthy ofyour consideration. Anything that canrender a long car journey with fourkids in the back any less traumaticgets my vote.

FACTSSO WHAT'S changed about the latestMazda6? Well, it's more spacious, 65mmlonger, 15mm wider, 5 mm taller with a50mm longer wheelbase than the firstgeneration model. It's also safer, morepractical, better built and, faster.
Chris Allen, founder and managingDdirector of the Chris Allen Garagesgroup, said: “The good news is that thediesel models deliver astonishing miles pergallon and far lower co2 emissions”.
The zoom-zoom tagline used on theMK1 model wasn't just an advertisingstrap: this genuinely was the first Mazdafamily car you could look forward to dri-ving. This has been an approach furtherdeveloped in the second generationmodel.
Mazda engineers have correctly identi-fied that driving experience is mainlyabout suspension, steering and transmis-sion.
Mr Allen added: ‘There's a fully inde-pendent suspension system for improvedride comfort and reduced road noise. Thehydraulic power steering set-up has beenreplaced with the Mazda RX-8 sports car'selectric system in order to achieve optimalsteering assistance at the widest number
of speed variations.”And the gearbox? There's a new six-
speed manual transmission that offers anespecially precise shift operation withbuilt-in positive stops for the extremes ofthe gearlever's movements.
Greater performance from engines likethe latest 2.5-litre petrol motor has led tothe need for more stopping power, so thelatest Mazda6 is fitted with larger frontbrake discs.
Mindful that rivals were getting larger,Mazda's designers knew they needed alarger cabin, yet the shape needed toretain the sharp sportiness of the originalversion. By and large, they've succeeded.
The windscreen is deeper and higher, creating a feeling of spaciousness actuallydelivered by a slightly wider body thatoffers occupants greater shoulder room.
Thanks to the longer wheelbase, kneeroom for the rear passengers is alsoincreased - by 13mm. In the rear, the60/40 split seatbacks fold forward with asimple, single movement (using Mazda'sneat karakuri folding system), presenting aflat luggage floor.
Prices range in the £15,000 to £20,000bracket, with saloons priced equally to
hatches but estates attracting around a£700 premium. The main trim choices areTS, TS2 and Sport, with an SL variant forthe top diesel and an entry-level S versionfor the petrol 1.8.
The 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines havebeen carried over with refinements fromthe old model that have led to 10%improvements in fuel economy and emis-sions. At the top of the range, there's a170ps 2.5-litre unit.
Mr Allen said: “Diesel buyers are bettercatered for with an impressive 2.2-litreunit offered in three states of tune -
125ps, 163ps and 185ps.”A significant safety boost is being pro-
vided for Mazda6 drivers with the intro-duction of Mazda's lane change 'RearVehicle Monitoring System' as standardfrom TS2 level upwards.
Company secretary of Chris AllenGarages Wendy Harper added: “This fullyautomatic active safety feature detectsand warns the driver of an approachingvehicle before he or she has a chance tomove across into a busy lane by mistake.”
This model will please existing ownersand surprise the ever increasing number of
customers who are taking a break fromother brands and trying out a Mazda fromChris Allen Garages.
The final word goes to Mr Allen: “Wecurrently have some very keen offers onnew Mazda but in many cases they arenot advertised because we’re saving themfor our loyal customers and thosemotorists who visit us on AmoundernessWay before the end of February.”
There you have it, award-winning motorcars, award-winning customer care and allfrom ecologically award-winning premises!

CCooooll aannddeeffffiicciieennttAT least 50 per cent of what makesup a good cabriolet is image. How itlooks, how you look in it, what it saysabout you and how many heads itcan turn on a trip down a typicalurban thoroughfare on a warm Julyafternoon.
People don’t buy cabriolets forpractical reasons, they buy cabrioletsas fashion statements, as tools forshowing off in. All of which kind ofmakes you wonder about Audi’s 3.0-litre TDI Cabriolet. Is it a bit tooefficient for its own good?
The A4 Cabriolet has got theimage stakes pretty much wrapped-up but what about its engine – the230bhp 3.0-litre TDI diesel?
Put simply, it’s an excellent unit, virtually as fast as the 3.2-litre V6 FSIpetrol engine and yet returningaverage fuel economy figures that aresuperior to the weedy entry-level 1.8-litre Turbo.
Better still, it’s packing 450Nm oftorque between 1,400 and 3,250rpmwhich is more than the 4.2-litre V8 inthe S4 cabriolet. This engine gives theA4 Cab effortless cruising ability, withvast waves of torque washing aroundthe mid-range to surge you throughovertaking manoeuvres and devour
the severest of inclines. It’s the perfectengine for a Cabriolet in many ways, relaxed and powerful but with goodfuel economy to inject a degree ofcommonsense that’s not usuallyprevalent in this sector of the market.
The 3.0-litre TDI’s problem is thatthose acutely image-consciouscabriolet buyers who are drawn tothe A4 Cabriolet probably won’twant to drive a diesel one.
You can sort of make a case for thecheaper 2.0-litre TDI, in that peoplewho can just squeeze into the A4Cabriolet’s financial ballpark may wellopt for the best fuel economy theycan get, thus clawing back a fewquid longer-term in running costs. The 3.0-litre TDI, though, is secondonly to the S4 in terms of price. That’s going to look expensive tomany, even though the engine’simpressive figures would appear tojustify the premium.
The interior is typically wellconstructed and the hood is foldedaway neatly and without fuss atspeeds of up to 20mph by holding a
switch next to the handbrake. Rearlegroom is fairly awful but the spaceprovided for those in the front is farmore like it.
There’s also a decent-sized bootwhen the hood’s up.
The ride is smooth as a cabriolet’sshould be, although the S-Linemodels do firm things up a touch forbuyers wanting a sportier experience. Most of the feedback that reachesthe driver comes through thesuspension as the steering feels quitedead but there’s plenty of scope topress-on and have some fun.
Given a money-no-object pick of all
the models in the A4 Cabriolet range,it’s hard to see beyond the 3.0 TDI -on an objective basis at least. The S4is just that little bit silly and the bigTDI is as quick or quicker than all theothers, without quite such prohibitivefuel consumption as the petrolchoices. This car is all about cool, however, and there will be those thatthink plumbing in an oil-burningengine tarnishes the ice cold aurawhich is its key selling point. Buyerswill have to make up their own mindsbut the 3.0TDI is an individualistchoice and that, in the end, couldactually be the coolest way to go.

ford
VVeerrssaattiillee ppeerrffoorrmmaanncceePLAYING catch up can sometimesprove very difficult. When themini-MPV market first boomed, Fordstood back and watched, confidentthat sales of these curious little boxeswould be a passing fad. Buyers wouldsoon realise that something Focusshaped or Mondeo sized made a farmore satisfactory alternative than thefrumpier lines of a mini-MPV.
They were wrong. Six years afterRenault popularised the genre withthe Scenic, Ford responded with theC-MAX.
To keep this car current, Ford haveupdated the car with sassier styling inrecent times but the essentials remainthe same.
There’s a choice of 1.6, 1.8 and2.0-litre power whether you opt fordiesel or petrol. It’s the 1.8-litre petrolcar that we take a look at here.Powered by a 125PS four-cylinderengine, it’s usefully quicker than carslike the 1.6-litre Volkswagen Touranagainst which it competes pricewiseand the engine is both smooth andblessed with a decent slug of torque -invaluable for hauling a fully ladenvehicle uphill. It will zip from standstillto 60mph in a respectable 10.6 sec-onds and keep going until it runs outof steam at 119mph.
Despite the impressive power andtorque figures churned out by the1.8-litre engine, it manages to returnsome very respectable economyfigures. A combined fuel consumptionfigure of 39.2 mpg makes it more
economical than its less powerful1.6-litre counterparts fromVolkswagen and Renault. Factor inCO2 figures of just 170g/km and itsounds like a winner already.
There is a caveat, though, and forsome buyers it will rule the C-MAXout of contention. Whereas theVolkswagen Touran can be specifiedwith seven seats and the RenaultGrand Scenic is also thus equipped, the C-MAX only offers room for five. This raises a perplexing question. Just
as the Ford Fusion has found littlefavour with buyers who couldn’t real-ly see what it offered over and abovea normal Fiesta, there may well be asignificant proportion of potential C-MAX customers who can’t see thepoint of a car that seats no morebodies than a cooking Focus hatch.
Ford’s marketing departmentremains utterly convinced that there’san untapped market for vehicles thatoffer five seats with MPV-style head-room and versatility but which still
offer keen driving dynamics andstyling that doesn’t resemble a down-sized burger van.
Think about how we use our carsfor a moment. Many of us rarely evenuse the back seats for anything butshopping bags and jackets. If you’vegot a family in tow, you may wellneed four or even five seats but if youseriously need seven seats, it makessense to go with the additional carry-ing capacity of a full sized MPV likeFord’s S-MAX or Galaxy models.
The C-MAX 1.8 is a worthycontender in the mini-MPV sector butit still faces an uphill battle. With abunch of established rivals and noseven seat option available, it willleave many buyers scratching theirheads in puzzlement. Let’s hope thatenough people can recognise the C-MAX as the achievement that it is.The 1.8-litre petrol engine fitted tothis car offers punchy performanceand admirable economy. Let’s hopeit’s enough.

220m while a 110mm drum brakeprovides the Innova's rear brakingpower. The system works efficiently tooffer excellent control under justabout all road conditions.
VERDICTWith motoring costs mounting,
crowded roads and the growingawareness of the need to take care ofour environment, it can hardly be seenas surprising that more motorists areturning to two wheels rather thanfour to make their daily commute.
The Honda ANF 125i Innova's ultra-low running costs, competitive price,easy-going nature and attractivestyling will continue to make it a classleader within the step-through scootersector of the market.
WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?Easy-to-ride, easy on the pocket,
nippy and good-looking, sales of thefrugal ANF 125i Innova have beenhealthy for a number of years. Popularwith both experienced and newlyestablished riders, this model is nowone of Europe's best-selling 'step-through' scooters.
In 2007 Honda introduced a raft ofstyling changes to enhance theInnova's appearance and at the sametime they took the opportunity toupdate its robust and typically reliableHonda engine in order to provideincreased economy and more power.New electronic PGM-FI fuel injectionwas fitted to make for easier startingand to improve the responsiveness ofits performance. An Idle Air ControlValve (IACV) was also introduced toenhance engine response at low revsand to improve the evenness at idlingspeed.
The Innova is certainly fuel efficient. At a speed of 33mph the 125cc unit

sips fuel at the rate of just one litreevery 46 miles. An externally-mountedlow-emission Air Induction Systemforces fresh air into the engine'sexhaust port to increase the amountof exiting exhausts gases burnt, whichreducing exhaust emissions to wellwithin stringent European EURO-3emission regulation.
When it comes to changing thegears no manual clutch operation isrequired. The Innova's 4-speed rotarytransmission is equipped with a semi-automatic centrifugal clutch and gearchanges are made via the pressing ofa see-saw changer peddle. The peddlefeatures a toe shifter at the front anda heel pad at the back which helps tomake gear shifts easy while protectingshoes from damaging scratches andscrapes. The gearboxes' rotarycomposition allows for handydownshifts from fourth gear toneutral following a complete stop sothere is no need to make laboriouslychanges down through all the gears.
As for the Innova's improved styling,Honda's designers have attempted tomake its appearance even sleeker.Slight but effectual revisions to thescooter's front and side styling alongwith changes to its leg shields andlights accentuate the step-throughmodel's sporting aspirations. From2007, louvered vents introduced tothe side of its body have also aug-mented the Innova's chic style alongwith a redesigned aluminium grab rail. This rail offers the pillion rider safe andsecure hand grip during trips.Underneath the tilting seat is a largeand convenient seven litre lockablestorage area.
As you might expect with Honda, the Innova is very well constructed. It'savailable in four highly attractive two-tone colour schemes - Force SilverMetallic with Terra Silver Metallic,Candy Caribbean Blue Seas withCandy Lighting Blue, Asteroid Metallicwith Titanium Metallic and CandyBeam Red with Candy Foggy Orange.
WHAT DOES IT COST?Here in the UK customers can
expect to fork out for an on-the-road-price of £1,929 for the Honda ANF125i Innova, which is very competitiveagainst models from all its mainstreamrival manufacturers.HOW DOES IT HANDLE?
The Innova's lightweight and inher-ent stability makes it easy to rideunder all conditions. The suspensionsystem's rear dampers soak up bumpsand irregularities of the road surfacevery well to provide a comfortable andcompliant ride, while the 26mm lead-ing axle hydraulic front fork conveysrapid, safe and secure steering control. The scooter's front braking comescourtesy of a powerful, quick torespond dual-piston calliper measuring

Star on the rise again
uusseedd ccaarrssYour essential Friday guide to buying second-hand vehicles
The Gazette
MOTORING fashion is a fickle thing.Cast your mind back to the eightiesand everybody was after a GTi hatchor an executive saloon with utterlysuperfluous four-wheel drive.
Fast forward to the early ninetiesand the compact 4x4 started to gain inpopularity, before being steamrolleredin the sales charts by MPVs, citycarsand roadsters. The latest generation ofcompact 4x4s are way better thanbefore and this sector’s star is on therise again.
CHEAP & CHEERFULThe cheapest new five-door LandRover Freelander2 today for example, will still cost you a sizeable sum - andprobably much more if you’re to go forthe engine and specification you reallywant. All of which would seem topoint to the sense of buying a car likethis second-hand, particularly sincemodels like this are built to last. Yetused compact 4x4s aren’t cheap, norwill they be until buyers stop believingthat the impressive all-round abilities ofthese vehicles are exactly what theyneed.
AFFORDABLEMID-RANGERSJust because your budget won’t stretchto the latest and most sophisticated
options it doesn’t mean you’re not infor a whole heap of fun.
Given a sunny day and a technical, wooded off-road track, there’s not alot that’s more enjoyable than a softtop Suzuki Jimny. Surprisingly ruggedand capable of switching to rear-wheel
drive for fun on the gravel track backhome, the Jimny can paint a smile oneven the most cynical face. If you pre-fer something a little more sophisticat-ed on-road, why not try Daihatsu’sslimline Terios? There are no shortageof well looked after examples of both
of these cars so the usual caveatsregarding buying a used 4x4 – such asdented body panels or battered under-body parts - rarely apply. Other optionsthat are well worth looking at if fundsare limited are early Toyota RAV4s andthe dependable Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin.
DESIRABLE BUTPOTENTIALLY PRICEYThe sky’s the limit here. Prime pickwould be the Land Rover Freelander, especially in the vastly improvedFreelander 2 guise.
This model features Land Rover’s bril-liant ‘Terrain Response’ system whichreally takes the hassle out of off-roaddriving. It’s also far better built thanthe original Freelander. Otherwisethere’s the increasingly impressiveBMW X3 to look at, which has gar-nered a reputation as the driver’schoice amongst compact 4x4s.
Then there’s the second generationNissan X-Trail that’s bigger and plusherinside than the original and the ToyotaRAV4 that debuted early in 2006.
