Editors Letter

It’s come to that time of the month again where we bring out another

issue of our magazine.

I have to say that the response I have had since publishing the 1st

one has been very encouraging.

I think we can only get better with this magazine, and I know we have

a lot to learn.

Thank you to the Photographers who have made amazing

contributions to the magazine. Your photos all look incredible.

This month sees quite a bit of action in East London with both

the Extreme Festival and the Super GP. There is also the National

Rally Championship in Port Elizabeth this month and that is

always a highly anticipated event.

I’d like to once again thank my dad for all the effort put in the produce the magazine. It might be my name

on it at the end of the day, but without his hard work running around, this would not be possible.

Algoa Rally Club 50k Challenge 2015

Article: Neville BartlePhotos: DigiWorx Photography

The Algoa Rally Club 50k challenge 3rd round was held in the Loerie area on Saturday the 6 June following a week of rain and this cast some doubt on the stages particularly the farm lands which had been freshly graded. At Saturday morning recce the decision was taken to cut out some of the farm stages and run Van Stadens Pass, Gamtoos & Melon with Service Park and HQ at Spekboom

Lapa as planned.

The first car away at Van Stadens was visiting National Championship

competitors Richard Leeke with local

navigator Rikus Fourie driving a R2 Ford Fiesta, in hot pursuit was Johan and Ria Viljoen in a Volkswagen Golf, Bryan and Keith Heine in a Datsun SSS, Ross Bartle and Rick Janse Van Rensburg in a SAC

Volkswagen Polo.

The first casualty of the front runners was Neels Vosloo in a Toyota Yaris in stage 7 with a broken transmission. The remaining front runners held the pace for the duration of the rally until less than a kilometre from the end Bartle had transmission failure after moving

into third place behind Viljoen.

Page 7: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

Motorsport EC | July 2015 | 7

The 1400 class S1 had the first casually in the second stage of Van Stadens Pass when Melissa Heyman lost control in the last corner before the old bridge and

spun off into a side road collecting a stationary vehicle. Melissa and navigator Anza Muller received medical attention

and were taken to hospital for observation, fortunately discharged the same evening, bruised and battered. The

S1 Class was won by last year’s 50k Champion Ashley Bezuidenhout with

National experienced Mark Irvine navigating followed by Stepno and Lario

Pieterse driving a similar Volkswagen RA5 Citi Golf. Jan Vosloo and Ria Jansen in a Toyota Yaris were unable to spoil the party of Citi Golf ’s and finished seconds behind in third

place.

S2 1600cc 50k class winners were Rufus

Neethling and Henry Adams in a Volkswagen Polo, chasing visitors

Richard Leak and Rikus Fourie in a Ford Fiesta R2, who were first on the day and not part of the 50k championship using

this event as a warm up to the Volkswagen National Rally which will take place on the 17 and 18 July. Local

competitors will take part in the National Event as part of the 50k

Challenge scoring separately on the Friday & Saturday, and about 40 rally cars are expected to take part and will

compete on special stages at PEOTR super stage, Uitenhage and Loerie area.

East London Grand Prix CircuitIn the 17 years of this event, we have

been privileged to enjoy the emergence of many SA motorcycle champions while they were still very young. We believe that this year is no different when we see some of the youthful talent that was on display on

Saturday.

In the Superbike class the battle was dominated by Kyran de Lange on a

BMW, with Kawasaki ZX 10 riders,

Anthony Shelley and Matthew Hart providing an exciting second place duel, Keep your ears open for these names in the future of SA motorcycle racing. However, veteran Heinrich Rheeder (BMW) was always in contention and did not allow the exuberance of youth to intimidate him. This was evident in

Heat 1 when Rheeder squeezed the second place from Hart by a matter of 0.8 of a second when Shelley found

himself down the field behind local riders, Travis Warne and Travis Naude,

after and error on lap 5.

Heat 2 saw the 3 out-of-town youngsters crossing the line with no more than 0.7 seconds dividing them when the race was red-flagged after 7 laps. Behind them our local Travises were keeping the crowds on their feet

as Naude crept closer to Warne to produce one of the most daring

overtaking manoeuvres we have seen as they entered Potter’s Pass shoulder to shoulder, and remained alongside

each other all the way through the legendary corner, with Naude emerging

ahead into Rifle Bend.

It is difficult to say whether or not this was the deciding moment through Potter’s Pass, but at prize giving a

jubilant Travis Naude was presented with the much sought-after Bearing Man Big Balls Trophy for the fastest speed through Potter’s Pass on the day.

Not as fast, but every bit as exciting was the Breakfast Run class, which resulted

in a difference of 2.5 seconds in the finishing times of the first 8 riders in heat 1. Dwayne Pienaar secured a first place in both heats, but not without hard work when, during heat 2, Pienaar

crossed the line only fractions of a second ahead of the first four riders. In the final results, local rider Martin Minnie recorded a creditable 4th place overall, only 2 seconds behind 3rd placed Wayne Liebenberg over the two

heats of the day.

The Historic Motorcycle Group was, once again, well represented with no

fewer than 23 pre-1985 machines parading around our circuit at a

blistering pace. The oldest of these bikes was a 1951 Vincent 1000cc in a

Norton Featherbed frame, but old Triumphs, BSAs, Moto Guzzis, Ducatis and a range of early Japanese bikes, all immaculately restored to better-than showroom condition, were on display and being piloted by their very proud

owners.

Border Motorsport Club is very proud to be able to deliver events of this

calibre. For those who missed this one, don’t miss the next big action event, the Extreme Festival, scheduled for 11 July, when the National ZX10 Cup for Motorcycles, VW Challenge, Formula V, Historic/Classic Saloons and Engen VW

Cup will be in action.

Border Karting Round 4

Article: Jethro SchwartzPhotos: Trevor Kitching

Round 4 of the Border karting club championship was held under sunny conditions on the 13th of June 2015 at

the Formula K section of the Historic East London Grand Prix Circuit. The Weather was a true blessing after rain and inclement weather had been forecast during the week. The event saw many of the usual local Border and Algoa Kart Club drivers entered with the

exception of a few key players with various reasons. The Pit lane was still full though despite the absent drivers as

some new blood turned up on the day, most notably in the clubman’s C class and it’s always healthy to see growth in

the sport.

In the Cadet Class Kaylim Padayache (Nate’s Car Sales) Started where he left off from round 3 of the championship with another 2 fine victories on the day, but he didn’t take the clean sweep as newcomer to the class Dylan Stevens to victory in the final heat. This was enough though for Padayache to take

Page 11: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

Motorsport EC | July 2015 | 11

1st place overall for the Day ahead of Championship Leader Jordan van der

Merwe (Mag Lab KME Racing) who finished tied on points for 2nd overall with Stevens. Cayden Randall Picked up solid points to take 4th overall for the day. As we have now reached the halfway point in the championship the standings are as close as ever with just 7 points between van der Merwe and

Padayache for 1st and 2nd positions.

The 60cc junior Class saw Sebastian Smith (C&G Bodyworks) take full advantage of the fact that Kenzo

Barnard (Mag Lab KME Racing) did not enter as he took the overall Victory for the day and with it the championship lead. Matthew Rowe (RPM) took 2nds and a 1st place on the day to finish 2nd

overall and Port Elizabeth’s Kiesha Potgieter (Energy) drove consistently well to once again finish on the podium

in 3rd overall.

Jono Stephens made a brilliant debut in the clubman’s C class as he managed to take 3 victories from 3 heats to finish

1st overall. Melindre Marais drove consistently well to narrowly to finish 2nd and Beat her sister Cherne who also did an impeccable job on the day

to finish in 3rd place. Britney van der Merwe continued the trend of new drivers taking the top positions in the class as she finished tied on points with Kevin Vosloo who drove well and overcame some technical difficulties to

claim 4th place. Damian Thompson took 6th overall on his 1st outing ahead of Kevin Nightingale in 7th and Cuan Flusk who had a nightmare of a day after he bent an axle which left him unable to compete in heats 2 and 3

and finished in 8th overall.

Page 12: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

Motorsport EC | July 2015 | 12

Clubman’s B Saw Jared De Kock (Big Joe Racing) dominate on the day as he took 3 wins from 3 starts to take the overall victory. De Kock did however breakout

of the allowed lap time of 36.000 seconds and in so doing will move up to class A from the next event. Kyle Hart made a welcome return to karting with 3, 2nd place finishes on the day putting him in 2nd overall. Ashton Nell drove well to finish with 2, 3rds and a 4th to finish 3rd overall ahead of Jeff Hall in

4th overall.

Geoff Stephens (Mag Lab KME Racing) took 3 victories from 3 starts once again to take the overall victory in Clubmans A. His life was made easy though as Cameron Kelly (Monster Energy) and

Jethro Schwartz (Black Betty Motorsport) got into a fierce battle which allowed Stephens to easily run off into the distance. Kelly would finish 2nd

and Schwartz would finish 3rd overall. Brent Strydom (C&G Bodyworks) was

4th overall.

The Super Rok class was an extremely tight knitted affair, this was evident in the fact that 3 drivers were tied for 1st place on the day. Richard Clarke (RPM), Craig Borges (Big Joe Racing) and Shaun

Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) all ended up on 94 points. The Podium Eventually being decided on fastest lap time meant that Shaun Vallance took home 1st place followed by Richard Clarke and Craig Borges in 3rd. Shaun

Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing) finished 4th with Grant Godfrey (RPM)

in 5th. Bradley Rowe (RPM) took 6th overall ahead of Tristan Wantenaar who

made the move from clubman’s C to Super Rok in 7th overall.

The Impressive DD2 Gearbox class saw Shaun Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing)

in a dominant mood as he took 3 victories from 3 heats on the day to take 1st overall. In 2nd Place was a tie between Wesley Jones who returned

from overseas and Championship Leader Geoff Stephens (Mag Lab KME Racing). Shaun Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) took the honors of 4th overall,

Page 13: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

with Andre Botha (Mag Lab KME Racing) and Craig Borges (Big Joe

Racing) in 5th and 6th places respectively.

The Next Round of the Border Karting Club Championship will be held on 25th of July 2015. For More information please contact [email protected]

Extreme Festival Algoa Motorsport Club - 13 June 2015

Article: Andre De KockPhotos: DigiWorx Photography

Close racing and much spectacle in front of a large crowd typified the Extreme Tour’s visit to the Aldo Scribante circuit near Port Elizbeth

on Saturday, June 13.

The bill-topping National Production Car category – minus the Ford works team tackled three

races. The first saw Gennaro Bonafede (Sasol Audi S4) snatch a

narrow victory over Michael Stephen (Engen Xtreme Audi S4), Hennie Groenewald (Sasol Audi

S4), Simon Moss (Engen Xtreme Audi S4), Graeme Nathan

(Genuine Parts VW Golf GTI) and Michael van Rooyen (Williams

Hunt Chev Cruze).

The second, started from an inverted grid, had Michael van

Rooyen leading for eight laps, before contact with one of the

Audis sent his Cruze through a gravel trap. That left Groenewald to win from Stephen, Bonafede,

Moss, Van Rooyen and Nathan.

Page 15: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

Motorsport EC | July 2015 | 15

Michael Stephen led the final race from lights to chequered flag,

leading home Groenewald, Bonafede, Moss, Van Rooyen and

Nathan.

Niyaas Modack (BMW M3) won Class X on the first two occasions. He fell off the track in the final

race, leaving the victory to Ian Riddle (BMW M3).

Mathew Hodges (Makapano Risks Polo) won the first Engen

Volkswgen Cup race from Matt Shorter (Champion Polo), Juan

Gerber (Haupt Polo), Shaun La Reservee (Alpine Motors Polo) and Sheldon van der Linde (Champion

Polo).

Race two went to Daniel Rowe (Ferodo Polo), ahead of Shaun La

Reservee,

Sheldon van der Linde, Matt Shorter and Trevor Bland (PG Glass Polo). The final race victory of the day went to Chris Shorter (Ferodo Polo), ahead of Sheldon van der Linde , Daniel Rowe, Matt Shorter

and Trevor Bland.

The opening Red Square KawasakiMasters Cup race was red-flagged after four laps, when Johan le Roux high-sided his machine through the Hairpin. He suffered leg and

hip injuries and was taken to hospital.

Page 16: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

After the restart Graeme van Breda (Kawasaki ZX10R) rode to a comfortable victory ahead of Kyle Robinson (ZX10R), Tony Klem (ZX10R) and Pieter de Vos (ZX10R). Van Breda led the second race

from beginning to end, beating Pieter de Vos, Kyle

Robinson and Tony Klem to the finish.

Jaco Schriks (Rhema) won the opening Hankook Formula Vee race, finishing ahead of Alan Holme (Office Direct Rhema), Gert

van den Berg ( Rhema) and BradBenningfield (Rhema). Schriks’ car suffered electrical problems in race two, leaving Holm to win from Van den Berg, Michael Mastnak

(Rhema) and Benningfield.

The Comsol VW Challenge boasted 32 starters, making their coastal visit a huge success. James

Hurley (Polo) was the overall winner in Class A, while Nic Clarke (Polo) and Jacques Smith (Polo) claimed the overall Class B and C

victories, respectively.

Johan Barnard (Opel Kadett GSE) won both races for Dunlop

Historic Saloons, followed on the first occasion by Jason Greyling

(Ford Anglia) and Christopher Radloff (Toyota Corona).

Thompson (Opel Rekord) took the final two podium places.

Bevan Schwartz (Ford Mustang)took both races for Xtreme Projects Regional Saloon Cars. In race one, he was followed by Niyaas Modack

(BMW M3) and Brent Watts (Nissan Skyline). The next time around, his closest challengers were Brent Watts and Shannon

Braun (Mazda Rotary).

on the 11th of July.

After much media exposure, the time finally arrived last Saturday for the Piet Scheepers challenge

event.A big crowd attended and lots of flavor was added in the terms of

Pit Babes, Big Foot, Tiny to mention a few. Coupled to this, a number of out of town entries, but

sadly at least 7 of these never arrived.

In the Hot Rod class, the challengers were a bit of a

disappointment and Piet was

never under threat, easily winning the prize money.

In the V8 AMS class, the car Piet was to drive, was not on track as it had apparently been sold a few days earlier. Nevertheless, a good variety of cars entertained the fans and Welkom’s Hendrik van der Merwe, put up a most impressive

performance in his stunning looking green no W101 car.

Hendrik smiled from ear to ear on winning the R10000 prize money.

All the usual classes also ran,

except for the midgets and the evening was filled with spins, breakages and some hard wall contact, all adding to the flavor of

a successful evening’s racing. In the 1660 class, Edwin Drake proved unbeatable, but there was a very determined effort from young Jaco Pitout who raced very

well to finish second. The 2.1 class saw Tyron van Tonder

off the pace, battling with a misfire on the Corsa and after a track

incident, Wayne Holland was out for the rest of the evening. Edwin

also won the Final. The Standard V8 class was won by Vince Stow and the Super 6 class

by Winston Whittle.A good evening’s racing, sadly many cars fell out, but they will be

back for the next event.

The most recent Victory event was held on 06 June on a

beautiful, but chilly winters

evening.

Racing started just after 6 and there were very little delays, so the relatively small crowd were on their way back home just after 10.

The Beginners and Junior Hot Rods were again grouped

together and for the first time, young Wade Robert, strapped himself in the ex-Suzette Aylward 1660 Golf. Laurika van Tonder won the final ahead of Damon Miles in

his Fiesta, with Wade Robert

delighted to be on the podium in 3rd.

Beginners was won by Zandri Weitz.

In the 1660 class, as to be

expected, there was some very close and exciting racing

throughout the evening, with Mike Muller’s Polo taking the

victory in the final ahead of Ruan Mostert and Kean Barnard.

Both the 2.1 and HR classes are struggling at the moment with too few cars, but Brendan Beldon was back with his Tigra looking very smart indeed and the Johan van

Page 21: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

Motorsport EC | July 2015 | 21

Rensburg Polo was also back on track. In the final, 5 starters lined up and the 2.1 section was won by Pieta Victor, with Martin Prinsloo taking a well-deserved 2nd place.

Quentin Ellard’s beautiful red

Corsa Rotary had no competition and easily won the Hot Rod class.

The Super Six class is fast

becoming one of the highlights at Victory Raceway. This time

Mario de Ridder was the star of the show and started from pole in the final. Abri Pienaar was out ear-ly and has some panel repair work

to do before the next

meeting. The final was a thriller and a great win for Brendan

Fourie, who is thoroughly

enjoying the class. Mario came second and a very determined

Barry Conradie 3rd.

This event saw the first

appearance of one of the 2 Late Models, Atta Victor now owns.

Divan van Zyl was behind the wheel with his Super Six

Mercedes powertrain, but had to park the car due to a slipping gear-

box.

There is never a dull moment in the American Saloons and Shawn Victor from EL had bad luck in the first heat when a stray piece of metal penetrated his radiator and shorted out the car’s battery. Leon Ferreira is having to run with a smaller engine for the time being as his engine needs attention and Johnny Weitz had to retire before

the Final.

Divan Weitz was a bit off the pace during the evening, but Johan Swart, who only recently started racing, looked like he had been racing for years and demonstrated impressive car control. In the final,

seven cars started with the

master, Pieta Victor, in pole

position. Johan Swart proudly lined up next to Pieta on the front row of the grid. Pieta won, Johan continued impressing throughout the race to finish a well-deserved

second and that with a much

lower horse powered Lexus motor. Shawn Victor fought through the pack from the back to finish 3rd.

I liked the idea of the prizes being awarded on the Infield on a

podium and to round the evening off, Johan Swart had donated a TV as a prize to a lucky ticket holder.

Another Round of the Algoa Kart Club Championship was held on Saturday the 20th of June at the

Celso Scribante Circuit in Port Elizabeth. The fields were once again boosted

by the Border Kart Club competitors who made the trip

to PE to join in on the days racing.

The Cadet class was a tight knit affair with Tristian Coertze

sharing the overall victory on the day with Ethan Jacobs as the pair finished tied on 56 points, Coertze would take home then 1st place trophy though with 2 wins to Jacobs 1. Bryce Loenen would take home the 3rd place

trophy with East London newcomer Dylan Stevens

finishing in 4th.The 60cc juniors were once

again dominated by Kenzo Barnard as he took home 3 wins from 3 starts. Aiden Barnard drove well to finish 2nd ahead of Thaiyen Govender in 3rd. 4th place ended in a tie between PE’s Kiesha Potgieter and EL’s

Sebastian Smith.The Super Rok’s were

dominated on the day by East London’s Craig Borges winning 3 out of 3 ahead of Bryce High and Roxan Rieder in 2nd and

3rd respectively.Clubman’s B saw Johan Stander take victory in all 3 races ahead

of East London’s Shannon Jackson in 2nd and Geoff Stephens in 3rd. Cameron

Kelly and Craig Borges tied for 4th place on the day.

Shabeer Fredricks was once again in fine form as he strolled

to another Clubman’s C victory. Craig Loenen finished in 2nd ahead of Arno Seyfert in

3rd with Bryce High, Roxan Rieder and Jaun Meyer finishing in 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Brent Strydom made the trip up from East London for the 1st time and won Clubman’s class X.

The DD2 Class is always a spectacular class to watch. This time was no different. Bryn High

from PE managed to take

victory in his first time out in the class ahead of the EL

competitors. Shawn Vallance and Shaun Gradwell were best of the rest as they tied for 2nd place with Vallance taking the 2nd place trophy with a higher finishing position in one of the heats. 4th place went to Wesley Jones. Craig Borges managed to fend off Geoff Stephens. The

pair finished 5th and 6th overall respectively ahead of Andre Botha in 7th and Kyle

Hart in 8th.

Border Stock Car Association had their third race of the season on 13 June,

sponsored by NTT-VW. This was a regional/club race and we thankful that it was well supported by both drivers and supporters. The weather played its part in making it an awesome night’s racing. Thanks to the Victory Raceway drivers for their support.

The Rear Wheel Drive Class is always enjoyed by the spectators as these drivers challenge each other around the track in a sideways manor. It was a close contest on the night between Franqios Hammond and

Anthony power, but Hammond managed to take the overall victory. Cameron Hammond’s consistency

throughout the night paid dividends when he claimed the final podium spot in 3rd. Christopher Partridge took 4th for the night in one of the clubs most interesting

cars. William Hunter battled with Mechanical difficulties and took the

overall with Raymond Smith in 6th also suffering Mechanical difficulties.

The 1660 class is a very competitive class countrywide and is building up nicely in East London. The crowd can look forward to some good racing from this class in the future. Zaine Knickelbein put in a stellar

driving performance to take the overall victory on the night ahead of Michael

Muller who was visiting from Victory Raceway in 2nd. Jarryd Hurn took home

another trophy in 3rd spot ahead of Jouwert van der Walt also visiting from

Victory Raceway in 4th place. Andrew van der Westhuizen took 5th with Delwin Crous

and Oakley Meyer in 6th and 7th respectively.

The 2.1 Modified Class is another class that is jam packed with action and always has the crowd on edge. In third heat we had and accident, but thankfully no one was

Page 25: Motorsport EC July 2015 Issue 2

Motorsport EC | July 2015 | 25

hurt. Allan Hurn managed to escape his incident where he made contact with the wall and was able to take another 1st pace overall. Wayne Victor was a solid 2nd place

ahead of Jason Prinsloo in3rd. Gert Stroebel took home 4th overall with

Robert Rasmussen in 5th.

The Hot-rod class had the spectators on their feet, with their fast and close racing, with a few argie bargees. East London’s

Jody van Zummeren representing Victory Raceway took the Overall victory after fending off a solid charge from Shawn Collins who finished 2nd. Ashley Victor took 3rd overall ahead of Derick van der

Westhuizen who had a surprisingly quiet night. Dylan Victor was 5th with

Julian Herman and Theunis Vosloo in 6th and 7th respectively. Jouwert van der Walt visiting from victory Raceway was 8th and

Nigel Muller was 9th.

The Beginner class has the club’s up and coming drivers. These drivers range from

12 year olds to eldest 17 years old. Corbin had an accident and had some real damage

done to his car, glad to say they busy repairing it. Stephen Page took 1st overall on the Night ahead of Amy Naude in 2nd. Rudi Smith was 3rd with Carla Naude in 4th. After Corbin Holloway’s bad luck he

finished in 5th overall.

The Flexi V8 American Saloon Class is a real crowd pleaser, with fast and spectacular

racing. East London’s Shawn Victor representing Victory Raceway took the top honours on the evening. Ryno Hattingh was 2nd overall with Gavin Frohbus Jnr in 3rd. Arnold Hattingh was 4th ahead of Willem Kirsten in 5th, Zander Frohbus in 6th Rene

Stroebel in 7th and Clinton Green in 8th.

Our next dirt oval race will be on 4 July’15 at 17:00. We are in East London, diagonally opposite the S P C A, in Summerpride. We have a kiosk that supplies good food, cool drinks, chips etc. For more information

Supadrift 4 Round 4 took place at Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone on the 22nd of May. The Eastern Capes only competitor in the Na-tional Series is Reigning Champi-on Wade van Zummeren. Wade had a slow start to the season after pulling out of round 1 with techni-cal difficulties and has since been in fine forming scoring valuable points and clawing his way back

into the championship fight. On this occasion Wade managed to Qualify in 2nd position in the Border Towing Skyline. This meant he would face Alex Simon in a V8 powered Nissan 350z in the top 16. Wade defeated Simon and moved on to the Great 8. Here He would face the might of the powerhouse of South African drifting in the form of Otto Graven in a Toyota

Supra powered by a Nascar V8.

When van Zummeren and Grav-en clash it’s always a battle of the heavyweights of South African Drifting and on this occasion the victory went the way of van Zum-meren. This meant he would then face the only other driver to win a South African Drifting Title, Jason Webb in a Nissan S13 200sx. This is also always a good battle as the 2 arch rivals both never refuse to give up. On this occasion it was once again Wade van Zummeren who took victory as he seemed to be on

unstoppable form.In the final Wade would be paired against this year’s series leader Paolo Gouveia in a Nissan S13 200sx. It was once again an intense battle and Wade van Zummeren emerged victorious bringing him right back into the championship hunt. Wade has now moved up to
