One of the districts natural wonders is the glorious range of wildflowers that set the mountains and farmlands ablaze from September to November. Botanists have recorded over 500 varieties of which 30-40 are found nowhere else in the world.
Renowned as one of WAs premier agricultural centres, the district has progressed from apples, sheep and cattle into tourism and viticulture with great success.
One of Australias most awarded wine growing regions, Mount Barker has impressed wine critics with its outstanding cool climate
Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
One of the first wineries to be established in 1975 was the district namesake Plantagenet that has forged an enviable reputation both nationally and internationally for its superb cool climate wines.
Since then many wineries have opened their doors offering visitors wines, tastings and food to suit every palate.
Two annual wine festivals are held each year to celebrate the local wine industry (See page 16 for more details). Another important annual event is Art in the Park, held in the Porongurup during April which invites artists to install their artwork within the National Parks natural environment. The Great Southern Art Trail winds its way through the district in October each year.
Welcome to Mount BarkerWALKS, WINE AND WILDFLOWERS
The Mount Barker Visitor Centre invites you to discover the walks, wine and wildflowers of our wonderful region.
Located in the renovated Railway building (built 1923), the Visitor Centres friendly staff are here to guide your visit and we will do everything we can to make your holiday enjoyable and memorable.
Mount Barker is ideally situated just 30 minutes from Denmark and Albany. It is an ideal place to base yourself so you can experience the mountains, wine, wildflowers and the stunning Great Southern beaches all within half an hour from town!
Framed by the spectacular Porongurup and Stirling Range National Parks, Mount Barker is the heart of the Great Southern and forms part of the Shire of Plantagenet. The Shire embraces Mount Barker, its commercial and administrative centre, and also the townships of Kendenup, Narrikup, Porongurup, Rocky Gully, and the Porongurup Range. Frankland River and Cranbrook are within easy driving distance and provide access to wineries and the peaks of the Stirling Range National Park.
Driving through rugged granite peaks, towering forests and fertile vineyards is a breathtaking sight but its when you get out of the car that Mount Barkers true diversity as a tourism destination can be appreciated. A visit to the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock in the Porongurup Range is a must for those able to trek the 2 km through the stunning National Park.

Reflecting this heritage, Mount Barker offers a delightful range of historic and modern accommodation. From secluded luxury chalets in high mountain peaks to B&B cottages and character homesteads surrounded by beautiful gardens, Mount Barker has something for everyone.
Blessed with clean air and sky, large tracts of National Park and fertile farmland, Mount Barker has also become synonymous with gourmet local produce including free range chickens, beef, olive oil, cherries and strawberries.
Local restaurants, cafes, hotels and cellar doors put this fine produce to good use offering visitors and foodies scrumptious homestyle cooking and modern Australian cuisine in a variety of town and farm settings.

The PorongurupA 15 minute drive east of Mount Barker brings you to the oldest mountain range in the world; the unique Porongurup. Over 1 billion years old, this ancient forest island is home to towering granite peaks, majestic stands of Karri trees and is surrounded by some excellent wineries.
Renowned for its awesome natural beauty, wildflowers, colourful local characters and huge variety of natural sightseeing attractions, the Porongurup is the complete tourism destination.
Blessed with a laid-back country atmosphere and talented local artists, the region caters for romantic couples, touring families, foodies, wine lovers or active tourists in search of bushwalking, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing.
National Parks PassesThe Department of Parks and Wildlife require a fee for all vehicles that enter a National Park. Passes are available from Ranger Stations situated in the Park or at the Mount Barker Visitors Cente, Porongurup Village Tea Rooms, Bluff Knoll Cafe or Stirling Range Retreat.
WalksThere are plenty of walks, from easy strolls along firebreaks to harder hikes up peaks that enable tourists of all ages and fitness to appreciate the Ranges sense of beauty and adventure. For more information about walks, drop into the Mount Barker Visitor Centre.
Granite Skywalk Castle RockOpened in 2011, this award-winning elevated walkway, and master peice of engineering, rewards those who venture up the Castle Rock Walk Trail at the eastern end of the Porongurup Range. A medium grade 2 km uphill path takes the walker through forest rich with plant and bird life, then to the extraordinary Balancing Rock. One then scrambles over boulders using steel handholds to a vertical 6 metre ladder that takes you up to the Skywalk. The stainless steel walkway wraps around the vertical face of Castle Rock allowing the landscape to unfold before you.
Tourist DrivesThe entire Porongurup Range can be easily circumnavigated by road in just a few hours. The most popular route is from Bolganup Road along Scenic Drive and then into Woodlands Road. Scenic Drive is a good gravel road that passes through karri, jarrah and marri forests while offering visitors views of the mighty Gibraltar Rock and the Sleeping Beauty and Stirling Range peaks on the northern horizon.
Whether youre enjoying the scenic tourist drive or trekking through the bush, be on the lookout for the Porongurups abundant wildlife. There are over 78 species of birdlife including majestic Wedge-tailed Eagles and the electric blue plumage of Splendid Wrens.

Rock ClimbingPerhaps the ultimate sense of adventure and accomplishment in this rugged environment is rock climbing and for many climbers in the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges are Western Australias mecca. The Porongurup offers many impressive granite domes that present friction slab climbs and good crack and chimney routes but be warned this is serious rock climbing, only for the experienced.
Superb WineSurrounded by some of Mount Barkers leading wineries, the Porongurup is one of Western Australias emerging wine districts. There are over 10 wineries situated on the slopes of the ranges, many of which have award-winning wines and offer tastings and cellar sales to the public. Rob Deletti at Castle Rock Wines was the 2015 James Halliday Wine maker of the year.
A relatively new industry to the Porongurup, the first major vineyards were planted in 1979 and traditionally produced varieties of Riesling. Since then, many vineyards have planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the deep granite karri soils with great success.
If you are planning a visit during March, consider attending the Porongurup Wine Festival, where wine, food and entertainment awaits.
Porongurup Village is located on Porongurup Road and is an eclectic hamlet of accommodation and shops. Fuel, refreshments, groceries, local crafts and home cooked meals can all be found in the village along with a huge variety of accommodation ranging from budget backpackers, to guest houses and luxury chalets perched high in the mountains.

WildflowersMount Barker is incredibly rich and diverse in wildflower species and is recognised as one of Australias premier locations to view orchids and other spectacular flowers. From the rugged peaks, towering forests and lush rolling granite flats of the Stirling Range and Porongurup National Parks, Mount Barker is an ideal place to experience some of the worlds biodiversity hotspots.
The springtime wildflower display from late August to November is justifiably famous. There are over 1500 species of plants in the Stirling Ranges alone, with over 80 species being endemic including the famous Mountain Bells (Darwinias).
The Fitzgerald River National Park and the rich coastal heath from Walpole to Bremer Bay are full of wildflower surprises for enthusiasts willing to explore.
There are also many orchid hotspots in our shire and nearby. White gum country is renown for spider orchids ie. Frankland, Cranbrook, Tenterden and Kendenup. Many other orchids are to be found in Jarrah/Marri species-rich bush remnants around Mount Barker, Narrikup and Porongurup.
Mondurup Reserve is a renown orchid location with the best sites being;
1. Opposite the medical centre from the car park on Langton road.
2. Through the gates at Marion St. entrance to the reserve.( walk uphill past the water plant and water tank to the granitic heath to the top of the ridge.) Lechenaulia is also abundant there.
Twin Creeks reserve at Porongurup is another good location. Maps and expert advice are available at the Porongurup shop.
The railway reserve on Carbarup Rd heading to Kendenup from Woogenilup road abounds with orchids.
Houseguests at Banksia Farm are offered expert guided bird, orchid, banksia garden or eco-sunset bush walks. Mount Trio and Stirling Range caravan parks offer guests guided seasonal tours also.
How Best to Observe Our Fascinating Wildflowers.
Drive slowly and be prepared to stop and take short walks into the bush on different soil types and terrain as the species vary accordingly.
Our plants are often small, delicate, showy and secretive but fun to find. We are NOT amassed with fields of the same flowering types like everlastings that can bloom in the drier inland areas seasonally if they get appropriate rains.
Recently burnt bush areas are the best for orchids. They become more visible. Take caution not to tread on them until you get your eye in for spotting them.
Obey dieback warnings and precautions. Use footbath facilities where provided. Brush the dirt off your shoes at each site on entering and on leaving.
It is illegal to pick and remove any plant material, flowers, seeds or pods without the appropriate licenses. Leave them for others to enjoy.

The Stirling Range National ParkOne of Western Australias few mountain wildernesses, the Stirling Range National Park is a place of contrasts.
Blessed with rugged mountain peaks rising to 1095 metres above sea level at Bluff Knoll (the highest peak in south- western Australia), and fragile wildflowers, the Stirling Ranges span 65 kilometres from east to west.
A bushwalking, sightseeing and rock climbing mecca, these alluring blue mountains are accessed through historic Kendenup or the Porongurup via Chester Pass Road. Subject to unpredictable weather changes, the mountains should be respected when exploring the diverse terrain and are WAs only site of intermittent snow falls in winter.
The Aboriginal name Koi Kyeunu-ruff (place of ever moving about fog and mist) is an appropriate name indeed for the Stirling Range.
A wildflower and plant reserve of international significance, the Stirlings springtime wildflower display (August to November) is justifiably famous. With over 1500 plant species including rare orchids, mountain bells and banksias, the Range abounds with 148 bird species (90 of which breed in the park) and 19 species of native mammals.
Scenic DrivesThe main scenic route is Stirling Range Drive, which extends from Chester Pass Road to Red Gum Pass Road, a distance of 42 kilometres. This good gravel road provides an excellent introduction to the spectacular central and western regions of the Stirling Range.
There are several lookout points for visitors along Stirling Range Drive and Chester Pass Road. Picnic spots are dotted throughout the Stirling Range National Park and at the base of the major peaks.
The Bluff Knoll carpark and picnic area is definitely worth a visit for the dramatic and often cloud-shrouded main face of Bluff Knoll which looms over the carpark.
Bushwalking and TrekkingThe Stirling Range is a wonderful asset and must be protected for future generations. This is a fragile ecosystem, always under threat from feral animals, dieback and human intervention. Do not enter protected areas in the National Park, take your litter with you and do not pick the flowers.
Those wishing to explore the walks of the Stirlings must remember that it is a wilderness and conditions can change rapidly. Be prepared with hats, sunscreen, energy snacks, sturdy walking shoes and plenty of water. On the peaks, it gets cold, and a lightweight jacket is advisable.

Bluff KnollOne of the best walks is Bluff Knoll (3-4 hours return). About 20,000 people commence the climb every year, with more than half making it to the summit.
Although long and strenuous, the Bluff Knoll climb is suitable for most people of reasonable fitness levels-the excellent path contouring around the side of the mountain. The walk offers impressive views to the coastline near Albany, vistas over a huge chasm and the spectacular eastern peaks of the Range plus a waterfall (about a quarter of the way up).
ToolbrunupOne of the most exciting and interesting climbs in the Stirlings, Toolbrunup (3-4 hours return) may look difficult to climb but most people who are fit and agile will find it within their capability.
Other walks include Mt Trio (2-3 hours return), Mt Hassell (2-3 hours return).
Talyuberlup (2-3 hours return). Mt Magog (3-4 hours return), Ellen Peak (8 hours return) and Baby Barnett Hill (1.5 hours return). This is an excellent wildflower location.
The Stirling Range National Park also offers a wide variety of walk trails including short walks into the bushland surrounding Moingup Springs campsite and the Stirling Range Retreat.
Longer walks include Yungermere Crescent (6 hours return), and Mt James Track (3-4 hours).
Backpacking HikesThe Ridge Walk is the quintessential wilderness hike of the Stirlings and one of the greatest
challenges for bushwalkers in south western Australia. Taking in three, 1000 metre peaks and numerous other rugged summits, the 25km hike normally takes 2-3 days. The rugged cliffs and majestic peaks such as Pyungoorup, Ellen and Isongerup are often enhanced by dramatic cloud formations and carpets of wildflowers.
Other long hikes include Mt Magog/Talyuberlup (2 days return).
Rock ClimbingThe site of some of WAs first recorded rock climbs, the Stirling Range has a large number of sheer sandstone and quartzite rock faces as well as pinnacles, gullies and jagged buttresses.
Over 200 climbing routes (many of them considered Australian classics), have been established throughout the mountains catering for beginners to the most accomplished mountaineer.
SafetyPeople planning to undertake challenging overnight backpacking routes must register their intentions at either Moingup Springs or Bluff Knoll Ranger Posts. Walkers must be well prepared and have plenty of water.
AccommodationThere are a number of farmstay, bed and breakfast, chalets, cabins and lodge options bordering the Stirlings. For details contact the Mount Barker Visitor Centre on 08 9851 1163.

Heritage and HistorySt. Werburghs ChapelA trip to Mount Barker would not be complete without visiting the historic St.Werburghs Chapel. Built in 1873 by George Edward Egerton-Warburton, this serene heritage icon was made of pug and clay dug from a nearby pit.
A carpenter from Albany, Mr.Blechynden carried out the exquisite woodwork probably using Sheoak from near Albany and locally-sourced Jarrah.
There are 32 religious buildings dedicated to St.Werburgh; 29 are located in England, one in Zimbabwe, one in Ireland and the other just 12 minutes from Mount Barkers town centre.
Services, weddings and christenings are still held by candlelight in the Chapel, which has never had power.
The Old Police StationThe Old Police Station was built by convict labour in 1868 and consolidates much of Mount Barkers heritage in one convenient location.
Surrounded by magnificent lawns and gardens, the Plantagenet Historical Society opened the Cottage as a museum in 1968, furnishing it with artifacts donated by residents of the Shire. In 1971 the Pioneer Room was built to display more artefacts and in 1985 and 1987 the cottage and stables were restored.
At the Museum there are sheds full of old machinery, with restored wagons also on display.
A house built in the 1870s from hand-split wooden slabs has been erected nearby. A complete apple packing shed has been assembled in honour of the industry, whilst a Whitechapel buggy sits resplendent in the stable. His and Hers wooden thunderboxes are adorned with creepers and beautiful Splendid Wrens can be seen hopping from blooming flowers in spring.
The Old Police Station was occupied till 1908, when a new police station was built next door. The Court House office was added in 1919. The stables had a portion divided off for the lock-up in the 1880s. The Napier Creek one-teacher school was moved to the museum in 1994 and also has its history displayed on the walls.
Police duties included having a change of horses ready for the mail coach which operated from Albany to Perth. They also patrolled as far as Esperance on horseback, conducted the census, did the weather reporting and mail deliveries.
In 1997, the second Police Station and Court Room were acquired. The whole complex is well worth a visit and needs more than an hour to cover all facets of this historic time capsule.
Enjoy!

Welcome to our Wine Region! Please explore our corner of the Great Southern Wine Region - a region of friendliness, unique characters & memorable flavours. The wine industry welcomes you! Taste & buy small batch wines not readily available, small bin lots, limited release varietals and of course medal-winning wines. A visit to each winery is a new experience. With over 20 cellar door outlets in the region, visitors can still meet the people behind the wines, gaining insight into their winemaking style and healthy sense of humour.
Celebrated for its outstanding Riesling vintages rich in floral aromas and citrus flavours, the Great Southerns diverse range of micro-climates & terroir offers you a smorgasbord of wine varieties including premium Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blancs. Harnessing the cool Great Southern climate and deep granite/karri soils, local grape growers and winemakers have taken pride in producing wines that truly reflect our regions terroir.
From early plantings by the Department of Agriculture in 1965 and Tony Smith of Plantagenet Wines in 1968, the regions vineyards have grown to over 1000 acres.
The increasing popularity of the regions wines has spawned two annual wine festivals. The Mount Barker Grapes & Gallops Festival held in January and the Porongurup Wine Festival held in March. The latter features the hugely
entertaining Porongurup Grape Stomp and a swag of live music.
All the major grape varieties are represented in the Mount Barker and Porongurup sub-regions of the Great Southern and consistently gain awards at the Perth Royal Wine Show, the Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia and beyond. So treat yourself to a bottle of wine, whilst enjoying the views of rugged mountains or rolling farmlands. Pack a picnic or discover a caf, restaurant or cellar door that serves great regional flavours and tasting plates.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OUR WINE REGION

Frankland River and CranbrookFrankland River Wine Region Frankland River is one of Australias fastest growing wine regions. Although viticulture began in the Frankland River region in 1969, it has only recently become known as a significant producer of premium quality Western Australian wines.
Frankland River is one of the coolest wine producing regions in Western Australia. The overall cool climate and long warm growing season ensure the grapes develop a delicate intensity and complexity on the vine. While the area has a relatively low average rainfall of 650 millimetres per annum, vineyards overcome this through the construction of catchment areas, drains and earthen dams. These factors combined with deep well-drained soils of consistent quality and a pristine environment provide winemakers with ideal conditions to produce world-class wines.
Wines produced from Frankland River fruit are usually of very high quality, have lower alcohol content and are delicate, with intense varietal characters. The region is renowned for the consistency of wine quality. Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet are varieties of particular note.
Cranbrook and Frankland River are the two main townships in the Shire of Cranbrook which extends from traditional broad scale agriculture, wineries and vineyards, national parkland and rolling hills leading into the majestic Stirling Ranges. There are caravan parks situated in Cranbrook and Frankland River, farm stays, chalets and bed and breakfast establishments to provide a wide range of tourist accommodation. Cranbrook supports a wide range of sporting activities, from water sports available at lakes within the Shire, to the more usual tennis, bowls, cricket, golf, etc.
Frankland River is an increasing tourist destination with the river, local lakes and plentiful native bushlands providing varied wildlife and flora habitats including many species of orchids and fragrant boronias. The Frankland River Wine region provides even the most enthusiastic wine taster ample opportunity to test their palate on a large range of medal-winning reds and whites at a large number of wineries.
Wildflowers and RecreationThe total wildflower species number is almost 1000, of which 100 grow only in the Stirling Ranges. Wildflowers can be seen all year round but are at their best from August to November during which time the Stirling Range National Park is a kaleidoscope of colour. Many species of Banksia, Isopogen, Eucalypts, Smoke Bush, Darwinia (Bell Flowers) and of course, orchids will be flowering at this time.
